IT’S WAR, STUPID!

The Truth about Afghanistan

Since the end of World War II, America has abused the privilege of waging war. You might think we’ve learned our lessons about nation building and getting drawn into wars, but we haven’t. Let’s disassemble the complexities and state some clear observations about what is now happening in Afghanistan.

When George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney first marched into Afghanistan, and then Iraq, it was all about revenge for 9-11. Yes, they wanted to get Osama bin Laden, but they also had a deep-seated desire to shake up the Middle East to force change. The war architects adjusted their justifications to human rights of the women and children in Afghanistan and the weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. One was real, the other was a colossally miscalculated scheme by power hungry politicians. Americans fell for it and many couldn’t wait to go in and kick some ass.

The Three Stooges

Historians mislabeled the Soviet-Afghan War of 1979-1989 as a guerrilla war, but it was actually a Soviet invasion which violated international law. The Soviet Army fought for almost a decade in the Afghan countryside, claiming that more than 26,000 of their forces were killed during their nine-year war. Official Afghan stats state that 18,000 Afghani soldiers were killed. Pakistan, which fought for Afghanistan, suffered almost 6,000 deaths. The forces of the Mujahideen (which Osama bin Laden was part of), believe that more than 90,000 guerrilla combatants were killed. So, you see, the country has always been protected by not only government troops but also armies of hard-core, independent forces. The Taliban is a remnant of that arrangement.

Here’s another point of fact. The Afghani people have no desire for continuous war, and what has transpired over the last 20 years has been a living hell for those who call the country home. You might need a good, stiff drink after digesting this research by Brown University. Since the occupation started, the Afghan security forces have lost more than 69,000 troops and more than 51,000 civilians and militants. More than 3,500 coalition soldiers have died since 2001, and about two-thirds of them were Americans. More than 20,000 US soldiers have been injured, and some of them will carry physical and mental scars for the rest of their lives. If you are shaking your head, stop. It’s WAR, Stupid!

Sure, America lost fewer men and women than Russia, but Afghanistan is truly a big black hole where vindicative, egotistical military “experts” tell the leaders what they want to hear and march forward with mission creep and twenty-year conflicts. The same thing happened in Vietnam. When the mothers and fathers whose sons and daughters were killed in the conflict see us pulling out “early,” they have to face the grim truth that more US kids being killed won’t bring back their loved ones.

Were the soldiers’ efforts valid? Yes, but war doesn’t care about who dies; it matters only to those who must endure the pain forever. I don’t want to hear that we must continue to fight because your kid was killed. I don’t want to hear any blame about the chaos and disorder of the pull-out. I don’t need to hear the former President’s claim that if Joe Biden had followed his plan everything would have gone smoothly. Mr. Trump, claiming that the Taliban “likes” you is not a metal of honor. It’s the curse of your bad deal, which you now deny.

We must take a sober look at some facts. First, Osama bin Laden was found and terminated in Pakistan. Did we march into that country and try to change the regime because they “didn’t know” he was there? Did all of our bombs and killing really make those radical jihadists respect us? We never defeated ISIS; we just took the land they were occupying. We never eradicated the Taliban, and now we are hearing that even Al Qaeda has reconstituted and is waiting for the next battle over the Middle East. We spent a trillion dollars to do… what? We just delayed the inevitable.

One might argue that we should have divided Afghanistan into two and given the northern provinces to the Taliban. Really? After we pulled out of the southern part they would have attacked just as they did when we announced our departure. One pundit said, quite accurately, the Taliban has been waiting twenty years for this moment. We never defeated them, they just waited until we got bored.

We cannot fly everyone out of Afghanistan. Yes, we should protect the thousands of US citizens who work in the country, and we have a moral obligation to rescue those who worked with us during the occupation, but we cannot prevent death. We taught the 38 million people of the country the feeling of freedom, but they will lose that in a few months. We must not believe the press agents of the Taliban. They will slowly shift back to strict Islamic rule and freedoms will be lost. They already extract millions of dollars from their people at gunpoint. What would make them stop that practice?

A newsflash came across while I was writing this post. The Taliban say they won’t allow Afghans to leave the country and they reject an evacuation extension. The blockade of the airport in Kabul means they will have to secure their borders to stop the exodus from their rule. They will wait until September 1st, then bring the hammer down. It’s their country now.

