CONGRESSIONAL LA CAGE AUX FOLLES

Marjorie Taylor Greene & Ilhan Omar

I have remarked many times that people say stupid things, including myself. It’s true. I’ve been known to make some really off the wall declarations that I now truly regret. Today, however, we’ll focus on how difficult it is to remain in the center and not overreact to insipid comments made by people who get paid $174,000 every year to represent us in Congress.

I have difficulty believing or even listening to things that both Marjorie Taylor Greene and Ilhan Omar say each time they open their pie holes. In the past, I committed to digital print all the outrageous and dangerous utterances of Taylor Greene, the junior representative of the 14th district of Georgia. Ms. Omar serves the Minnesota’s 5th congressional district and has been in office since 2019. She presents herself as a member of the Democratic – Farmer – Labor party (DFL) of her state. Let’s see why these districts voted for these two new members of Congress.

Ms. Greene won her district by 74.6% and Ms. Omar won hers by 63.4% when elected for her second term in Congress. These representatives are extremely popular in their districts, both of which are as polarized as the candidates they’ve elected.

Omar’s district in Minnesota turned Democratic in the early 1960s and has never changed. Its main political party is the DFL, outside the traditional two-party concept we see in most of America. The ethnic makeup of the 5th is 63% White, 17% Black, 9% Hispanic, 6% Asian, 4% Native American. In Minnesota’s 5th, 14% were born elsewhere — 26% were born in Asia and 34% Africa. So, Representative Ilham Omar is of Islamic faith, like her constituency. Even though non-citizens cannot vote, their influence in her community is great.

Taylor Greene’s 14th district of Georgia has a foreign-born population of only 6.83% and 95.4% of that part of the state are American citizens. Whites make up 65.4% of the district, Hispanics 16.1% and African Americans 10.5%. The area is 56.58% blue-collar and 43.42% white-collar. One statistic best illustrates the loyalty of Georgians in the 14th district; 79% of their 2020 votes went to Donald Trump.

Yesterday, more than a dozen House Democrats publicly criticized Ilhan Omar accusing her of giving “cover” to terrorists and suggesting her remarks about Hamas and the Taliban reflect a “deep-seated prejudice.” Omar equated the United States and Israel to Hamas and the Taliban in a tweet about “atrocities” she claims all four have committed. Okay, where do we start here? First, we truly need a new rule. Congresspeople should be allowed to use Twitter or Facebook only to post press releases from their offices. That way, each post would be an official document rather than an off-the-cuff comment. It will prevent wrong messages being sent because staff members would have to review each post for clarity and correctness. Why are we, the taxpayers, footing the bill for these staffs who aren’t doing their jobs?

In my opinion, neither of these women are adept at the English language. Think of Sarah Palin. She believed many of her statements made major contributions to the spoken word and culture of America, but careful examination of her words reveal they’re all bullshit. I don’t care about their party affiliations, both Greene and Omar are an embarrassment to America, and they shouldn’t be in Congress.

Why should Ms. Omar or Ms. Greene get to determine anything about basic American freedoms? They are narrowminded people interested only in minority viewpoints rather than all the people in their districts, let alone the whole country. I know each has only one vote, but when their public pronouncements produce violence against minorities or other citizens, we have an obligation to stop their shouts of “Fire! Fire!” in a theater with no flames.

Marjorie, the election wasn’t stolen. There are no Jewish space lasers causing fires in California and most of that other chicken shit you scrape off yours shoes and slap on Twitter are lies. Ilhan, nothing good happens when you rachet up distrust and attack the Jews. Funny how the two people we are talking about today have this thing about Jewish people. Don’t you think it all comes off a bit, may I say it, Anti-Semitic?

These two women engage their mouths before their brains. Yes, they talk the talk and walk the walk for their homies, but many of the rest of us wish they would just eat a heaping plate of SHUT THE FUCK UP.

There, I’ve said it. They don’t need to be canceled, they just need to slow down and ask the question, “Is what I am about to post true, and will it be helpful for all of America?” The “Oh, I was just being sarcastic” excuse that Trump constantly used doesn’t cut it. He’s gone and it’s time for a return to truth, or at least stop making up things that distract from the important tasks at hand. Omar and Greene do not have effective communication skills. Neither has done anything to prove they are worthy of the chairs they sit in. Time to find better people.

THE FARCE OF ELECTION FRAUD

State Republicans are Don Quixotes in Drag

One of my friends and fellow writers suggested that we need a simple Congressional resolution that states, “Joe Biden was legitimately elected President; there was no steal.” Bruce Ledewitz is right. It’s a brilliant idea because Congresspeople would then have to go on record to state their belief and some would disclose their faithless dogma. Yes, that’s oxymoronic but it’s exactly what Congress has become.

Bruce also suggested, “As for questions concerning the killing of protestor Ashli Babbitt by the Capitol police, Americans now realize how important it is to investigate all uses of lethal force by the police.” Yeah, with all this Black Lives Matter stuff going on it makes sense to figure out why a US Air Force veteran was shot, but hey, wasn’t that already investigated? According to reports in the Washington Post, “Authorities determined that there was insufficient evidence to prove Babbitt’s civil rights were violated, and that it was reasonable for the officer to believe he was firing in self-defense or in defense of members of Congress and aides who were fleeing the House chamber. Prosecutors did not identify the officer.”

Those Republicans who voted against a 9-11 style commission to investigate an insurrection now refuse to look into this attack on democracy, I guess we don’t need to know why Capitol Police used deadly force that day, but shouldn’t we learn everything that happened? Why weren’t more protesters who were breaching the wall of Congress shot to death? Sorry, I’m just asking. Why didn’t the police defend the Capitol Building?

