IS FACEBOOK PROMOTING FAKE NEWS?

Social Media is More Powerful Than Trump

Americans will believe anything presented in an official way. We are about to learn some lessons that cannot be unlearned no matter what anyone says or does. People are so fixed in their positions that they will often use one lie to discredit another lie. Allow me to paint the picture.

Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, has sat through a number of interviews lately trying to explain the policies of his social media giant. He says they were created to keep America safer and less duped by nefarious online characters. In my latest book, Gold, God, Guns & Goofballs, I dedicate a couple of chapters to the ways social media is ill-equipped for this task. With the possibility that many outrageous lies from Donald Trump and his reelection campaign will land on Facebook, what is the Zuck to do? He hasn’t a plan.

I like to use language correctly and accurately. A favorite phrase of my high school English teacher was, “be specific!” When you call something a “safe zone,” please be sure that no specific person will be blown up there. Let’s think about the term “social media.” It’s a vague phrase, but over time we have learned that its websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or participate in social networking. Do the owners of social networking websites or applications have the right to censor the content that is shared on their platforms? People and groups are now challenging Facebook to decide the veracity of the content posted by its members. The people at Facebook can’t monitor every post fast enough, and after hearing Zuckerberg on NBC, they won’t being doing much more than they do now.

When Hillary Clinton said that the Russians are looking to co-opt one of the Democratic candidates running for President, her claim was widely reposted and the comments flowed. How can Facebook cut that off? A sidebar comment will be appropriate here. Why is Hillary Clinton doing anything to affect the campaigns of those running for President? Oh, yeah, she still feels that social media hurt her in 2016. I get that, but why attack anyone without proof? Go be a grandmother, Hill.

Now we learn that Mitt Romney has a fake Twitter feed under the name “Pierre Delecto” who appeared to be an anti-Trump guy. The page has been taken down, but what is going on? When someone with that much credibility uses Twitter to stir up some dust behind Trump, I can’t help wondering if it was just an experiment or an effort to learn how to use Twitter politically.

I was banned by Twitter for 12 hours because I called Lindsey Graham a “political whore,” which seemed to be the best way to characterize his bouncing back and forth on matters concerning Trump. After all, the second meaning of the word “whore” conveys exactly my thought, “a person who is regarded as willing to do anything to get a particular thing.” I was eventually returned to active status, but I wonder who at Twitter decides what I can say? They let Trump post anything, even FAKE NEWS and purposeful lies that can damage a person and a country.

The reason why people like Joe Biden are so concerned about the policies at Facebook, Twitter and all the other social media sites is because they understand the power of those platforms. Our First Amendment protects the “press” from censorship. Social media, however, is NOT the press, even though they are used to spread the written word quite nicely. If I write something on Twitter or Facebook, wouldn’t I be the publisher, it is my account? I’m just using the social media servers to distribute my content. Why do they get to edit my words? Their “standards” are not a free pass to the final determination of what is true. What is about to change and maybe codified in law is that Facebook and Twitter could be classified as a publisher, therefore would actually have more First Amendment rights.

My conclusion on all this is much like what people think about video games. Many of them are ultra-violent expressions cloaked in a game. Some say that professional football is just war put into a game. But as more and more people are drawn into video games, players are now being organized into large tournaments where they can win millions of dollars. Does that make it right? Everyone knows that the use of violence in many games make them more exciting.

The geeks who own social media companies have found ways to mine data for monetary rewards. They created a marketing platform for companies, groups and political candidates who pay money for ads and placement on the site. They are not going to take every ad, they do have procedures, but they are not going to stop the money coming in from you, me or Russia. They take the money and run the ads while having no ability to monitor comments or reposts. They are lying about how it works.

Just like video game makers aren’t going to take the violence out of their products, social media is not going to protect your privacy any more than they must, and things that cost too much money will be delayed. Trump’s fake news is powerful, and his campaign has tons of money to spread his words further than Facebook or Twitter can manage. If Russia decides to push against Trump, he will not be helped by any social media site. They simply don’t know what to do.  It’s a beast out of control!

The book that tells it like it is…

Gold, God, Guns & Goofballs shows how we’ve wasted our GOLD on bad wars and corruption. While GOD is there for many people as a spiritual enrichment and the provider of glowing feelings, the truth is just praying and believing will not change our major arc. We don’t determine who gets a GUN. We aren’t sure if we have paramilitary groups ready to storm the White House or a White Castle. There is no control of weapons. The GOOFBALLS with the power constantly try to manipulate us into spending more money on bombs and tanks and wars. When all of our institutions are infected with neglect and fall in disrepair, we will only have ourselves to blame. This book is not an antidote for the left or right, it’s an accelerant to move the middle off their collective asses to go do something positive for America.