Sorry, dear reader, I don’t share the media’s accelerated enthusiasm for the blame game and bewilderment about how bad it all is. It’s war, Stupid. Wars are designed to kill people. Killing is the way a war is won, and the victors get to tell their citizens how they are going to live. Yes, the right-wing media and their lunatic followers will complain about all the landed immigrants Joe Biden is bringing into America, but surely those given the gift of freedom will be extremely grateful and will work hard to make their lives better. As for the left-wing zealots, I’m sure they’ll clamor to redeploy hundreds of thousands of forces to keep Afghanistan free. What, 20 more years?

People die when the loser leaves a war. In 1995, Vietnam officially estimated that 2,000,000 civilians on both sides (North and South) perished, and some 1,100,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong fighters were killed during the Vietnam War. The US military has estimated that between 200,000 and 250,000 South Vietnamese soldiers died. You want to wear that metal on your chest?

Just consider, the Korean conflict was never even called a war and the result was terrible for all the North Korean people. We left Vietnam for the communists, and now we buy our t-shirts from them. We never completed the first Gulf War, which lead to the false claim of weapons of mass destruction. Did we win that war? Not really. Realize that Afghanistan is the same. I’m not trying to be a smart ass, but why do we keep starting wars we cannot win? It’s not anti-American to be smart.

THE “ANTI” AMERICAN

The Divide Between Aware and Unaware

I just came back from a tour of four western states. Yes, it was a vacation, but driving over 900 miles opened my eyes to some things about this country. Besides the native Americans living in abject poverty on valueless deserts and plains, we saw the rich ski lodges of the Rocky Mountains and the challenge of military families forced to live in underserved small towns. We have a lot to cheer about in this country, including the purple mountain majesty and a thing called democracy. I saw the bumper stickers reminding me that “freedom is not free,” and wondered what that actually means. Democracy gives us a say but freedom doesn’t mean we can do any damn thing we want. We have a responsibility to not intrude on the freedom of others.

I read the “My body my choice” signs held high at the anti-mask rallies by the same women who will be screaming against liberal women holding the same sign at Pro Choice rallies. The Covid-19 global pandemic has taught a lot, and now we know that Covid-19 can kill children. If Johnny doesn’t wear a mask it places Suzy at risk. Sean Penn, the actor and pro second amendment guy, says not wearing a mask is the same as pointing a gun at another. Covid-19 has the potential to hurt, sicken or kill our students and we must deal with this reality.

I am starting to think that the division in America is not political but a chasm between “aware” and “unaware” people. It’s all too easy to put a person down without understanding their personal knowledge base. Consider this. I hold a hammer and ask the person standing next to me to put their hands on the table. They quickly pull back, thinking I want to hit their hands with the hammer and knowing how badly that would hurt. Over our lifetimes, we have gained knowledge of hammers and hot stoves and we automatically avoid them. Those people screaming “enough is enough” at school board meetings claiming that little Bobby shouldn’t have to wear a mask are asking for the hammer to come down on their hands. They are unaware of what Covid-19 can do because they haven’t taken the time to understand it.

While the Sarasota school board here in Florida was debating mandatory mask requirements for students, Governor Ron DeSantis signed a law forbidding mask mandates in public places, schools and businesses. The rich irony of those who carry signs that say “We Don’t Co-Parent with the Government” is they don’t realize that the government is telling them what they CANNOT DO. It’s the exact same kind of powerful government overreach they are protesting. Why are these folks helping the government be more powerful and overbearing in their lives? Do they derive pleasure from the pain of the hammer?

The early figures from our school district here on the west coast of Florida are disturbing. In the first week of class, 166 staff members and 683 students tested positive for Covid-19. 69 staff members and 1,421 students were required to quarantine after contact with an infected person. Governor DeSantis forced the Florida Department of Health to slow the release of coronavirus data. What was he thinking? Oh, yeah, he wasn’t thinking. He even admitted during a press conference a week ago that a once- weekly release of Covid statistics was not in the public interest. I guess he did it to underscore his authority.