Recently, I was at a dinner with some power Democrats in Sarasota, Florida and suggested that the state Dems ask for an audit of Florida claiming widespread fraud helped Trump win the state. One of the lawyers at the dinner said that was a great idea. Why no audit in FLORIDA? Because fraud only happens where you lose. Not a single state that Trump won has been challenged.

My friend Bruce continued, “Democrats have a hard time understanding that many of the demonstrators on January 6 were sincere in their belief that the Presidential election had been stolen. Democrats like to think the demonstrators were just a white nationalist mob,” but I protested. A group can be “sincere” in their beliefs and still be a “nationalist mob.”

We all know there would not have been a riot without star speaker Donald Trump, and there wouldn’t have been an insurrection without his urgent words. Had he simply said STAY HERE, they wouldn’t have gone to the Hill. We know that, but why isn’t something being done about what happened? Republican Kool-Aid drinking sycophants keep saying more than 500 people have been arrested and that’s all the investigation we need, but wait, who incited the riot? Why not arrest TRUMP? From the beginning I’ve said the DOJ can’t read the same laws we do and arrive at the same conclusion.

Many Republicans have an opinion that mail-in ballots are a demonic scheme to favor the Democrats over them. They claim mail-in ballots provide a “partisan advantage.”

2020 Florida Mail-In Ballot Stats

Does the research show that MAIL-IN BALLOTS favor Democrats over Republicans? Here in FLORIDA, we had 4.3M mail-in ballots, 31.1% for the GOP. We have a million voters with no party affiliation and many of them voted for TRUMP. That’s how he won.

I worked in radio research for years and can testify that by forcing a procedural, methodological or sample change does not always cause a skewing of results. Sometimes the opposite results occur. Would there be decreased Republican turnout if we made it harder for older people to vote? I am not sure the claim of “partisan advantage” should ever be written without quotes.

We don’t know if eliminating mail-in voting would give one party an advantage over the other. There are many places where mail-in voting is used exclusively, and Republicans consistently win there. Those goofy political zealots who believe mail-in ballots somehow affect voting results do so only because TRUMP SAID IT. In fact, Trump was just parroting someone who told him, “If you don’t do something about mail in voting, Republicans will never win again.” Donald John Trump believes he won the election, and if he doesn’t then he’s evil beyond comprehension.

To understand the truth behind all of this, just think of the teenager who said, “I’m not going to wear a mask, the president doesn’t.” That kid doesn’t know anything about elections, viruses or medicine; he knows only what he’s been told. Similarly, many state legislators who are concocting voodoo voting laws don’t understand how elections work. Their only “truth” is the shepherd of lies would never lead them to the slaughterhouse. Do they not fear the shearer’s blade? Do they not know mutton? Sooner or later, someone is going to ask them why they made it more difficult to vote and they will answer, “That’s not true.” At that moment, the debate will simply end. Lord Acton was right, absolute corruption is powerful stuff and absolutely they will eventually have their day in court. We can only hope the judges will see the wolf in a sheep’s cloak.

RAPIST, DEFAMER & LIAR

What is the Department of Justice Doing?

Often, I read the details of a legal case and completely understand it. It’s rare that I hear something like I’m about to share with you and have difficulty finding well-defined logic or reason for what’s in play. I’ll start with this reporting from CNN, “The Justice Department argued in a brief filed Monday that it should be permitted to substitute itself for former President Donald Trump as defendant in a defamation lawsuit brought by a longtime magazine columnist, E. Jean Carroll, who accused Trump of rape.”

E. Jean Carroll

Well, the statues of limitations might prohibit Ms. Carroll from bringing that serious allegation of sexual assault to court, but Mr. Trump’s comments while he was president included statements that questioned her credibility in terms that were, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ), “crude and disrespectful.” The DOJ continued, “But this case does not concern whether Mr. Trump’s response was appropriate. Nor does it turn on the truthfulness of Ms. Carroll’s allegations.” Okay, so this writer must now ask, “Just what is this case about?”

The DOJ takes the position that Trump was an employee of the government and that he acted “within the scope of employment,” and that he shouldn’t personally be the defendant in the case. WTF? The government didn’t attack the woman’s credibility, Donald John Trump did. This is another gesture that makes it seem the Chief Executive of America is above the law.

We cannot know what happened in the dressing room where Carroll claims Trump sexually assaulted her, but we do know that Trump’s reaction was highly vindictive and crude. It’s important to point out that in October 2020, a district judge rejected the Justice Department’s attempt to replace Trump in the lawsuit. Had the department been allowed to intervene in the case, it likely would have l been dismissed, because the government cannot be sued for defamation. So, here’s the legal fork in the road. Is the President of the United States an individual or the government itself?

What is missing here is comprehension that a president’s words could plunge a product, kill a company or destroy a person’s reputation and their ability to get work. This DOJ announcement claims a president cannot be sued. Why? Had Trump’s comments been made when he wasn’t in office, the DOJ would have no grounds to get involved. That proves that the flimsy argument they are making is wrong and should not get this case dismissed.

Their words “within the scope of employment,” imply that the statement of any government employee that hurts a person or company is protected speech. That’s incorrect. Most government employees are restricted by rules and policies regarding their public statements and if they mess up, they get fired. Such claims are investigated by the Inspector General’s office.

We have clear evidence that Donald Trump is a prolific liar. The Washington Post claims he lied 50,000 times while he was president. We also know our ex-president likes to defame people; he’s been doing that all his life. As for rape, well until someone brings a better case with evidence and witnesses, we will never know. All that aside, Donald is getting a huge gift from the DOJ and many Democrats and those on the far left will be asking the same question. WHY?

