ELEVEN WHITE MEN

Trump’s Fork in the Road

There is something disconcertingly obvious about how history repeats itself. I never liked Clarence Thomas, not because he seemed to be an angry African-American back in 1991, but because he lied and his judgements are purely political. And now we have another up for a job-for-life on the Supreme Court who, on the surface, also appears to be a liar.

Whatever “deep-state” plan there was to appoint a very conservative black judge on the bench of the highest court back then, I care not. But what we witnessed almost 30 years ago at the Thomas senate hearing was a group of senators who verbally protected a man by second guessing a woman. Now you might say that what Clarence Thomas did was no more than run of the mill sexual harassment in that era. From time to time, however, Supreme Court judges must evaluate things from where they sit on the high court. Thomas should have never been elevated to the Supreme Court.

But the biggest embarrassment for America is the current president of the United States. Just look at this tweet from 9-21-2018, I have no doubt that, if the attack on Dr. Ford was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed with local Law Enforcement Authorities by either her or her loving parents. I ask that she bring those filings forward so that we can learn date, time, and place!” Donald J. Trump, if at any company in America, would be setting the firm up a major law suit for creating a hostile environment. All the president’s men and women quoted in Bob Woodward’s book are right. He’s a fucking moron.

Why no Republican women on the Senate committee? The eleven white male members of the Senate Judiciary Committee are, Chuck Grassley, Iowa, Chairman, Orrin Hatch, Utah, Lindsey Graham, South Carolina. John Cornyn, Texas, Mike Lee, Utah, Ted Cruz, Texas. Ben Sasse, Nebraska, Jeff Flake, Arizona, Mike Crapo, Idaho. Thom Tillis, North Carolina and John Kennedy, Louisiana.

I consider some of the men there nothing more than catheter bags and see no reason for them to be serving in Congress, let alone being on this committee. They are like what Trump would become if he could serve for life. O.M.G. Are you thinking “term-limits?”

Lindsey Graham has never been married, so I doubt he could judge anything about a relationship between a man and woman. Read into that whatever you want. Ted Cruz, Mike Lee and John Cornyn have their underwear so tightly twisted around their ideological excrement, I cannot believe anything they would decide would be good for all of America.

Jeff Flake and Ben Sasse seem to be reasonable people, but when given a little zap from the Republican cattle prod they both fall right into line. John Kennedy is a character with a deep-south downhome way of expressing himself, but don’t be fooled by his name. His blood runs red and he’s no Atticus Finch.

I have nothing against people getting old, but there must come a time when a person is too old to drive a car. Chuck Grassley, the chairperson of this committee, tries hard to keep things moving, but he’s 85 years old and nothing more than a tool of the good-ole boy network of the Senate. Then there’s Orrin Hatch, who is 84 and the longest-serving Republican Senator in U.S. history. It is my opinion that Grassley and Hatch should retire today at 12 noon and so we can get some Republican women on that committee.

When Orrin Hatch was asked about the accusations from a woman who says that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh attempted to rape her when they were teenagers, he showed his lack of clarity of thought. Hatch said the woman alleging assault when they were in high school must be “mistaken” and, even if the accusation is true, Kavanaugh is a “good man” and “senators should judge who he is now.” Orrin Hatch said that Christine Blasey Ford is “… mistaking something, but I don’t know, I mean, I don’t know her.”

Why would he even say that? In a court of law, he would be thrown off the jury. If he was a judge and made that comment, he would be forced to recuse himself. After he made that statement, why would he still have a vote in this matter? I will be disappointed if one of the Democrat women don’t ask for his recusal.

America has always been 50% female but they have had to scratch and claw their way to get respect. People like Sarah Palin have not helped the cause of women in politics. Anita Hill has. Are we going to believe women, or just have these eleven white men send our “women folk” back to the kitchen and stay-at-home status? We could use a few less penises on the Judiciary Committee.