We’ve had a long history of the term “anti-American” activities. Donald Trump was quick to use the trope against anyone who disagreed with him or his policies. Any chance that the Donald could be a good president was dashed by his inability to see beyond his beliefs. He has a strange isolationist strategy. If you like him, he likes you and he gives, but if you are not a hundred percent with him then you are his enemy. Baby-Trump DeSantis has threatened to cut off education funding and the salaries of those who teach our children if they vote in mask mandates for their schools and students. He’s being anti-American by saying the state government should control local governments and school boards. Ron DeSantis is a vindictive son-of-a-bitch.

I heard lots of complainers on my trip. The conversations were anti-this or anti-that. Biden messed up Afghanistan, I don’t want my kids to wear a mask. One father demanded his kids be home schooled because the elementary school had a mask mandate. Another guy whined about bad roads and, in the same paragraph, said he was against the infrastructure bill because Biden was robbing the people. Being against something seems to be more popular than taking the time to be aware, to investigate and understand what is really going on. It’s so much more fun to be against something. Americans became more “anti” over the last four years because they were taught that being a complainer, a putdown artist and an outrageous personality wasn’t a disorder; it was a valuable attribute. Yes, it’s Donald Trump’s fault. Sorry to complain.

Motoring over stretches of barren land last week, it dawned on me that we Americans waste so much time on insipid conversations, unimportant social media rants, likes and dislikes that we no longer have awareness of what we are doing and what is happening all around us. We are melting our planet with emissions, burning our forests with raging fires, and creating strange weather pattens that will wash away our homelands. Did we want another whack of the hammer so badly that we elected a climate change denier?

We stood down and took foolish advice from a craven lunatic instead of fighting the pandemic. We should have shut things down and started wearing masks at the very beginning. Sadly, we had no one to lead us, no one to cheerlead us to victory. We simply had an unaware anti-American in the White House.

And those deeply loyal Republicans in power, who cling to a fantasy that things were oh so good with President 45, are just as much part of the problem. They, too, are anti-American. When Rand Paul claims that masks do nothing, I wonder what he would say if a doctor about to operate on him refused to scrub up and wear a mask. About 20% of us are anti-science, anti-mask and anti-vaccine. “I don’t trust anything from the government” may be an interesting bumper sticker, but we will tread on you if you stand in the way of our kids’ safety and health. You can be a drunken driver in your backyard, but as soon as you take your vehicle to the road you are on GOVERNMENT LAND. Follow the rules.

CUOMO IS A BIG FAT LIAR

The Curse of Always Being Right

Some men are driven hard by two different heads. One is logical and kind while the other will do anything he can to get what he wants.

I’m sure you know that the Attorney General of the State of New York, Letitia James, held a press conference to announce that her investigation of Governor Andrew Cuomo is now complete. The findings are serious, saying that the governor sexually harassed at least eleven women and also retaliated against a former employee who complained publicly about his conduct. So, no arrest? When a state’s attorney general holds a press conference to announce that someone committed a crime, they often give a lowdown on an arrest. What gives?

Letitia James

Within minutes of the press conference, Governor Cuomo released a recorded response to the report. Framed by a soft lens, muted lighting and wearing no expression, Cuomo declared, “I never touched anyone inappropriately.” So, now the party begins. Here’s another man who denies the accounts of more than a hundred witnesses, including a New York State cop, and claims he has just been misinterpreted. Cuomo must not be a very good lawyer, because the explanation of his interaction with one accuser gives the prosecution an example of his use of power to further harass an accuser.

There’s an interesting pecking order in this country. We elect hometown do-gooders to be our mayors and county commissioners. They establish themselves, and sometimes go on to serve in state senates and assemblies. Then, if bitten hard by the power bug, they advance to running for governor. As you know, there is no testing or formal qualifications for that job. We have had cases where a convicted criminal still serving jail time has been elected to public office. I have no idea why there isn’t a law against that.

In old-school street talk, Andrew Cuomo is “lucky sperm” or a “made-man,” the offspring of a famous leader getting weaned on politics and power from the very beginning of his life. Mario Cuomo, Andrew’s very famous and powerful father, served as New York’s Governor for twelve years, which gave his son an opportunity to jump into New York and Democratic politics with both feet. Andrew, who is one of five siblings and the firstborn male, was destined to become New York’s Governor from birth, and now he’s there and in hot water. Today’s big topic is whether Andrew Cuomo will resign after the release of some very damaging information. But before we get to that question, let me tell you a story.