Letitia James – Attorney General of New York

I have a theory and it’s not good for the former President. I suspect that the Justice Department knows what is coming from the Southern District of New York, the Attorney General of New York and from the IRS, so maybe they are taking this possible precedent setting action because they know the shit will soon hit the fan. Speculating a bit further, what would keep a person, without merit or proof, from bringing the same kind of suit against President Joe Biden? Could it be that the DOJ is protecting the office of the president and not one, specific man?

Justice moves slowly in America and only time will tell, but I guarantee that if the judge accepts the DOJ reasoning the case will be dismissed and, once again, Trump will get off Scott free. How can this continue to happen, or are other clocks ticking down to some other major problems for the former president? Sadly, this drama will never end until Trump is gone and muzzled. Yes, the Donald needs to be canceled.

HIGH TECH RUNS ROUGHSHOD

Better to ask for forgiveness than permission

Have you heard about this? Amazon Sidewalk is a technology that creates a low-bandwidth network with the help of Sidewalk bridge devices, including select Echo and Ring devices. These bridge devices broadcast a small portion of your internet bandwidth to provide connectivity to you and your neighbors.

What? Okay, let’s get geeky here for a moment: According to Amazon, Sidewalk will use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) in the 900 MHz spectrum and other frequencies “to simplify new device setup, extend the low-bandwidth working range of devices, and help devices stay online and up-to-date even if they are outside the range of home Wi-Fi.” It essentially will be sharing a portion of your internet bandwidth with your neighbors and passersby. PLEASE LISTEN UP. The fact that Amazon plans to give away what belongs to you without asking permission is disgusting. Should you wish to get more frustrated with the home delivery deity, check this out. Amazon will launch Sidewalk automatically on June 8, 2021, unless customers opt out before then.

It’s easy to opt out, but how would you know to do it? You didn’t receive a notice from Amazon or Ring, did you? No, you did not. I don’t know about you, but I’m paying a ton of money for my internet connection and it’s disturbing that Amazon intends to leech off my network silently and invisibly.

Here’s how to opt out. Ring customers can update their Amazon Sidewalk preferences from the Control Center in the Ring app or at the Ring website. Echo customers can update their Amazon Sidewalk preferences in the Alexa app by going to Settings, Account Settings, then Amazon Sidewalk. There you will find a toggle to disable Sidewalk. Note that this setting is not available in the PC version of Alexa.  Use your mobile phone or tablet instead.

There’s good news for Ring doorbell users. Sidewalk is not present on the typical doorbell camera device, but it is on their Floodlight Cam, Spotlight Cam Mount and Spotlight Cam Wired units. If you have any of those, go to the Ring app and select Control Center, then scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on Amazon Sidewalk.

So, what’s the purpose of Sidewalk? Well, here’s how Amazon explains it, “Amazon Sidewalk is a shared network that helps devices work better. Operated by Amazon at no charge to customers, Sidewalk can help simplify new device setup, extend the low-bandwidth working range of devices to help find pets or valuables with Tile trackers, and help devices stay online even if they are outside the range of their home Wi-Fi. In the future, Sidewalk will support a range of experiences from using Sidewalk-enabled devices, such as smart security and lighting and diagnostics for appliances and tools.”

I have two major issues with Sidewalk. First, Amazon wants to create their BLE network using our stuff. That is cavalier behavior. Second, this is new technology with profound potential to go sideways or be abused by bad actors. It might become the target of hackers who would have a desire to turn on your camera and spy on you. It would be like someone you don’t know, sticking gobs of bubblegum on your sidewalk in front of your home.

Congress needs to get off their butts and pass some bills to create budgets for technology infrastructure that would make internet connections ubiquitously available. While we wait, companies like Xfinity (Comcast) and Verizon (AT&T) are providing hotspots and local area networks to give individuals and businesses seamless connections. These services are provided and supported as a service to the community while Amazon’s intent is providing internet bandwidth they will take from others.

If you want more details, USA Today has a good article here. And if you are like me, geek to the beak, you can read what PC Magazine wrote about Sidewalk here.

Please feel free to send this post to others. Let’s spread the word across all the social media sites. As for you, it’s time to opt out, unless you enjoy giving some powerful people more power over you.

INSURRECTION AT THE DIRECTION

Charge Trump for January 6th or Shut Up!

We have lots of people in this country who talk a good game but don’t always put their money where their money is. Take the Democrats, for example. Maybe they should ask for recounts in those states where Trump won the 2020 Election. It would distract the Trumpers and send others into defensive mode. Who knows, maybe Biden won Texas and Florida.

The Huffington Post published a disturbing article under the headline, “Oath Keepers Leader Poised For Trump To Make Gang His Militia.” Stewart Rhodes head of the lunatics, said this, “We want him to declare an insurrection, and to call us up as the militia.” Why, Stewart? So you can complete your work?

Stewart Rhodes

I am not making this stuff up. The unsealed indictment reveals new details about the Capitol riot and four more co-defendants have been brought into the conspiracy, bringing the total to 16. The defendants have been charged with conspiring to obstruct Congress’s confirmation of the 2020 presidential election and were among a group of Oath Keepers in combat uniforms and tactical vests who marched up the steps of the Capitol and stormed inside. Mr. Rhodes is listed as “Person One” in the indictment. The bothersome question is whether his band of misfits will attempt another overthrow of the US Government.

The more insane part of the Oath Keepers’ plan was Rhodes’ illusion that members of Antifa would become involved in the January 6th Capitol confrontations and provoke Trump to enact martial law with the Oath Keepers as his militia. REALLY? There are three problems with this assumption. 1. Antifa is not an organized gang or group. It’s a small bunch of anarchists who favor smaller events such as that which took place in Charlottesville. 2. Why would Antifa, a supposed anti-fascist group, defend the Capitol? They would NEVER defend Congress and, 3. Trump take an action? Are you kidding? His only consistent decision in the Oval Office was ordering diet Cokes.