Some men have moved on since 1991. Even Joe Bidden admits that, as chairman of the committee during the Anita Hill testimony, he was part of the problem. But you must gasp at the fact that Orrin Hatch is still one of the eleven angry men on the committee. What the hell are they angry about? Oh, yeah, it’s #MeToo.

It’s too late for Orrin Hatch. His only redeeming quality is that he was born in Pittsburgh, but then a lot of people can say that. He’s over the hill and half way down the drain. It won’t be too soon (January 3, 2019) until Utah puts Mitt Romney in that seat. At least we will then get a modern man with reasonable positions.

Back to the subject at hand. We will learn more next week about Brett Kavanaugh. Perhaps he will be able to lie better than he did about talking to Trump’s law firm and whether he used stolen memos when he worked for George W. Bush. Dr. Ford will have her day in court, and those eleven white men better behave or they could drive more suburban women to the polls in November.

I am sure we can count on the eleven white men to do the right thing despite the fact they have such a terrible role model in the REPUBLICAN President of the United States. Our Great Orange Leader doesn’t sleep in the same room as his spouse and he doesn’t use protection when having sex with porn stars. He seems more attracted to his daughter than his wife and, when confronted about alleged infidelity or sexual harassment, he simply denies it and walks away. His derriere is certainly bigger than his heart. Honesty is not a word you would ever use to describe Donald J. Trump. He’s merely a foolish man who built his house on lies.

When did America become so tainted by male chauvinism and old school male dominance? Oh yeah, when we elected a pig president. Oink! Oink!

THE JUDGE & THE JURY

Trump’s Nominee and the Court

We want our Supreme Court justices to be above reproach. We know that humans are flawed in many ways, but a person who sits in judgement of the most important decisions in the land needs to be honorable and fair.

For those of us who are old enough to remember Anita Hill and her agonizing testimony before an all-male panel of Senators, we know the result of that hearing gave us Clarence Thomas. In my opinion, Justice Thomas is a biased judge. But this isn’t just my opinion, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture left him out of their displays and mentioned Anita Hill’s bravery instead.

There are many in the black community who believe that some of the decisions and votes from Clarence Thomas actually turned back the clock for African-Americans in this country.  Judge Thomas’ wife, Virginia Thomas, is a well-known conservative and attorney who founded Liberty Consulting and the advocacy (lobbying) group Liberty Central. She is also a columnist for The Daily Caller and has previously worked at The Heritage Foundation. If you remember, Trump got his list of potential judges for the Supreme Court from this foundation. Virginia Thomas has more influence here than even the president.

Now we have a woman who has come forward to accuse Donald Trump’s nominee for the Supreme Court of sexual assault when he was a teenager. Just as we had with Justice Thomas, one woman could stand between him and his lifetime appointment to the court. Will this simply be another Anita Hill moment with nothing really changing, or will the #MeToo movement finally be able to block a nomination to the highest court?

One of the things the protectors of the president are asking is, “Why did this woman wait so long to bring this up?” They wonder out loud, “Why now?” It’s rather bewildering that those same people will watch TV shows about cold cases that are reopened and solved without asking that same question. Sure, technology, DNA and time have a way of bringing the truth to the surface in those shows, why not follow that same kind of logic in this real-life, critical discussion?

Brett Kavanaugh is probably not a serial rapist, but just writing those words could generate a key word connection on the internet. If reposted by enough people, the connection between the nominee’s name and that label could become a search result on Google. The jury is not only public opinion, but also the fuel for the mathematical algorithms working their magic on the search terms people use. We saw what the internet did to Rick Santorum. He is forever linked with “anal sex” when people search his last name.

I watched hours and hours of the Senate confirmation hearings and, objectively speaking, I found Kavanaugh to be quite knowledgeable about case law and the tradition of precedent. At the same time, I felt that he was much too political to be on the Supreme Court. He seemed to be pitching for the job, like a greasy whore politician. It’s what he couldn’t remember that bothered me most. And who spends $60,000 on baseball tickets?

