An Open Letter to the Supreme Court

Where are they really headed?

March 20, 2024

Dear Chief Justice Roberts:

Why do I, like many Americans, feel like your court is on the precipice of a major mistake? If you operated in vacuum far away from politics, we would all be more comfortable. But in the last few years, the court appears to be wearing blue and red ropes. Is there no transparency and honesty being promoted in your building?

Now there is another aspect of your role becoming more and more bothersome: Time. Some cases and disputes are fast-tracked, while others seem less important. People are voting NOW! I know that researching law and precedents takes time and skill. I assume you have more than enough skill in your branch of government.

Recently, it appeared that the final filter of right and wrong is succumbing to pressures of STATE’S RIGHTS. You might believe you can split the baby and make everyone happy. Chief Justice Roberts, you are not splitting the baby, you are charting the path of justice for America.

Dobbs has divided the country and was not good for America. The idea of taking power away from the Federal Government (Texas SB4) and giving more prerogative to a state governor trying to please some imaginary majority of far right or left is illusionary and destructive. You’ll see, and when they write the history, you will be a footnote on what can really happen when the minority voice on the court is disregarded. They represent me.

You don’t do any consumer research; you just tell us what the law says, right? At least that is what I thought, but when you issue a decision, or delay justice with your feet dragging, you hurt the people and chip away at what makes America special. And you must tell us the WHY behind each decision, because many no longer trust you.

If you grant a former president immunity from any law of the land, you will pave the way for that same faction, once in power again, to dissolve the Supreme Court. Maybe get rid of all the courts. Is that what you want?

As you know, on February 6, 2024, the D.C. Circuit unanimously ruled that a president doesn’t have immunity from prosecution. Your justices should have read that decision and agreed and justice could deliver the right to a speedy trial for all of us.

I sense you want to protect your turf and like a dog in the neighborhood and pollute the process by writing some large decision that might give a president too much power that we will all regret. I urge you, as the Chief Justice, to please bring respect back to the court.

I will appreciate your response.

Sincerely,

Dwight C. Douglas