We all know that grown men who act out as wannabe soldiers of misfortune are not the brightest bulbs in the bunch. The Oath Keepers are a gang of losers who follow a man who doesn’t put the seat up when he urinates. This balding, middle-aged fart-generator wears a patch on his left eye and parades around like Captain Hook. The organization claimed a membership of 35,000 back in 2016, though the Anti-Defamation League estimated its membership at several thousand. Credible researchers conclude the number is probably no higher than 5,000. Antifa probably has an equal number of lunatics from the far left. Why do we care? Because the FBI has declared that both groups are “domestic terrorists” and the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys are also labeled “hate groups.”

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) lists the group’s founder, [Elmer] Stewart Rhodes, as a known extremist and describes his announced plans to create localized militia units as “frightening.” The SPLC says the Oath Keepers’ leader espouses several conspiracy and legal theories associated with the sovereign citizen movement and the white supremacist posse comitatus movement. Great, well at least we know where they live, right? To me, these guys are the KKK, but instead of sheets they dress up in camo and carry weapons of mass destruction. Trump may have believed they would take his not too subtle cues and stop the steal on January 6, 2021.

The 45th President said at the rally before the insurrection, “We’re going to walk down to the Capitol, and we’re going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women, and we’re probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them, because you’ll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength, and you have to be strong.” There’s little difference between strongarming and taking something from someone else. When strongarming, you must be prepared to use force or violence against your foe. In his speech riddled with violent imagery and calls to fight harder than before, Trump stated they hadn’t physically attacked to get what they wanted in the past and this was the day to fight hard and be strong to accomplish what they wanted. If stopping the codification of the 2020 electoral votes was the goal, then asking the mob to intercede was breaking the law.

If arresting Stewart Rhodes for the insurrection is okay with law enforcement, why haven’t they arrested Donald John Trump as a Capitol Hill riot co-conspirator? Without Trump proclaiming a rigged election, announcing the Stop the Steal campaign, calling his more violent followers to D.C. on that specific day and urging them to march to Congress and be strong to save America, the riot and insurrection would never have happened.

Adolf Hitler didn’t personally put six million Jews on trains and march them into the gas chambers, others did his dirty work. Would we have charged, tried and convicted Hitler at Nuremberg had he been alive after the war? Yes! The deaths, directly or indirectly, of five people cannot be compared to the Holocaust but sedition, treason and inciting an insurrection are crimes in America. Why are we not going after the clear PERSON ONE?

Should you be worried about how America would look to the rest the world arresting a former president, stop. It would underscore that we are a true democracy. Trump may be guilty of many crimes and misdemeanors, but this will all take time. When the insurrectionists are sitting in jail, I hope they will finally come to their senses and reckon with the truth. They were royally screwed by Donald Trump and his lies. They were following a false prophet who led them into a revolution. They were trampling on the very government and Constitution they claim to have taken an oath to protect.

We cannot outlaw the KKK, the Oath Keepers, the Communist party or the Proud Boys but we can make their lives horrible and demonstrate to the real God-fearing, hardworking taxpayers that the incredibly dim insurrectionists are the cancer on Democracy. No thinking person in America wants Trump to become a martyr, but certainly he needs to be held accountable for his attempt to steal an election. Trump is the true gang leader of the mob. We must cut off the head of the snake.

SYSTEMIC WHITEWASHING

State Censorship of Education

One of the terms I learned as a kid in Pittsburgh was “uppity.” It was typically applied to African Americans, who white people called “colored.” I attended a men’s breakfast last week and was shocked to hear a white man use the term “colored” to describe a Black man in a racist video he shared. But then, this happened in Florida.

I have been scolded for calling former president Donald Trump a racist, but unless we agree on the definition of certain words, we cannot have a productive discussion. Mr. Trump once defended his actions in a 1970s civil rights suit for scheming to keep Blacks out of properties he owned. He also bought a full-page newspaper ad claiming that the Central Park Five should be put to death for crimes they did not commit. The man has never denounced white supremacists, and his comments and tweets after changing the law that his company broke in the 1970s, show that he is a racist. The icing on the cake, however, was his active campaign to fight against the New York Times’ 1619 Project by attempting to withhold federal funds from the educator who used that document while  teaching America history. That was far from uppity; it was downright racist.

Let’s drill down on uppity. Taking liberties and assuming airs beyond one’s place in a social hierarchy might be seen as uppity, but the roots of that word are despicable. It’s a purely American term first used by Blacks to describe other Blacks who were too self-assertive. Some claim the first recorded use was by Uncle Remus, the narrator of a collection of African American folktales compiled and adapted by Joel Chandler Harris and published in book form in 1881. So, like the “N-word” and “Uncle Tom,” “uppity” was used by Black people to describe each other but took on a deeply racist tone when used by white people.

Those states having a Donald Trump sycophant in charge make laws that forbid their educational systems of teaching a disturbing, yet absolutely truthful, view of American history as it applies to race. Here are two disturbing quotes. Florida Governor DeSantis says that teachers should not be “indoctrinating kids with fad-ish ideologies” while Richard Corcoran, the Commissioner of the Florida Board of Education, brags, “I was able to censor teachers” who he claimed had displayed Black Lives Matter posters in their classrooms to help kids understand the meaning of the phrase.

When Barack Obama was elected president in 2008, lots of white people chanted “We want to take our country back.” That’s a great slogan for Native Americans who numbered more than 60 million in 1492 but are down to about one million today. They never got a chance to take their country back. What did they get? They got reservations, the right to run gambling casinos and licenses to sell cancer sticks. We continue to teach a distorted history of Native Americans that the tribes have been protesting for years.

