WHAT TO DO ABOUT PUTIN?

Every American must take a side

I didn’t vote for Ronald Reagan, but I was with him and backed his efforts to get the hostages out of Iran. It was the American thing to do. I hated Richard Nixon, but I agreed with his departure from Vietnam regardless of how ugly it was. When President Biden ordered the end of our Afghanistan occupation, I knew it was the right thing to do in the long run, even with an understanding the evil Taliban would take over.

Now we have Putin, a wannabe Hitler, with all the power of Dr. Evil and a full nuclear arsenal, you know, true “weapons of mass destruction.” Vladimir has decided to take Ukraine because of a wild notion that Ukraine has always been part of Russia. Ukraine was a place, a county and a people long before there was a Moscow, but Putin doesn’t care. This has less to do with history and more to do with what Putin wants written about him in the future.

Putin wants a war. He wants to prove that he’s the worst mo’fo’ in the world. Napoleon would be proud of this little man’s desire to appear big on the world stage, but with his bad knees and pigeon-toed walk he’s just another man who will die one day. Before he departs, however, he wants to make his country bigger by taking land and controlling people. He’s bored and falling into his own dogma of power and deceit. Just last week Putin said he would not invade Ukraine. Well, guess what? He lied.

We are seeing Hitler Version 2.0, and if the world doesn’t wake up this is going to be bad for human beings, bad for the world economy and particularly bad for the United States of America. So, when Donald Trump, a soiled man with a lack of moral judgement, talks about the brilliance of Vladimir Putin with his launch of World War III, Dwight Eisenhower, Harry Truman and Franklin Delano Roosevelt were turning in their graves, not wanting to watch a former President disgrace himself in front of the world.

But this isn’t going to help Trump, because now every Congressional Republican will have to choose to be either pro-American or anti-American. Any American siding with Putin is unpatriotic. It’s not about the “world order,” as these dictators state in their speeches, it’s about strong nations beating up smaller nations and somehow being convinced they cannot be held accountable. Hell, maybe Putin will next take Alaska back. I’m not kidding, Putin’s declaration that Ukraine was not really a country and was “historically” part of Russia could also be said about Alaska, with its rich minerals and fossils fuels they should be careful.

Alaska was Russian property until 1867 when the US purchased the land. So, honestly, what’s to stop Putin’s Navy from sailing across the Bering Strait to take our turf? At the risk of sounding like the US generals who sent our army into Vietnam to stop the spread of communism, I believe if Putin is not stopped, he will advance on every nation he can easily overtake to retool the world back to the way it existed when the USSR was a true power. We must stop him now.

First, we should throw Russia out of the United Nations. They do not deserve a vote because they don’t follow the rules and don’t use their vote to promote world peace and order, but simply to block Western ideas and ideals. Why should they be allowed to ignore the will of the body, break the rules and do whatever they want? If the United Nations doesn’t stop this unprovoked and unwarranted attack on another country, what comes next?

www.cnn.com

Next, NATO should immediately call a vote and accept Ukraine into the alliance with the full force of Article 51 which states, “The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defense.” Should Ukraine join NATO, all the nations in that organization must declare unity against Russia and its attempted overthrow of a sovereign nation.

And next, domestically, every sponsor of Fox News should pull their advertising until the owners of that channel declare their position on the subject of Russia invading Ukraine. Without their open acceptance of American values, why are they allowed to promote Russian aggression to millions of the citizens of this country? They take money from sponsors who are being hurt by this attack on a democracy. LOOK AT THE STOCK MARKET! Remember, when things get back, the first thing taken of the budget is advertising.

Finally, as much as Joe Biden doesn’t want to be the guy to do it, he must send troops into Ukraine, either through our NATO agreements, UN responsiveness or desire to protect the weapons and aid already in place there. The human life that will be lost if the world stands by and watches would be immoral.

Putin is almost seventy years old, and the Viagra of war must be turning him on. He wants to be seen as a tall, respected tyrant, but he’s just another Stalin, just another Hitler and just another Saddam Hussein with a bigger army. I hope we can unite against this malevolent man. I fear if we don’t, Russia and China will take over the world while we sit and wonder about Trump’s place in the next election. China will take over Taiwan causing another disruption of freedom and eradicate a reasonable democracy. Look what they did in Hong Kong.

As far as Donald Trump is concerned, he can go fuck himself and work on his little social media catastrophe. To my way of thinking, you are either pro-America and anti-Putin or you are a lousy scum sucking loser. Stronger viewpoints to come later.

TAX AND INSURANCE FRAUD

Time to face the music!