THE BOTCHED BOLTON BOOT

Just Another Neo-Con Job

Donald Trump doesn’t know how to hire the right people and he certainly doesn’t know how to fire them. But there is something much deeper here that escapes Trump’s ability to comprehend.

Trump is like P.T. Barnum, the circus man who truly believed one can hype their way into the hearts of the American public and fool them with illusions while taking their money. The world is more complicated than selling a ticket to the big top. In the end, most of the circus enterprises in America went broke because their owners couldn’t balance the cost of doing business with the activities of their competitors. Many circus companies have multiple names because eating each other up was the only way to survive. They ran up debt, exactly like Trump is doing with America.

John Bolton is just another Neo-Con with a convincing talent of combative rhetoric. In my book Gold, God, Guns & Goofballs, you will find a chapter titled The Three Legged Stool. It highlights the three forces that attempt to control our government — the Evangelicals, the rich owner class and the Neo-Cons. Some people fit into all three categories, but John Bolton is only a Neo-Con.

Dick Cheney and other Neo-Cons see nation building and regime changes as necessary methods of keeping the world safe and helping the US grow strong. Their mistakes have cost incredible amounts of blood in the streets and loss of treasures, but they are easily dismissed as a “greater good” the Neo-Cons believe they bring to world order.

It is no mystery that John Bolton deeply disagreed with Trump’s PR move to bring the Taliban to Camp David. It was also no surprise that one of the only Republicans to loudly voice disdain for this Trump folly was Liz Cheney, the daughter of Dick Cheney. You see, if anything, the Neo-Cons stick together.

Another Neo-Con is Lindsey Graham. On his web site he declared, “I have known John Bolton for many years and very much appreciate his service to our country in a variety of positions. John understands the world for what it is and the dangers that threaten America’s national security interests.” (I added the bolding.)

Deep down inside, Lindsey Graham knows that Donald Trump does not correctly see or understand the world. Graham, being a card-carrying member of the Neo-Con Club, was not about to put Bolton down because the Senator from South Carolina thinks and talks like Bolton.

The Donald doesn’t understand that right-winged white supremacists are not as powerful as the Neo-Cons in America. The Neo-Con, or New Conservative, movement was started by Jewish intellectuals in New York who believed the United States should do whatever it could to protect Israel. Trump gets that right, but what he fails to see is that Neo-Cons have no time for Nazis, the KKK or white supremacists. They feel only a need to protect the world from “evil doers.”

Not only did Trump dislike John Bolton’s outspokenness on many issues, he also figured out that Bolton was attempting to move into the “more important” position of Secretary of State. Trump hates people who are too aggressive. Bolton believed that Mike Pompeo, Trump’s boy, was looking for the exit ramp to run for Senator in his home state of Kansas.  Perhaps a miscalculation on his part, but in the end Trump needed someone he could spank for his stupid idea of doing a Taliban smores party at Camp David. Anyone other than Trump must always be blamed for something the press points out as asinine. I guess that is why we have a free press.

Bolton didn’t go quietly into the night. He quickly rebuked Trump, claiming he resigned and wasn’t fired. I’m not sure why that matters, but I do know that Trump never wants to be perceived as someone who has trouble working with people, even though the guy can’t work with anyone.

Over a hundred top people in Trump’s administration have been dismissed or resigned. As one of my favorite Trump loyalists said, “Well, at least he gets rid of the bad people.” WHAT? Those are all his people and he’s the reason they got into the White House. Once again, Trump claims he solved a problem that he created. What a douchebag.

I have never understood why civilian government appointees would be more militant and more eager to march into war than well-trained pentagon leaders. Who are these people who seek to use the military might of America as a political tool? Donald Trump would start a war if he thought it would guarantee his reelection.

This presidency will ultimately be seen as Trump declaring that EVERY DECISION he made was his decision. Those in position to give advice were only as valuable as the level of adulation they presented to his thin-skinned, narcissistic veneer. When an insecure person declares that they “took their own advice” on an important decision, we are in trouble. Who says that? The third person must hold more power than the person who is speaking. Now I am worried.