There is a systemic whitewashing (pun intended) that takes place in this country every day. By the way, it’s not just Black and Tribal history that get changed but there are also manipulations of other aspects of our past. Insanely, we lie about the origin of baseball. The Doubleday myth claims the game was invented in America, while it actually was inspired by a children’s game in the U.K. named “rounders.”

The 1905 Mills Commission was formed to get to the bottom of the sport. The nations’ ego needed baseball to be a game purely of American origin. In 1908, the commission declared that baseball had zero connection to the game from Britain and that it was invented by Abner Doubleday in Cooperstown, New York, which is the location of the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame. Problem is that was all a lie.

Even back then, “far-left” newspaper writers chased the truth. The “rounders theory” was supported by prominent sportswriter Henry Chadwick, a native of Britain. In a 1903 article he noted the common factors between rounders and baseball, which initiated the need to put a stop to this “British propaganda.” The truth is baseball is so similar to rounders it was an embarrassment that grown men in America were playing it for money. So, there’s but one example of an untrue myth totally sanctioned by the US government and perpetrated on the public.

America is often full of shit. We had the Attorney General William Barr telling us there is no systemic racism in American law enforcement, while his very own Department of Justice was investigating many police departments across the country for that very cancer. We have a disgraced, deranged and diabolical former president claiming that Democrats hate America and want to poison the minds of our kids with negative history about how the country was founded and grew. The New York Times is correct. American history began in 1619, the year the first slave was brought to this land to form a more perfect economy.

The Republican zealots in the Senate voted down the January 6th Commission because they want to change history about what happened that day. When the headline in the newspaper declares LESSONS ON RACIAL HISTORY UNDER FIRE, some white politicians want to blatantly say, “Nothing to see here. Move along.” They are afraid of Doanld Trump, they are afraid of the truth, and they are afraid of history. They worry that African Americans will start to become “uppity” if we teach the truth of our racist past. By fighting against these truths, they show their belief that Black people are beneath them and must occupy a lower place in our social hierarchy. They want to not only teach lies but also assign an entire race of people to a lower rung on the hierarchy ladder.

I don’t want an idiot like Ron DeSantis determining what my grandkids are taught in school and I don’t need ideologs determining the meanings of the first and second amendments. These people go after social media companies who have cancelled policy offenders like Donald Trump while also censoring teachers. There’s no logic. It’s simply a matter of do as I say and not do as I do.

These fools want to do is strike the word “lynching” from our history. They would like to believe the May 31, 1921 Massacre in Tulsa, Oklahoma never happened. If they had their way, the term “Jim Crow Laws” would not be in our textbooks. But in the end, kids of all colors will learn from the streets, from rap songs, from documentaries and from movies. The truth will eventually win and when it does, it’s merely being aggressive against hate, and not being “uppity,” at all.

HAVE YOU NO DECENCY!

Republican Greene New Deal Sucks

So far, I have managed to avoid writing about the junior representative from Georgia’s 14th congressional district, Marjorie Taylor Greene. As they say on the playground, however, she started it. Her first Democratic opponent in her run for Congress dropped out for family reasons. The next candidate was underfunded and not viable. The Peach State is highly conservative and Republican so it would have been an uphill battle for anyone, but what was left can best be described as roadkill.

There is no I.Q. test administered to those who run for office, whether it be for dog catcher or president. There’s also the interesting fact that some candidates have been declared dead before an election, but still won. In my estimation, a dead representative for Georgia’s 14th would have been more productive.

The 47-year-old Greene is an ideolog who has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Georgia. She graduated from South Forsyth High School in Cumming, Georgia, a town that until 35 years ago had a law that prohibited African Americans from staying within its borders overnight.

According to Atlanta’s ABC affiliate WSB-TV, Marjorie Taylor Greene filed homestead exemptions on two homes, which is a violation of state law. She claimed it was a “paperwork mistake” and it’s since been cleared up, but she continues to stain her reputation in real time every day by just opening her mouth.

The list of positions she’s taken on almost every issue is eye opening, and she enjoys pulling stunts to get attention. Greene was early to assert that Donald Trump was elected in a landslide and the 2020 election was stolen from him. She also filed articles of impeachment against Joe Biden the day after his inauguration alleging abuse of power. Now she is misleading America once again.

She compared US mask and vaccine mandates to the rights taken away from Jewish people when they were put on trains, sent to concentration camps and executed by Germany during the Holocaust. While her antics were blown off the front page by a mass shooting in San Jose, California, her words finally warranted a response from Republican leaders, although they waited five days before condemning her remarks.

Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said this, “Marjorie is wrong, and her intentional decision to compare the horrors of the Holocaust with wearing masks is appalling. The Holocaust is the greatest atrocity committed in history. The fact that this needs to be stated today is deeply troubling.” Okay, but he then went on to accuse the Democrats of anti-Semitism. Why? Nine people lost their lives in San Jose, Kevin’s home state, yet he took a cheap shot at the other party. Mr. McCarthy shows himself to be a lowlife by his awkward attempt to semi-reprimand a member of his caucus. Kevin has the power to throw Greene out of the caucus, which could lead to her expulsion from the House of Representatives.

Wooden Puppet

Expulsion is the most serious form of disciplinary action that can be taken against a Member of Congress. The United States Constitution (Article I, Section 5, Clause 2) provides that “Each House [of Congress] may determine the Rules of its proceedings, punish its members for disorderly behavior, and, with the concurrence of two-thirds, expel a member.” On the other hand, censure, a less severe form of disciplinary action, is an official sanction of a member but does not remove them from office. Ms. Greene could be headed to one of those two destinations if she doesn’t clean up her act.