In the past, we’ve put some far-right lunatics on the court. People of today’s generation may not remember the name Lewis F. Powell Jr., but this associate justice was appointed to the Supreme Court by Richard Nixon. He did more to help large corporations and rich people than any other justice. We wouldn’t have the Citizen’s United decision or the Hobby Lobby debacle without the road being paved by Justice Powell. If we could remove a few layers of decisions in the court, we would know the big print may giveth but the fine print taketh liberty away.

It’s likely going to be another wild week in Washington. Once again, Trump has created more fodder for the news networks with no greatness. He’s taken the memory of almost 3,000 dead souls in Puerto Rico and thrown them into the trash. He’s a womanizer and abuser of women’s rights and knows his base doesn’t care. The Great Orange Leader is only playing a character President. He’s not a real statesman.

Will the members of the Senate judiciary committee ignore the testimony of one woman from California? There are probably more secrets and lies in the thousands of memos that Brett Kavanaugh wrote while working for George W. Bush. That’s the reason Republicans don’t want people to see them. Hopefully this one woman will make them realize that they should look at everything this man has said and done in the past. Why the rush?

The good news is that anything which makes Donald Trump look bad will be dismissed. It might take the Donald a little longer to figure this one out, but in the end,  he will pluck another name from that long list of conservative judges provided by the Heritage Foundation. Like a novice at the track picking a horse, Trump will point to a name he likes and lay down another bet.

A person who could breeze right through the Senate would be Merrick Garland. He’s a good judge and an objective thinker but, unfortunately, he’s not on the sacred list. There is a reason that the people don’t get to vote on Supreme Court justices, I mean look what happened when they decided who should be president.

THE SAILOR & THE SINGER

Labor Day Message for America

Most people don’t work on Labor Day. There is a sense of irony this year in that it comes after a weekend of funerals, tributes and memorials. The holiday celebrates working people in America, and I am sure for many employers it’s the day before they expect the work force to come back and buckle down. This weekend will never be forgotten.

As our nation watched the services and memorials for Aretha Franklin and Senator John McCain, we looked at our past and thought about better times. You could cut the tension at times because it was obvious that these venues were used by some to stand their ground against a president who, like the child he is, was put in “time-out” for the weekend.

There was a sense of calm on the front pages in America. Thankfully, they were mostly Trump-free for a few days. After all, we honor our heroes, because they were captured. We celebrated the life of Aretha Franklin, not because she had the most soulful voice of any living diva, but because of the quality of her character. She was part of the civil rights movement, not with some grand entrance but always there in spirit and song. So, when the knucklehead in the White House said, “Aretha worked for me” the fists of African-American leaders clenched. They could not stand by and hear the tone of ownership coming from our Great Orange Leader’s little, round lips without the rebuke, “She didn’t work for you! She performed for you and she worked for us.”

John McCain’s passing doesn’t change who those people are in Washington, but somewhere in the middle of all the services, speeches and spectacles, we learned a little more about what it takes to be a “real man” in America today. What cut through the tears and sorrow was that it’s okay to apologize when you are wrong.

I also heard that caring for other people was a good thing, and that marginalizing any person or group in America is, quite frankly, un-American. What I also heard through the smiles and memories is that America has always been great.

The reason America has always been great is because of people like the Queen of Soul and The Maverick. They aren’t illusions, they are real. As we turn the page on another summer in America, let’s ask a few questions about who we are as a people.

Are we going to permit half-baked zealots and ideologs to steer our ship toward division and destruction? Isn’t there a way to listen to what the middle of the political spectrum wants and needs? Is there such a thing as a Progressive Republican or a Conservative Democrat? Shouldn’t 60% of America get to decide where we are going as a nation?