For a while in the early 2000s, I dabbled with Democratic politics in the small town of White Plains, New York. Because of my background in marketing, some of the candidates asked for my help with their video ads, positioning statements and political strategies. While working with one candidate for mayor, I realized some contenders didn’t have the intellectual depth to grasp the power of my recommendations. I became disillusioned with local politics and eventually worked only with those whom I thoroughly vetted. I didn’t consult Adam Bradley, who campaigned to become the Mayor of White Plains and won the election. I was never much impressed with him, but the people spoke and he became the first Democratic mayor in decades.

One evening shortly after he took office, I looked out the window of my sixth-floor apartment and saw the glaring lights of half a dozen TV satellite trucks on my street. I turned on the news, and there was the same scene I was watching out my window. The Fox newscaster had a glimmer in her eye as she announced that the Democratic Mayor of White Plains was charged in City Court with assault in the 3rd degree, a class A misdemeanor. Adam Bradley’s wife, Fumiko, filed a domestic violence complaint against her husband, alleging that he grabbed her left arm, placed it on a door frame and slammed the door on her hand. Bradley acknowledged that he and his wife had problems but denied that he assaulted her.

Soon after, the local Democratic Party held a giant “come-to-Jesus” meeting, where the mayor presented his argument for staying in office. It was embarrassing, with the mayor proclaiming that he would not resign unless he was told to do so by the governor. So, Governor Andrew Cuomo called the embattled mayor and said, “It’s time.” The disgraced mayor then resigned and another council person was put in his place.

Andrew Cuomo

You see, there is always a higher power. When asked the other day, President Joe Biden said New York Governor Andrew Cuomo should resign. It’s the same kind of judgement Cuomo faced years ago in the White Plains matter, and he made that decision before any legal findings in the former mayor’s battery case. There are times we shouldn’t wait for a judge or jury to decide. The people don’t need liars in office. Haven’t we learned that lesson over the last four years?

There is an important footnote in the Mayor Adam Bradley case. In 2013, a six-person jury found Adam Bradley not guilty of all his criminal charges, three counts of harassment, one of attempted assault and one of criminal contempt. He probably wouldn’t have done a good job being mayor while having to spend hours of his time defending himself, but that doesn’t mean a snap to judgement is always right.

Andrew Cuomo’s lying about these eleven women and using his power to discharge their accusations indicates his ego is more important to him than doing what’s right for his state. The donut ladies at the PTA didn’t handle the investigation, it was conducted by the Attorney General and lawyers from his own administration. If Andrew Cuomo doesn’t believe them, then who does he believe?

THE QUICK & THE DEAD

Can you escape your sins?

I have been watching the CNN Original Series “Jerusalem: City of Faith and Fury” and I must say it has shown me the self-righteousness and political fallacy of the Holy Land. Come to think of it, all the major religions are grounded in the writings of a small group of people who lived within 500 miles of each other three-thousand years ago. It’s as if nothing was happening anywhere else in the world that mattered to God.

Clearly, it was a long voyage from a polytheistic to a monotheistic belief system, but how did the early Jews, Christians and Muslims determine that the Egyptians were wrong? It’s too simplistic to say that God told them so. I attempt to follow the logic but here’s what confuses me. Why would one religion, Judaism, teach that a messiah was coming but when he finally arrived, they disowned him? Mohammad’s relationship with God is like that between Jesus and God, but Islamic elders say there is no savior walking in today’s world and they treat the prophet’s words as the word of God, but alas, have been fighting for more than four hundred years on which wing of the religion is the rightful heir to power.

The political hogwash in the scriptures is disturbing. Some of what appears in both the Old and New Testaments seems more like the thoughts of insecure men rather than the timeless guidance we would like it to be. For example, scripture warns that those who sin, both the quick and the dead, will be judged by Jesus Christ. In other words, it implies that God will act on the sins of a person regardless of whether they are alive (quick) or have passed into the afterlife (dead). So, dying doesn’t erase what a man or woman has done in this life? Boy, I sure am glad I’m not Donald Trump!

Black Jesus

As I watch more than 600,000 of my fellow citizens die because of a vicious virus, I can’t help wondering why perfectly good people have been taken from their families and loved ones. Have their earthly sins been so great that they had to suffer a terrible death in a hospital bed, alone?

