SELF-MEDICATED MANIAC

Trump’s Love Affair with Hydroxychloroquine

A snapping turtle on land is can be overly aggressive. When in the water, where it feels safer and less fearful, a snapping turtle tends to avoid a fight. People react to fear in different ways. When a person thinks they are immune to a germ or disease, they have the confidence to go anywhere, but common sense would dictate that they stay away from someone who is ill,. Donald Trump seems to be like the snapping turtle on land, holding on to one idea until long after the danger has been contained.

The problem of a global pandemic has not gone away. The fact that Trump must wait, like all of us, for a proven treatment or powerful vaccine makes him antsy beyond belief. On Monday (5-18-2020), the President of the United States said he has been taking hydroxychloroquine to prevent COVID-19, despite no compelling evidence that the drug is effective against the coronavirus. Even his own FDA (The US Food and Drug Administration) has warned against using hydroxychloroquine or a related compound, chloroquine, for treatment or prevention of COVID-19 unless under medical supervision in a hospital or as part of a clinical trial. So, the Donald is self-medicating. Now that may make some critics happy, but it’s extremely dangerous on two levels.

The first is the fact that the drug he’s taking could kill him. The Secret Service has the responsibility to keep the Commander-in-Chief safe and alive, but it’s unlikely we will ever see a Secret Service agent leap between the pill container and Trump’s mouth. With this little white pill, the president is putting himself in harm’s way. Let’s just look at the side effects: headaches, dizziness, ringing in the ears, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, loss of appetite, weight loss, mood changes, feeling nervous or irritable, skin rash or itching and hair loss! Does Donald Trump know that his hair could fall out?

There are more things that this drug can do to a human taking it, like, maculopathies and macular degeneration which can occur three months to several years after exposure to this drug and the symptoms may be irreversible. Oh my, Donald Trump doesn’t know chronic use of hydroxychloroquine can cause blindness if taken for long periods of time.

Ingesting this touted drug can cause cardiomyopathy, a disease which makes your heart have to work harder to pump blood through your body. Cardiomyopathy can lead to heart failure. Okay, does Trump know this? With his weight and verified heart condition, the President is taking a giant risk, but why? The drug that Trump is consuming can also produce mood swings. Great, just what we need, an over-medicated lunatic in the oval office.

My working theory on this hydroxychloroquine insanity connects to everything I have ever written about the man. He’s only interested in himself. Part of that myth, perhaps cultivated by an indulgent mother, is that he’s never wrong and he never apologizes. Again, that image of the snapping turtle holding on for dear death comes into view.

He came out early and touted hydroxychloroquine and kept using the expression, “What do you have to lose?” He never disclosed the expert or person who claimed taking this drug was is good idea. So, his expert is an “unnamed source.” Trump claimed that, “A lot of people are talking about this.” A lot of people talk about suicide, but that doesn’t mean anyone should try it. He keeps talking about the fact the drug has been around for 40 years, but it was never used for COVID-19 until now, because COVID has existed for maybe six months, at most.

If the President backed away from his claim, and listened to the experts around him, he would be admitting that HE MADE A MISTAKE, and he will never do that no matter the consequences, even his own death. That’s not brave, that’s stupid! If the autopsy showed that hydroxychloroquine caused the death, people would make up some conspiracy theory and set medical forensics back a hundred years.

Why would Donald Trump do something that could be detrimental to his very existence? Besides his truculent management style, his reaction to this pandemic has ruined the worldwide image of America. We have given up our medical leadership.

There was an opportunity to celebrate the big pharma news that some of their vaccine work was proving positive. The stock market went up 900 points on the small trial results, but by the end of day no one was talking about the vaccine progress. All the cable networks were quick to tell the story of Trump’s self-medication and how dangerous it was. The next day the terms “obesity” and “heart disease” were being used to describe the man in the White House. Great, so he’s self-medicating.

There are two aspects of this saga and both are totally disturbing. First, one might ask, is Trump really taking hydroxychloroquine or is this just some stunt to save face? If it is ever discovered that Trump never took hydroxychloroquine, or the doctor slipped him a placebo without his knowledge, the medical world will explode. What we have now is a deeply flawed President, with deeply loyal fans who might take hydroxychloroquine thinking it will prevent the virus. If they take it and bad things happen, who will these voters blame?

Trump continued to defend himself from self-medication by claiming the trials that were done on the drug where executed by anti-Trump people who wanted to discredit him. The most damaging study were the findings by Veteran’s Administration facilities. Trump barked, “If you look at the one survey, the only bad survey, they were giving it to people that were in very bad shape. They were very old. Almost dead!” He described the research as, “a Trump-enemy statement.” Remind me not to take medical advice from him when I am “almost dead.”

The next damning part of this is the fact that doctors lie so that Trump saves face. WHY? Doctors take an oath to give people the best possible advice so they can stay healthy and alive. The White House doctor in a late-night memo wrote that he and Trump discussed hydroxychloroquine and “concluded the potential benefit from treatment outweighed the relative risks.” The FDA has warned against use of the drug for COVID beyond hospitals & clinical trials, but that doesn’t keep a licensed doctor from giving his boss that drug? If the President dies, would Dr. Sean P. Conley, the White House physician, be arrested for murdering the President? Isn’t that what happened to Michael Jackson’s doctor?

When someone talks about “relative risks” of any activity the first thing you should ask is WHAT ARE THOSE RISKS? This love affair with a drug is not what it seems. This is just another demonstration of Trump’s love affair with himself.

He adores himself so greatly that he believes everything he does is right and good. What is good for the goose is good for the gander, I guess. The sauce that Trump wants us to pour on this global pandemic is doing more harm than good. In fact, his misconceptions and bad advice will kill more vulnerable Americans and might just be a mistake that promotes Mike Pence to a more important position in the administration.

Trump is not only a lunatic, but a drug addict. From his need for compliments to Diet Cokes and now, hydroxychloroquine, Trump doesn’t know how to be healthy. He’s 243+ pounds, has high cholesterol levels, heart disease, takes a drug to grow hair, wears an unresearched makeup every day, has a thick head and really doesn’t get much exercise. Most golfers ride carts as they play the sport. I wonder if Melania and Baron are strong enough to do an intervention and help him get off this drug. I’m not complaining, it’s just another stupid fact to add to my next Trump book. Hope it doesn’t hurt him.