While we were burying our heroes, Donald Trump was busy playing golf. While America looked inside our souls to feel and heal, the leader of the free world offers us nothing but negativity, threats and fear. It must stop.

We cannot change Donald Trump, but we can change the person who is the presidency, after all it’s only an office and no man is above the law. Let’s get to work!

ONE MUST ASK THE QUESTION

Why Does the Donald Hate the Maverick?

When most people die, they are done talking. But when special people die, their legacy, laughter and legitimacy live on forever. John S McCain III, the Senator from Arizona, Navy war hero and statesmen is still talking and winning the argument, even after death. The McCain premise is simple. Be a politician and work as hard as possible to be honest. The gift of his six decades of service to his country sure makes a bone-spur seem silly.

No love is lost between John McCain and President Donald J. Trump. There is nothing but animosity, disdain and disrespect between them. McCain seems to have been the embodiment of all that Trump dislikes about America, and Trump, the demonic proof of all that is wrong with Washington and bad people in general.

The lack of respect that our president has shown John McCain earned him an outright decree from true patriot McCain himself, that the President not be part of his funeral services. You see, Trump cannot control a dead man’s wishes.

On Sunday (8-26-2018), the flag above the White House flew at half-staff to honor our true American treasure. However, on Monday morning the flag was back up full staff. President Trump hasn’t issued a presidential proclamation with an order to lower the flags. In tradition and law, the flag can be lowered in honor by presidential proclamation, as was done over five days for Senator Teddy Kennedy. The lack of comment or action from the President about John McCain demonstrates our Great Orange Leader’s pettiness and lack of care for American values. He might as well just spit in the face of every serving member of the Armed Forces.

Perhaps Trump is wishing that all the TV channels will stop talking about John McCain and get back to covering him. One newspaper commented that the outpouring was closer to what a former president would receive than a five-term Senator. Trump’s departure from this earth will not net this kind of homage. McCain’s back story shows a lot of what Trump isn’t, and that obviously bothers our frail, little-baby president.

Trump doesn’t respect truth and honesty. Decency is viewed by the Donald as a weakness that must be cured. Like a poison that flows through his veins, the lack of apologizing for misspeaking or a bad decision is an embarrassing weakness, not a virtue. His accuracy must be rubbed out as soon as possible.

When candidate Trump said that John McCain wasn’t a war hero because he was captured, that was a joke that got noticed. Once made, Donald Trump could not pull that statement back into his tiny, damaged brain. He thinks everything he says gets etched into stone as the truth. There lies the link between Trump and pre-historic Neanderthal man. He would rather disappoint decent people than admit he was trying to be funny or wrong.

When you ask the question why a sitting president would act like this, perhaps we should also look at the Justice Department policy that says a sitting president cannot be indicted. Maybe we need to update our laws and policies based on the president we have rather than the president we deserve. Why not indict Donald Trump?

Trump’s treatment of John McCain, in contrast to the way he treats the President of Russia, is eye-opening on so many levels. Trump is not critical of Putin because Putin is not critical of Trump. Trump honors any tyrant, dictator or murderer who says complimentary things about him more than someone who fought for his own country. That country, of course, is the U.S.A. Does that not make Trump a traitor?

This stubborn attitude and unwillingness to be a real man and at least say nice things about the dearly departed makes Trump no better than the drunk on the corner. He can only hope his organs can process all the vile and hate pouring out of his broken, spineless form. He’s not my president.

Let me summarize it this way. Donald J. Trump, the 45th President of the United States of America, is jealous of John McCain III. Perhaps the president, with all his endorsements and claim of some evangelical mandate, should read the Holy Bible to find out how to handle this one. I would recommend John 3:14, “But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.”

I cannot deny the truth. Trump is a worthless, lousy piece of shit.

#UnIndictedCoConspirator

Trump Loyalty vs. Real Loyalty

Not only did Donald Trump have a bad day yesterday (8-21-2018), but America had a terrible day as we learned of corruption at the top. We are now faced with the task of repairing the republic.