The uniformed and disbelievers ignore science, and their actions and inactions are causing more death and destruction. Many Americans cannot discern the difference between a myth and a well-researched fact. Millions of people today gravitate toward the worship of idols, as did the Israelites when Moses was on the mountain receiving the Ten Commandments. Aaron built a golden calf and those waiting for Moses sought comfort in that shiny metal idol.

Similar to past plagues, many today cannot understand how minor things can be totally disastrous. Like flies on the bellies of rats who stow away on ships bringing goods from faraway places, many people are just along for the ride. Early Americans had no understanding that the pus from a body infected with smallpox could inoculate them from the disease. Their self-righteousness led them to ignore the tribal methods of Africans which then forced smallpox on the world. As man “conquered” the world, viruses and germs continued to kill millions of people. What good is a world that ain’t worth keeping?

I had a thought when waking up this morning, Is God allowing millions of people to die who will also be judged in the next life? Yes, the “quick” die hard, but the dead are dead. Why would a supposedly merciful God, who so loves the world that he gave us his only son, go around taking people away from those they love? The stupidity is not just a current infection.

Do you believe that we killed God’s only son because of the same politics that keep the Middle East from being a peaceful place on this earth? Jesus was a true prophet who spread a unique anti-temple sentiment while pitching the concept of a direct, personal connection to God.  Why, then, are we going through high priests, saviors, prophets and politicians to talk to him? Oh, one more question; how do we know God is a man?

I truly believe that if Jesus Christ or Mohammed were to return to the world today and urge everyone to get a vaccine, the deceivers would say they are democratic operatives. You can save the fire and brimstone. The uninformed still smoke cigarettes and send their money to Donald Trump, so why would they believe Jesus? They don’t even grasp the golden rule. They believe that a certain political religion controls the media and all the banks, so why would they move a muscle for a real savoir? They truly envision their leader coming down from the mountain on August 13 of this year to retake the crown and smite his enemies.

The Economist

In this case, the quick are the dead. They are walking corpses who cannot understand they are the virus out to destroy the only “God-endorsed country,” the United States of America. They think Jesus was a white man who spoke English. Some of the unwashed even believe that Jesus walked around America. It’s true, just ask Mitt Romney. But it’s not about any one person, it’s about what or who we choose to trust. If we truly Trust in God, then why aren’t we listening?

Moses gave us only ten rules, and the first one is about God and the rest about me, me and me. It’s an egotistical, era bound list that doesn’t stand up to the test of time. One would think God should have been able to see the future so perfectly he would construct a set of rules that could be applied to any age. What, did he mail it in?

I get it, I shouldn’t covet my neighbor’s wife or house, and I guess we all have oxen out back. Why are the commandments written to men but not all genders? Is it okay for a woman to covet her neighbor’s husband? The biggies —Thou shall not murder, Thou shall not commit adultery, Thou shall not steal, Thou shall not bear false witness against thy neighbor — all make sense. However, I would have preferred Mo and God directly saying, “Thou shall not lie.” If I am going to be judged by God as being “quick” or “dead” I would like to know the rules.

The list doesn’t include, “Thou shall not avoid getting vaccinated in order to help my neighbor stay alive.” We also don’t see, “Thou shall not mock the mask to make the virus worse.” Okay, I know God couldn’t think of everything and the tablets of stone were only so big.

Why doesn’t God just send an email to all of us stating clearly what we should do? Or maybe God should have a TikTok channel so he can dance and rap and tell us all to take care of our fellow men and women. Sure, I am being silly, but really, just when we need an all-powerful deity, where are they?

YOU HAVE A CHEATING WIFE

And it’s all because of you

I just thought of a great analogy for all this election fraud B.S. Let’s start with someone who is usually a rather reasonable person, Oklahoma Senator James Lankford. He is facing a rebellion within his party back home because he refused to cast a vote objecting to the Electoral College results in Pennsylvania and Arizona following the riot at the US Capitol. Wow, he’s not going with the “big lie” and is now being tarred and feathered in Oklahoma. Perhaps a scalping would be more in tune with the state’s history.

