What is really going on here?

With channel-to-channel coverage of the death and remembrances of John McCain, our Great Orange Leader felt compelled to start a fight with someone to get the spotlight back on him. Oh my, narcissism at its best.

As someone who worked in the field of high tech for more than fifteen years, I would like to shed some light on what is going on with Donald’s trumped up charge that Google, Facebook and Twitter are somehow biased against the President, Conservatives and Republicans.

This was the leader of the free world taking on search engines on TWITTER, “Google search results for “Trump News” shows only the viewing/reporting of Fake News Media. In other words, they have it RIGGED, for me & others, so that almost all stories & news is BAD. Fake CNN is prominent. Republican/Conservative & Fair Media is shut out. Illegal? 96% of results on “Trump News” are from National Left-Wing Media, very dangerous. Google & others are suppressing voices of Conservatives and hiding information and news that is good. They are controlling what we can & cannot see. This is a very serious situation-will be addressed!” Note to dumbbell, you did this on the internet and 91,000 people liked it and 26,000 retweeted it. I’m not sure why he complains about getting all that FREE coverage.

During the hearings on Capitol Hill, the members of Congress showed their complete lack of understanding about how the Internet and social media work, but the White House’s Flunky-in-Chief tops them. It’s also obvious that Fox News and their caged conservatives have no idea about how they work either. But that brings us to the real problem on the Internet, Donald Trump.

The technology and algorithms deployed by Google, Twitter and Facebook determine what is important by two major factors: How many links are connected to each page and how many people then click to those pages. In a sense, they measure popular vote. In the case of Donald Trump’s presidency, it’s a popular vote on a very unpopular person.

Internet research conducted during and right after the 2016 election showed that people were more likely to remember and pass along negative stories than positive ones. Back in the 1970s, the Ford Motor Company found that a bad product experience was passed along to 14 people, while a positive experience was mentioned to only four people. So we see consistency through the decades.

Think about it. When is the last time you picked up someone from the airport and they went on and on about having a positive flying experience? If they share what happened during the flight, chances are it will be a horror story. In fact, when I googled “positive air flight experience” all the articles were about airlines from other countries, not one reference to a U.S. airline was returned. Should American carriers be complaining to Google? The fact is, Google is simply mirroring what is true, or what they believe their search customers want to hear. I must admit that my most positive flying experiences were on non-U.S. carriers.

Trump’s gripe with Google is unenlightened to the point of silliness. It reminds me of the foolish news director at a TV station who wanted every other story to be positive. That might or might not get ratings, but it’s not how Google News or any news platform should work.

What Trump and those lug nuts in Congress don’t understand is that Google presents customized search results to each user, based on who they are and their past queries. If you like guns and have searched for gun-based information many times, your results on the search query “home protection” will likely deliver some information on guns. Whereas if I do the same search, Google will probably direct me to high tech home security systems.

It makes sense that Trump searching his name yields potently negative results. His keyboard dumps mostly hostile content online, so it makes sense that searching his own name yields highly negative results. Look at the graphic attached here on my Google search today (8-30-2018) and see how the Donald himself has affected the results. And tomorrow, that result will be different.

If someone did a HATE vs. LOVE survey on Donald Trump it would show that out of the more than 50% who do not like him, there is probably 20% who hate him. I’m sure Mr. President would have things to say about that.

The irony of my posting this on the internet is it will contribute in a small way to future Google search results. The only fake news here is that Donald Trump believes people searching the internet want to read only positive things about him. In Trumpworld, you are not to read newspapers, you are allowed to watch only certain TV channels, you must hate the NFL and you are expected to be more negative about America than positive. THESE ARE FACTS! What did Trump expect? HINT: google ”narcissism.”