On these pages we have previously pondered the possibility that someone like Donald Trump might take actions leading to a Constitutional crisis. Well we may have one soon.

There is a notion and policy in the Justice Department that a sitting president cannot be indicted. We aren’t sure if this was what the framers of the Constitution had in mind, but both Republican and Democratic lawyers have used it as a guideline over the years. What some will point out is not what is said, but rather what is written in this case.

In Section 4: Impeachment: The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors. The President, Vice-President, Cabinet Secretaries, and other executive officers, as well as judges, may be impeached by the House of Representatives and tried in the Senate.

Any official convicted by the Senate would be immediately removed from office. The Senate could also choose to bar the removed official from holding any federal office in the future. No other punishments may be inflicted, pursuant to the impeachment proceeding, but the convicted party remains liable to trial and punishment in the courts for civil and criminal charges. If Donald Trump was not the President right now, he would have been named a coconspirator in the crimes of Michael Cohen.

So, the notion is that, while in office, these people shall be judged by Congress and could be impeached. Once out of office, the courts can have at them. A president can be charged, according to the Constitution, if they commit treason, take bribes or commit other “high Crimes and Misdemeanors.” The capitalizations are from the founders.

Garrett Epps in The Atlantic magazine in 2018 wrote a great article called, The Only Way to Find Out If the President Can Be Indicted: Scholars disagree on existing precedents—and the question won’t be settled until evidence leads a prosecutor to try it. In that article, he points out “that the Constitution suggest that the president is subject to laws like any citizen, but never discusses prosecution in office.”

In 1973, the then-Solicitor General Robert Bork, wrote an opinion that a Vice President should not have the same protections against prosecution while in office that a president would have, but that was just an opinion, not law. Also, the article reminds us that a 1998 opinion, written by a lawyer in Kenneth Starr’s Office of the Independent Counsel investigating President Bill Clinton, clearly stated that a sitting president could be indicted. Of course, he was trying to lock up Clinton for lying under oath about affairs.

Only the Best People?

Yesterday in court, we had President Donald J. Trump being accused in the pleading and allocution of Michael Cohen that candidate and client, Donald Trump “directed him” to commit election fraud. Cohen testified under oath and said that he knew it was against the law. That would mean that citizen Donald Trump is an Unindicted Coconspirator in a felony. This is a federal crime.

Epps’ article points out, [Bork’s] memo considers the Constitution’s text and finds no answer. It says, correctly, that there is no “airtight separation of powers, but rather … a system of checks and balances, or blending the three powers.”

And there is this famous line from then Vice President Gerald Ford, “Impeachment is whatever the Senate says it is.” Remember that Nixon was told to resign from office by his party leaders, long before Congress got to the destructive action of impeachment. Barry Goldwater and other Republicans at the time knew that if a trial took place Nixon would have been the first president to be removed from office.

Even more troubling, if a president has committed “high Crimes and Misdemeanors” and ends up on the outside, the new president could easily pardon him. It happened with Gerald Ford pardoning Richard Nixon. Pence would likely do the same thing with Trump. Why? It’s been said that it would look bad if a former leader of the free world wasn’t free. Huh? We don’t want to look bad? When did the judicial system ever worry about how we look?

Donald Trump wanted to disrupt Washington and the whole of government. All he has done is waste a lot of time on things that don’t matter. He may have pulled the U.S.A. out of a bunch of treaties and agreements, but he hasn’t made better deals. Trump has gotten everyone’s attention in the world on trade, but with no short or long term guarantees that he has done more good, than damage. Trump has moved the Republican party to the far-white-right, but few are complaining in the G.O.P. Were they racists and isolationists all along? Do they care more about re-election than they do about America?