Just as Kevin McCarthy and his gang of political thugs removed Liz Cheney from her leadership roles because her viewpoints were said to be “disruptive” to the caucus, only a fool wouldn’t see that Taylor Greene’s harmful and misinformed opinions are distracting the country from what the Republicans want to accomplish. We aren’t quite sure what those goals are because the party still doesn’t have a written platform. Their only discernable goal is pleasing the big orange guy.

Marjorie Taylor Greene doesn’t have the gravitas or profundity to navigate the aisles of Congress. Hell, I’ll wager that she would mess up a trip to the 7-11 to buy a six-pack of beer. She openly speaks her mind, but there’s nothing in that organ that produces any intelligent discourse. She would sound articulate if she was a homeless person smoking a cigarette standing in front of that 7-11, but as the representative of one of the more important states in our country she’s nothing less than a buffoon of epic proportion.

I just finished reading a new translation of a book titled, “Night,” a 1960 work by Elie Wiesel. This true story is based on his and his father’s Holocaust experiences in the Nazi German concentration camps at Auschwitz and Buchenwald in 1944-45. Sadly, his father didn’t make it. If only Ms. Greene would take the time to read this short, 120-page book, perhaps she would experience the visceral pain and intellectual slap of Wiesel’s experiences. Being asked to wear a fucking mask to protect yourself and others from a deadly virus is nothing like being starved to death in a prison camp and watching your family being thrown alive into a crematorium.

Marjorie Taylor Greene is not fit to be a citizen of this great country, let alone a representative in Congress. She was elected to that office, but most experts agree that if the election was held today, with any decent human being running against her, she would lose. She should be recalled by the electorate, but unfortunately too many of them believe her lies and carry with them the embedded racism and anti-Semitic viewpoints that her remarks stimulate and validate.

She doesn’t realize that her comments are lessening the importance of the tragedy of Nazi death camps. She can’t comprehend that her lack of empathy and disregard of the real pain suffered by a generation of Americans aids and abets prejudges. An African American says, “Black Lives Matter,” and Marjorie Taylor Greene would thoughtlessly answer, “All lives Matter.” Well then, why does she walk on the unmarked graves of Jews? This Republican Greene New Deal sucks!

THE DIMINISHING AMERICAN I.Q.

Does Our Size Make Us Dumber?

People use intelligence as a weapon. I do it, perhaps you do it, many of us do it, but why? Let’s begin with the worst infection that kills human life: War. Edwin Starr’s 1970 hit song said it best, War, I despise, it means destruction to innocent lives, war means tears to thousands of mothers’ eyes. When their sons go out to fight and lose their lives, War, huh, yeah, (What is it good for?) Absolutely (nothing)!

Culture Club updated the theme in 1984 with “The War Song.” It says, War, war is stupid, and people are stupid, and love means nothing in some strange quarters, War, war is stupid, and people are stupid! Okay, we get it. We just saw a stupid war played out once again. Stupid terrorists in the Gaza Strip launched missiles into Israel, which retaliated by bombing the shit out of the strip. To be clear, the Gaza Strip is 150 square miles of territory with about two million people and no army. Israel has nine million people and an armed force of 120,000 troops with another 500,000 on reserve. This was just two unfriendly neighbors shouting at each other with weapons resulting in hundreds of deaths. I hope they can keep the ceasefire.

I read an amazing news story today that says 42% of Russians refuse to get vaccinated against the coronavirus. They have this guy named PUTIN and his buddy, Russia’s former Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. He has expressed support for compulsory vaccinations as the country grapples with slower-than-hoped-for coronavirus vaccine uptake. Why don’t they trust the “miracle cure” vaccine that their own country produced faster than any other? Could it be concern that the guy running the place has no problem putting poison in his critics’ tea?

We are doing much better battling Covid-19 here in the United States and our three vaccines are bringing down the case numbers. Even so, there is a disparity between those who are getting the vaccine and those who won’t. A troubling article in the New York Times stated, “It is common to hear about two different demographic groups that are hesitant to receive a Covid-19 vaccination: Republican voters and racial minorities, especially Black and Latino Americans. For Republicans, the attitude is connected to a general skepticism of government and science. For Black and Hispanic Americans, it appears to stem from the country’s legacy of providing substandard medical treatment, and sometimes doing outright harm, to minorities.”

There are also religious attitudes from sects like the Christian Scientists and Anti-science Evangelicals, but Americans are generally not against medicines. We take a pill to wake up, a pill to go to sleep and a pill to read this blog. So, what gives?

The greatest influence on virus denial was the handling of the 2020 global pandemic by the White House. Its revolts against mask wearing and the pitch to “not let the virus rule your life” accelerated the penetration of the disease. Those who created doubt about the advice of medical experts are responsible for much of the vaccine hesitancy in this country. When the far-right media told their viewers, they don’t have to be vaccinated if they are young, that masks only make things worse and that vaccines will hurt you more than help, they became medical terrorists in my estimation.

Rand Paul claimed that if you had Covid you don’t need to get a vaccine. He has a right to state his belief, but it’s only an opinion. He is not an expert in viruses; he is an eye doctor with poor vision.

When we were a smaller country, we had a stronger belief in our government. It led our people to fight in three wars and send their young sons to Vietnam, but for what? Absolutely nothing! But this piece isn’t so much about war, as who decides to help fight a war and who stays behind. One comedian called those who won’t get a Covid vaccine “freeloaders.” Yes, that’s a bit harsh, but funny, nonetheless. We all know people who take advantage of others’ generosity without giving anything in return but isn’t it strange that in this world of givers and takers, it’s the takers who are NOT taking the shot. Besides the twist of the meaning there is some evidence that when a person cannot comprehend how something works, they won’t trust it.