I don’t know about you, but I cannot trust anyone who doesn’t pay their taxes. Such behavior is downright unfair to the rest of us working stiffs. I also have no regard for those who commit insurance fraud and stuff their pockets with ill-gotten funds.

I knew he was lying the very first time Donald Trump said that he couldn’t release his tax returns because he was under an audit. He continued to spout that same falsehood every time he was asked about his tax returns. The allegation that he has two sets of books, one for the IRS and insurance companies and one for the banks, rings true to me. The man has always been out to deceive, cheat and lie his way to more money.

Anyone who knows anything about business and law was not surprised when this headline blasted across ABC News the other day, “Trump’s accounting firm resigns, saying his financial disclosures should ’no longer be relied upon.’” Well, that is tantamount to saying, “See, we knew his figures didn’t make sense, but hey, he was our client, and we have a right to assume our clients tell us the truth.” REALLY?

The Truth about Trump

That aside, let’s get back to Trump, the Trump Organization and the “family.” It’s clear to me after reading Mary L. Trump’s book, Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man, that Donald gets most of his anti-government, anti-tax and closet neo-Nazi beliefs from his father Fred. Not only did the elder Trump bilk the government out of funds to build his empire, he also taught young Donald to use every possible loophole, malpractice or mendacity to get over the rules, regulations and requirements governing each of his projects and business agreements. Why would we believe that Trump and his organization play fair when it came to taxes? Why wouldn’t the man and his kids use every conceivable dodge to protect their personal treasure?

Trump received a letter from Mazur’s, his accounting firm, clearly stating it’s Trump documents over the past ten years should not be relied upon and, “We have come to this conclusion based, in part, upon the filings made by the New York Attorney General on January 18, 2022, our own investigation, and information received from internal and external sources.” They are not saying they knowingly filed bad documents. Remember that even us lowlings must sign our income tax returns regardless of who filed them. Such a signature is a firm claim that all the data is correct. When you sign your name, you are not one hundred percent indemnifying the preparer, but you are certainly on the hook far more than the accountant.

A judge has now ruled that the New York Attorney General has the right to compel the testimony of Donald Trump, Don Junior and Princess Ivanka, but don’t expect them tell the truth. According to Bloomberg News, “Eric Trump Invoked the Fifth Amendment about five hundred times” during previous testimony. It’s likely the court will have to rely on the statements of others to get at the true workings of the Trump Organization.

Everyone running for the Presidency, for Congress and anyone considered for a lifelong post on the Supreme Court should be compelled to release the most recent ten years of their income tax filings. Citizens must be able to judge a person’s financial integrity before voting. A cheater needs to be exposed, a liar must be confronted, neither should get our votes.

It was disrespectful to America and its taxpayers when Trump’s lawyer argued in court that Donald has membership in a “protected class.” First of all, that legal term is mostly used to protect class members from employment discrimination. The US federal government provides protection from discrimination to people with the common characteristics of race, color, religion, national origin or ancestry, sex, age, physical or mental disability, veteran status, genetic information and citizenship. Class membership has absolutely nothing to do with a former president. The judge was correct in denying that reason for Trump not to testify about malfeasance in the Trump Organization. The failed defense was a total embarrassment.

A substantial percentage of Americans will not rest until Donald John Trump is held accountable for his lies, for his corruption, and, most decidedly, for the accelerant he poured on the mob that violently attacked Capitol Hill on January 6th, 2021 in an attempt to stop the peaceful transfer of presidential power. I believe we can add seditionist to Trump’s litany of labels because sedition is an overt, subversive act.

Even though many corrupt Senators didn’t convict him, I am certain that in a court of law, Trump would be sentenced to prison for a long time. Sorry, he’s not a god; he’s just a cult leader. No man or woman is above the law. Any defender who believes Trump and his family are members of a protected class need to study United States law, which is in disagreement with most of what Trump did before, during, and after his presidency.

WHAT I LEARNED FROM WHOOPI

Things are different than what you think

Several years ago, I watched Bill Maher’s talk/comedy show Real Time on HBO. One of Bill’s guests was Margaret Cho, an exceptionally talented comedian who has always pushed the envelope. This night the panelists were discussing America’s many wars, conflicts and global interventions. Margaret declared that President George W. Bush should be charged for war crimes because he used US military force under false pretenses to topple Saddam Hussein, which also killed innocent people. One of the other guests retorted, “You are a comedian. You don’t have the right to say that. You don’t know what you’re talking about.” Bill broke up the fight, but I was taken aback. Does one have to meet certain qualifications or carry a particular pedigree before commenting on a subject? With the power of social media these days, many unqualified people have platforms far more powerful than their intellect.