People must decide if they will be loyal to Trump or loyal to our country. Do we uphold the laws of the land, or do we choose to look the other way? It’s time for us to indict a sitting president and see where that goes. If the Supreme Court reasons that the founders and the Constitution say that impeachment is the only way to deal with a crime committed by a president, then let’s impeach the bastard. But if the Congress and the Supreme Court say that a sitting President is above the law, then it’s time to change the laws. Trump is a self-serving anarchistic pea brain with absolutely no redeeming qualities.

The more we learn the worse it gets. Let’s unite this country now and throw Trump out of office.

DONALD TRUMP IS A TRAITOR

Putin Over-Powers Another President

When Donald Trump ran for president, he painted everyone who had come before him as weak and ineffective. And some of the people in this country voted for him, believing his rhetoric that he was a tough guy and a great deal maker. We’re not getting a do-over on this one.

If the last 18 months have shown me anything, it is that Trump is a horrible negotiator and unbelievably sheepish when he is face to face with anyone of power. He was critical of the sitting Prime Minister of Great Britain in a newspaper interview, but denied he said anything negative when standing next to Theresa May. Once again, he called it fake news, which is his go-to line once caught in a lie. The tape recording of the interview that Trump referenced in his denial showed that the reporting was exactly what he said. After all, the newspaper was The Sun, owned by the same person who owns Fox News. Maybe there is something mentally wrong with the 45th President.

So, Trump and Putin had a press conference after their short four-hour discussion today (7-16-2018), and Trump disappointed and embarrassed America stepping into so much crap. It would have been better if he left his shoes and the asshole standing in them in Finland.

Fox News said that the Donald seemed weak and unprepared when he was standing with Putin in Helsinki, Finland. Even Paul Ryan, the Republican Speaker of the House of the United States spoke out, “There is no question that Russia interfered in our election and continues attempts to undermine democracy here and around the world. That is not just the finding of the American intelligence community but also the House Committee on Intelligence. The president must appreciate that Russia is not our ally. There is no moral equivalence between the United States and Russia, which remains hostile to our most basic values and ideals. The United States must be focused on holding Russia accountable and putting an end to its vile attacks on democracy.”

So what do we do now, America? We have a puppet president who is intimidated by strong men to such a degree that he makes unAmerican statements and actions which could harm our nation. Donald J. Trump has sided with Putin and Russia and believes that his own intelligence community cannot be trusted. Our president seems to be more worried about Russia selling gas and oil to Germany than the fact that Russia attempted to disrupt our democracy by meddling in our election.

Not surprisingly, Senator John McCain also rebuked the President after he witnessed Trump’s presentation “Today’s press conference in Helsinki was one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory. The damage inflicted by President Trump’s naiveté, egotism, false equivalence, and sympathy for autocrats is difficult to calculate. But it is clear that the summit in Helsinki was a tragic mistake.

President Trump proved not only unable, but unwilling to stand up to Putin. He and Putin seemed to be speaking from the same script as the president made a conscious choice to defend a tyrant against the fair questions of a free press, and to grant Putin an uncontested platform to spew propaganda and lies to the world.

It is tempting to describe the press conference as a pathetic rout – as an illustration of the perils of under-preparation and inexperience. But these were not the errant tweets of a novice politician. These were the deliberate choices of a president who seems determined to realize his delusions of a warm relationship with Putin’s regime without any regard for the true nature of his rule, his violent disregard for the sovereignty of his neighbors, his complicity in the slaughter of the Syrian people, his violation of international treaties, and his assault on democratic institutions throughout the world.

Coming close on the heels of President Trump’s bombastic and erratic conduct towards our closest friends and allies in Brussels and Britain, today’s press conference marks a recent low point in the history of the American Presidency. That the president was attended in Helsinki by a team of competent and patriotic advisors makes his blunders and capitulations all the more painful and inexplicable.