Republicans aren’t stupid and I’m sure they don’t want to get coronavirus, but they think it’s cool to not get a shot. Not sure why that is. They approve large sums of money for the military but refuse to improve infrastructure, They read the Bible every Sunday but can’t find the funds to end poverty. They like good roads and would cry bloody murder if a bridge collapsed in their town, but they are following the old maxim that when it’s NOT MY IDEA then it’s bad.

I was having dinner with a smart man who said, “There is no way to give everyone a raise to $15 an hour.” When I asked him why, he replied that “It would destroy the economy.” Would it? Really? We spent trillions of dollars on blowing up things in the Middle East but we cannot take care of the people who live and work here? The “America First” dogma of the last five years was a damn lie. When we placed tariffs on China, our soybean farmers went out of business and we all paid more for everything. We must not solve trade problems with tactics that hurt our citizens.

If you told all those people who haven’t gotten the vaccine that Trump would return instantly to the presidency if they did, the lines to secure immunity would be wrapping around blocks. Sad, but that is true. You see, the people who are sticking with the big lie and pushing back against the progress we’ve made with Covid, don’t care about truth or logic, they just want their false prophet back. If they really cared about all Americans, they would step up and help. They may not be dumb, but they certainly are foolish.

We should take 50% of our military budget and invest it in education. It’s clear that the poor job we’ve done in schools means not only that Johnny can’t read, but Suzy will let them take her rights away. Those who want to block abortions also want to cut money for social services and education for those families with “too many kids.” Large families are harder to manage. America’s size is keeping us down and maybe even lowering the average I.Q. So, why are the fucking “geniuses” still running Congress? Oh yeah, we voted without thinking.

PANDEMIC BY-PRODUCT

Capitalism Goes Back to School

You have probably heard a theory about why employment figures haven’t roared back to pre- pandemic levels in America. The grand presumption from Republicans is people are not returning to their previous jobs because they are making so much money from the government’s pandemic relief checks.

As you might suspect, I have thoughts on this. First, let’s examine unemployment history. In October of 2009, right after the financial collapse, unemployment was at 10%. After a great recovery under two presidents, Obama and Trump, that number fell to 3.5%, one of the lowest unemployment numbers of this century. Then, Covid-19 came to the world and unemployment jumped to 14.8%. The federal government handed out assistance checks to people and some companies enrolled in the Paycheck Protection Plan (PPP) to obtain government loans to pay employees and keep their businesses afloat.

In March 2021, US unemployment dropped to 6%, but instead of cheering on this great improvement the GOP complained that recovery was taking too long. They insisted that all pandemic relief payments needed to end so that poverty and need would drive people back to work. Okay, that description is tilted and subjective but let’s stop and think about this. The Republicans may be wrong.

I found this interesting viewpoint in The Hill, “Is questioning whether unemployed Americans respond to the availability of unemployment compensation just another way of insulting their intelligence? If one can make more money being paid to stay at home, a rational person should do that, mindful of any effect on future employability, of course. Do we really need proof of the obvious? To be sure, it is a bit cynical to frame this as ‘being paid to stay home,’ but that’s what it is — or more neutrally, compensation for being unemployed, which one will lose by taking a job.”

The restaurant industry is facing a huge workforce challenge. I tried to go into a Starbucks and another breakfast establishment recently only to see signs that they were closed because not enough workers showed up to work that day.

Here’s a headline from the Restaurant Manifesto blogsite: The Restaurant Labor Shortage Was Inevitable – Stimulus payments aren’t the only thing keeping workers on the sidelines. They say, “Some hospitality professionals have abandoned the industry altogether. Months of waiting to return to their old jobs has left many workers worried about being left alone at the altar. Others chose to relocate to places where jobs are plentiful—cities like Miami where disruption to restaurant businesses has been ameliorated by more permissive public health policies.” I would add that some workers didn’t want to return to a job placing them in direct contact with mask-less customers.

The article continued, “Some individuals who’ve lost their jobs also lost their health insurance coverage during the worst public health crisis in a generation. When the industry shut down, many owners immediately laid off their entire staff, no questions asked, even their most loyal workers.”

One of my suppositions is that laborers who were isolated and quarantined had time to question what is important to them. They started to see the difference between a low-paying job with ill-tempered supervisors as compared to fulfilling work that paid them properly under managers who treated them respectfully and fairly. It’s not hard to find someone who has worked in the food business with many stories of rotten experiences, including tales of sexual harassment, tips being stolen by co-workers and long shifts with meager compensation. Maybe that’s why they aren’t going back to their former jobs.

The good news is capitalism never sleeps, it continuously finds ways to survive and grow. What has the pandemic mentality forced companies to do? Well, motivation is at the top of the list. Companies are offering bonuses just to get people in the door to fill out an application. From free food to fifty bucks, the corporate lords have found religion – MONEY.

While trying to get more workers, they are also reviewing their hourly wages and benefits such as healthcare. They are now forced to compete with not only direct competitors but also other industries. Our media outlets love to point out how “bad” it is to work for Amazon, but their warehouse jobs are plentiful and they pay well. You can work in a restaurant and hope your daily tips are substantial or you can punch-in every morning to feed the monster Jeff Bezos created and making good moola.

It’s appalling to me that the Republicans assume everyone getting financial assistance is scamming the federal government. Instead of investigating and understanding real people problems, they just cut off the money, stop the abortions and make it harder to vote. Thanks for nothing. Maybe it’s time you do some research and listen to objective logic.