James Lankford

Mr. Lankford said, “Election integrity is monumental. We have to have confidence, whether we win or whether we lose — we win some battles, we will lose some battles, that’s how politics goes — but you have to have confidence that the election was fair, and the election was legal.” So, he voted in Congress to certify the Electoral College votes. That means, to the best of his knowledge, he feels the election in 2020 was fair and legal. Certainly, he wouldn’t certify the vote if he knew there was a problem.

Let me lay out an analogy/story and you follow along, okay? Imagine a husband who is very insecure, and he has a smokin’ hot wife. Let’s call her Lolita. Hey, just happens to be her name. The husband wakes every day with a little pestering feeling that sooner or later Lolita is going leave him for another man. He has a giant conflict between wanting to control everything yet feeling inferior.

He keeps questioning his wife about her fidelity and keeps poking into her activities, “Where were you for an hour today?” or “Hey, your new trainer at the club, what does he look like?” He endlessly asks and asks and eventually hires a firm named Cyber Ninjas to keep an eye on her. Every week they give him a printout of his wife’s movements, printed on bamboo infused paper, so he knows everything she does and every place she goes.

He makes such a big deal about things that Lolita starts to feel uncomfortable. She talks to her shrink and her doctor tells her to ignore his insecurities, but then she starts to think, “Gee, maybe I should have an affair.” She daydreams about who she might seduce. You know, soap opera stuff.

One day, she’s driving in her car when a song comes on the radio and the lyrics strike a note within her, “People are talkin’, talkin’ ’bout people, I hear them whisper, you won’t believe it, They think we’re lovers kept under covers. I just ignore it, but they keep saying. Let’s give them something to talk about!” That Bonnie Raitt song is really good!

Because of some peoples’ incessant talk about a suspicious election, others are starting to believe they are RIGGED. Both stories are sad. Hot smokin’ wife Lolita ends up, predictably leaving her insecure, paranoid husband after she began seeing someone else.

Brad Raffensperger, Georgia

Similarly, lots of Republicans didn’t vote in the GEORGIA runoff election last January because they were convinced the election was having an affair with corruption. After the Republicans lost, the state government began constructing many new laws to get rid of procedures that made it easier to vote during the global pandemic. Simply stated, when it’s easier to vote, more people vote.

When lots of people vote the margins change, resulting in a stronger mandate to govern. It would be as if all the all the men enacted laws that would prohibit “their women” from leaving the house and if they do, they must wear a cover over their head. Yeah, that will stop this alleged infidelity.

If you shared vowels with a Republican legislator, he or she may have promised to do your bidding and be faithful to you. Once they are elected and sworn in, however, they pledge to uphold the constitutions of the US and the state they serve. They are supposed to take care of all their citizens, not just the ones who voted them into office. I am sure many people in northwest Georgia regret their vote for Marjorie Taylor Greene. They want a divorce from this foolish pairing as soon as possible. She not only cheating on them, she’s doing so with another woman, Representative Lauren Boebert.

Okay, I’ll get serious now. All these new, restrictive voting laws, policies and bills have been analyzed by people who understand American elections, and they have one consistent appraisal of the whole mess — lines at polling places on election day will be longer. In short, it will take more time to vote. In essence, these new laws are making it harder for people to vote.

In southern states where November temperatures are soaring, and in northern states where they could be freezing, it makes no sense to force people into long voting lines. With our advanced technologies and great minds, why would we even consider making it more difficult to vote? I have no desire to remain married to any of these lowlife politicians who, based on a theory of how they can win, make the lives of us common citizens difficult. Have they not even considered using large sports facilities as polling locations so voters could be safe and comfortable?

What is wrong about voting by mail? Many states have done so successfully for years. What is wrong with neighborhood ballot drop boxes? What is wrong with any effort to make it easier to vote, including making every federal election day a holiday? If you give people a day off from work, they just might feel they owe it to someone to vote. It’s not a bribe, it’s common sense.

I say to the Republicans that lots of people will cheat on you, not because of any stupid conspiracy theory but because you sorely misread America. The basic foundation of the United States is giving every citizen a say in the way our government works. You can’t keep Black people, Hispanics or older citizens from voting. No matter how suspicious you are of them, they want to trust their leadership. That lesson came home painfully hard during the pandemic. Some trusted your opinions and they died. Their survivors will never forget your distractions and denials about what was happening. You are not worthy of this marriage. It’s time to pack your things and leave.