Another night, Maher used the “N word,” and some powerful African Americans appeared on his show the following week to explain why he can’t use that word, even in a joke. For Maher, being contrite was not only out of character, but outside his brand of libertarian free speech and being politically incorrect to make a point.

When basketball player LeBron James commented about politics a few years ago, Laura Ingraham was quick to call him out by saying, “Shut up and dribble.” I guess that conservative washrag believes professional athletes don’t have the same valuable citizen rights declared in the First Amendment. Now we’re hearing it about Whoopi Goldberg. One commentator on a cable “news” network actually said, “Whoopi was added to the show to do humor, not engage in serious conversations.”

By now, everyone knows what Whoopi said and there are some coming to her defense, but it’s an argument no one will win with those who are most deeply affected by Hitler and the Holocaust. This is a situation like what ABC went through years ago with Roseanne Barr, who failed to comprehend the hate in her social media comments. For Ms. Goldberg, it’s a suspension and, of course, a “learning” moment.  I have learned also.

Hitler and the Holocaust cannot be approached in a strictly historical or scholarly etymological way. Words, no matter how much we massage or defend them, must be understood in context of the emotional vibrations they impart. I’ll use the word, “uptight” as an example. When Stevie Wonder sang, “Everything is alright, uptight, out of sight,” we joyously sang along. Several years later, being “uptight” was no longer a good thing. And few would have commented on the irony of a blind man singing the words, “out of sight.”

Pop psychologists decided the word “uptight” meant to be filled with stress. There’s no way to go back to the older, original meaning. Words change and morph throughout history and as a meaning changes a different feeling can be elicited when the word is used. It would be a futile exercise to debate the derivation of the word, “race” and apply that to a defense of Whoopi Goldberg’s statement.

Here’s what I learned quite swiftly. Just like no white person can truly know what it’s like to be black, no non-Jewish person can accurately know the pain, the sorrow, and the struggle felt by those who saw the numbers tattooed on the arms of their loved ones. The Jewish community has a right to bristle when hearing an uncentered debate between TV talking heads about the Holocaust and Hitler’s demonic theories and actions. Those wielding opinions on such a powerful platform need to figure out which topics are outside their range of knowledge and simply not comment on them. I’m sure Whoopi is smart, but she’s not an expert with Jewish emotions or knowledge, but as we have seen many times before, anyone has the right to make a mistake, so long as they have the cognizance to own it.

I am the son of a soldier who was there right after those death camps in Europe were liberated, and even I can’t comprehend how that affects the families involved. I do know that my father was deeply depressed by what he saw and spent the rest of his life trying to find solace in his church and with his God. I don’t need to be told how I felt when I looked at the photographs in the History of WWII books that were in our home. This is why Emmett Till’s casket was open in the church, to make everyone know what happened.

Hitler was quick to declare who was part of the “Aryan race” and who was not. Had he kept his stupid theories to himself, we wouldn’t be talking about this and six million people would not have been murdered. Some might use the word, “died” in that sentence, but doing so would be wrong. Human beings were murdered. This is a perfect example of the challenge people face when communicating. They sometimes say stupid things or slightly change the meaning to win an argument only to lose a friend.

I approached a sensitive matter and learned a valuable lesson: don’t over-analyze, try to justify or allude to understanding another’s pain. Was slavery bad? Yes. Were African Americans killed? Yes, but I cannot use the knowledge of my race in a discussion about someone else’s race. Why should white board of education members get to tell Black people how it was? It’s never an exact fit when you force your viewpoints or try to pervert the truth. Doing so might make the other person feel you don’t care, or worse, that you don’t understand.

There was a time in Scottish history when the powers of Great Britain declared my descendants were an inferior “race,” and that allowed the English government to wield ridiculous power over people, who were the same as Brits, humans. Back in that day, there was a common law known as The Lord’s Right, also called jus primae noctis, which loosely translates to “the right of the first night.” This rule allowed feudal lords to have sexual relations with subordinate women on their wedding nights. They used the force of their army to take the women away from the village. Imagine if the governor of your state took your daughter on her wedding day. I certainly didn’t need to debate whether I was a “subordinate race” to feel anger and resentment toward any government that would allow such a barbaric practice. If you don’t want to take the time to read about it, just go watch the movies Brave Heart or Rob Roy.

The final lesson for today, but never forever, is we must always remember the horrendous things people do to people. It always starts when they declare you are an “other.” They can steal your name, they can steal your family, they can steal the very meaning of words for their own purposes, but it’s impossible to erase the blood stain by arguing about words. You must know the feeling, the pain and, of course, the reality of today. There are still Nazis in America. Those same evil people we thought we eliminated continue to live amongst us. Don’t waste time discussing words when the problem is still alive.