Congress has become a hydra, with each of its two heads canceling the other. The Democrats want to help but fail to unite around one solid plan. The Republicans lay in wait until an idea floats to the front, then they attack it regardless of its substance. I cannot believe that grown men in Congress are still afraid of Donald Trump. It’s clear that Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy are nothing but Trump puppets, lacking backbone and vision.

If we take 6% as a starting place for recovery, we could be much more optimistic and perhaps see that slower reduction of unemployment might be driven by businesses reluctant to overextend themselves until the coast is clear. I suggest Republicans open the book about the disaster of a global pandemic to learn the number of permanently closed businesses. If Lindsey Graham knew the real number of those places that closed forever, and counted all the workers they used to employ, he might be a bit less vindictive toward people who are getting checks. If you are curious, South Carolina currently has an unemployment rate of 5.1%, and in government employees they are at  negative-3.5%. Time to give out some government jobs, Lindsey.

THE WOKE JOKE

American Trends & Fads

Americans either stay on top of things, or they don’t, and when they don’t, they may feel a bit out of place with the conversations around them. For the longest time, I wondered how many folks understood the term “woke” to describe people.

One of my favorite resources for understanding the street interpretations of the words and phrases in Americana patois is the UrbanDictionary.com. They define “woke” as the act of a person being pretentious about their care of a social issue. The attempts of some to impress by dishing out their feelings of importance about issues does overwhelm at times, but I think the crowd-sourced Urban Dictionary misses the mark by weaving pretention into its definition. It was similar to the way Fox News spent so much time disparaging the concept. It’s like a mother beginning to use Facebook and then her kids deride the platform because it has gone mainstream and is no longer hip.

Hip is a baby boomer word. Back in the day we used it when we liked some thing or person. When a band was hip, it didn’t mean “hipster,” like today, it meant the group was trendy, cool and up on all the latest things. Some say it was a perversion of the word “hep,” as in “hep cat” from the Jazz era, but who knows? The only hip baby boomers care about today is the joint that connects their legs to their upper torsos.

American trendsetters often guided us toward the next big things, but they weren’t always right. If you bought a Betamax video recorder, you may have been hip but you were also wrong. During the fashion era, woke fashion leaders told us guys to wear skinny ties, then wide ties, then no ties at all. Women know this game much more profoundly than men because their styles are annually dictated by the wild ideas of Paris and New York. It takes a long time for JCPenney to catch the fever of a new style, but by the time they do it’s no longer woke.

It’s funny to me how politicians get their underwear in a wad, whether they are wearing briefs, tidy whities or if they have gone commando. Thanks to the Urban Dictionary, we know that means not wearing underwear. The origins for this are either “out in the open” or “ready for action,” but one must know the difference between a fad and a trend.

In 1982, I read the book Megatrends: Ten New Directions Transforming Our Lives. This was written in our pre-internet days, so the author used newspaper coverage as a gauge for analyzing data. He simply counted the number of column-inches each subject got in all the newspapers and used that to determine how those topics were trending. He also explained the difference between a short-term fad, like Davy Crockett hats, and the true megatrends that propelled our nation. By reading that book I learned that northern industrial cities would lose populations and southern cities would grow, and that’s exactly what happened.

In June 2020, the magazine Psychology Today published an article titled, The Promise and Problems of Being Woke. Here’s an excerpt, Many people, especially the youth, have a heightened awareness of our troubled past and, understandably, seek to correct our collective wrongs. This is where the term “woke” comes into play. It is defined as, ‘aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice).’” Note the difference between the Urban Dictionary definition.  In this case, being woke is all about alertness with no posing implied.

The article continues, “Perhaps the long-overdue correction of ‘wokism’ is, sometimes, leading to an over-correction of sorts.” We saw that recently with the uproar about the Academy Awards that led to the Twitter campaign of #AcademySoWhite. The Academy acted and moved the needle rapidly because they had a huge backlog of African American scripts, projects and casting. Aside from the host-less, humor-less awards show this year, there were so many honors for projects by people of color that someone commented, “Why is everything about Black people?” That wasn’t racist; it was merely an observation. It reminded me of being the only white person at a 1970s Motown review concert. I loved the music but wondered why I was the only white guy there.

Our society often uses political correctness and shunning to block people with different opinions. There was a strange reaction when the term #BlackLivesMatter surfaced. First, it wasn’t very “woke” to say “all lives matter.” The goal of that phrase wasn’t promoting equality but rather diluting the indictment. When Trump stated that the “BLM movement is racist,” all chances of respect were lost. Most people don’t understand that slogans like “blue lives matter” create one colossal petri dish of cancel culture.

Here is a question. If the idea of being woke is “seeking to correct our collective wrongs,” then aggressors who push back at the woke patrol are attempting to stop that effort. The rebellion by some Republican lawmakers against the New York Times 1619 Project is an attempt to block truth from the next generation so they will never do the “woke” thing. I used to use the term “mulatto” when referring to people of mixed race, then stopped using the word when I discovered it’s appalling “nod and wink” origin as the offspring of a male donkey (a jack) and a female horse (a mare). A person of mixed race is not an animal, they are a person. Once I had the correct information, I was able to eliminate a wrong. I’m not woke for knowing, I’m just trying to do the right thing.

I would suggest that the term and concept of “woke,” is not a trend but a fad. People may hang their hat on the word, but the expression and label don’t automatically fix the world. “Woke” is just another class one joins. The belief beyond the word has the potential of profoundly changing the world. And of course, conservatives hate the word because they know, deep down inside, they will never be allowed in the club. Poor babies.

The foundation of the woke movement is people with strong social convictions wanting to make a better world, but it’s a world they are defining, not really a democrat truth. I might get canceled for suggesting here, but all they want us all to do is wake up and smell the coffee, or for a woke person, smell the cappuccino.