Trump is not the president for America today and he shouldn’t be the president tomorrow. As the world changes, it’s extremely clear that Trump will not change. He will never understand the world for what it is. He has damaged our standing and effectiveness on the planet. He is the biggest loser. Maybe his next reality TV show can be named Fat President Shrivels into Dust.

LEAST RACIST PERSON

Trump’s Personal Feedback Loop

An alcoholic typically underestimates the number of drinks they’ve had. A drug addict lives in denial and focuses on the next fix. Racists avoid that little dark spot in their soul and never admit the defect was placed there by someone else. People are not racists in a vacuum. Humans are not born as racists. And today (1-15-2018), on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, it might be quite appropriate to explore this subject.

Donald Trump gets into trouble with his mouth. He can line up his fine men to lie for him, but that doesn’t change what is inside this man’s heart. Our great Orange Leader looks down his nose at many different minority groups with his words, deeds and actions.

No one person can know if they are the most or least of any description or label they could place on themselves. I might say, I am the cleverest writer in the world. But how can I know that without intimate knowledge of the work of millions of other writers? That’s hardly a possible feat. So, who gave the Donald the power to examine all people on the Earth to determine their personal racism so he can declare his is the least?

What is racism? Well, the dictionary says, Racism is prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior. And to rub some salt in the wound, racism is the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.

It’s quite amazing that with Donald J. Trump’s “fine education” at military school and then at a “very good school” (Wharton Business School), Trump must have missed learning what words really mean. And now, we must deal with this major flaw in our 45th President.

Trump antagonizes as his main tactic. He directs that antagonization toward minorities, women and enemies. Does Donald Trump really believe he is superior to certain groups of people? His obsession with Barack Obama is an attempt to delegitimize him as an American. The leap between not being born on American soil, to labeling him as an “outsider,” to the notion that Obama is inferior because he was part African has been obvious from the beginning.

Trump has described himself as having “superior genes” and pronounced this as the reason he would always do better than others. He attributed his talents to his DNA, his gene pool, which determine race, color of skin, color of hair, and the like, but doesn’t guarantee success or failure. Trump believes his success draws a direct line between his “whiteness” and his power.

We have already heard him say how smart he is, even going so far to announce that he is “a very stable genius.” I.Q. is a sticky wicket. Once you declare your score, you will spend the rest of your days answering the question, “If you’re so damn smart then why (insert embarrassing question here)?”  If you are so smart and superior to us, Mr. Trump, then why the hell do more than 60% of the country think you are full of shit?

Like the drunk who keeps saying he wants one more drink, or the junky heating up one more spoon of love, Donald Trump wanders around the White House with his “executive time” of idle hours believing he is superior to other people.  He can say he’s the least racist person and that he never said “shithole countries” but it’s a little too late. Everyone knows he lies. He constantly denies anything he thinks the public, and especially the press, think was a mistake.

Let’s focus on the impact of what’s happening here. Trump doesn’t care about the so-called “Dreamers.” He would prefer to deport them all and start over with a whiter America. But he fails to understand the tide of demographics and the needs of millions of voting minorities in this country.

Women, of whatever color, deserve respect, thus the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements. African-Americans must be protected from police brutality and malpractice, as all citizens must be, thus #BlackLivesMatter. Hispanic or Latina Americans are on the march and they will not be stopped. Trump can complain about how they all got here, and scream about the need for his ill-advised wall, but immigrants are a major part of the American DNA. All Americans must be served, not antagonized, by this president, the leader of the free world.

That brings us to the question of President Donald Trump’s status as a card-carrying racist. If we are using words and actions to determine the definition of a man or, as Martin Luther King, Jr. would have said, if we judge Donald Trump not by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character, then, yes, Donald Trump is a racist.

He can deny it all he wants, but in the end, Donald Trump has just enough Richard Nixon, a dab of George Wallace and a heap of Fred Trump in his DNA to make him a terrible person; clearly unfit for office. It would be easy to say Trump’s attitudes are due to misaligned gene placement, but maybe the Donald was just raised to be a racist.

In 1927, during a KKK parade that turned into a riot, two Italian-Americans were murdered and many people were arrested. One of those arrested was Fred Trump of 175-24 Devonshire Road in Jamaica, New York, Donald Trump’s father. It’s unclear why he was there, but it does beg this question. Why did Donald Trump deny his father’s presence there for so many years? It’s another part of a sad pattern of lies, denials and deep-seated need for Trump to cleanse his image. Racism is a cancer that, certainly, Dr. Martin Luther, Jr. would say can be cured with love and understanding. Trump needs to fix DACA and show some love.