No prior president has ever abased himself more abjectly before a tyrant. Not only did President Trump fail to speak the truth about an adversary; but speaking for America to the world, our president failed to defend all that makes us who we are—a republic of free people dedicated to the cause of liberty at home and abroad. American presidents must be the champions of that cause if it is to succeed. Americans are waiting and hoping for President Trump to embrace that sacred responsibility. One can only hope they are not waiting totally in vain.” GOD BLESS JOHN MCCAIN.

During the Helsinki press conference, Putin gave Trump a ceremonial soccer ball from the recently concluded World Cup in Moscow. South Carolina Republican Lyndsey Graham showed his thinking and sense of humor by saying, “Meddling & collusion are NOT the same thing. Russia did meddle in 2016 election & are trying it again. I’ve seen no evidence of collusion, plenty evidence of Russian meddling. Russia didn’t beat Clinton. Trump beat Clinton. Bad day for the US. Can be fixed. Must be fixed. Finally, if it were me, I’d check the soccer ball for listening devices and never allow it in the White House.”

The only way to right this ship is for Congress to remove Trump’s power over foreign policy. If the Republicans cannot rein him in, then America should vote more Democrats into office to balance this insanity. And if things get worse, we should not be so shy about advancing a discussion about impeachment. It is clear that Donald J. Trump is unfit to be President of the United States.

No Soup for You, Sarah Sanders

The lyrics of 1971’s “American Pie,” Don McLean’s complex and mysterious song which laments the day that rock ‘n’ roll died, asks us to unravel the history of music and faith. It’s a bitter bite of nostalgia. Various forms of the word “die” are heard almost twenty times. Somewhere in those long, haunting lyrics, McLean makes us realize that things from our youth die just about every day. We now have one more piece of that pie sitting on our plates, the death of Democracy. Will we have to swallow it?

The 116th episode of the TV sitcom Seinfeld which first aired in 1995 introduced the “The Soup Nazi.” That show has been played in what feels like a million times in reruns. The character, Yev Kassem was called a “Nazi” because of the aggressive and excessively strict regimentation he demanded from his customers. In the classic scene, George asks for bread with his soup claiming that everyone else in line got free bread. When George presses his point, the “Soup Nazi” yells “No soup for you!” and the woman at the cash register snatches George’s soup from his hand and returns his money.

Once again, the Supreme Court has set us up. They ruled that a Colorado cake maker, based on his religious convictions, could deny baking a wedding cake for a gay couple. They attempted to soften the blow of their discrimination with language so narrow it practically applied to that one incident only. Today we learned that the Supreme Court wiped away an opinion against a florist who declined to make flower arrangements for a same-sex couple’s marriage. They sent that case back to the lower court, asking them to revisit the suit using their decision on the cake maker as a guide.

When Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen stupidly decided to go to a Mexican restaurant after separating families at the Mexican border, she was shouted out of the establishment by protesters. The refrain, “Shame! Shame! Shame!” was too much for Ms. Nielsen, and she wisely left the restaurant.

This weekend, another restaurant owner took things into his own hands and asked Sarah Huckabee Sanders and her family to leave his restaurant in Lexington, Virginia, simply because she works for Donald Trump.

America is now going to use our freedom of speech and convictions to block people from commercial services. It’s not Sarah Sanders they were asking to leave that restaurant, rather they were asking Donald Trump to leave the White House. If Trump uses Twitter to mass distribute his beliefs and conspiracies, the only way to cut through and get our message out is to take radical steps. Hateful as it may seem to some, the President’s strident use of hate demands an equally loud voice.

Of course, President Trump had to defend his Press Secretary on Twitter, “The Red Hen Restaurant should focus more on cleaning its filthy canopies, doors and windows (badly needs a paint job) rather than refusing to serve a fine person like Sarah Huckabee Sanders. I always had a rule, if a restaurant is dirty on the outside, it is dirty on the inside!”

So, this is how it goes. The President of the United States can defame and attempt to shame a restaurant because they were doing the same thing as the florist and the cake maker. He can’t handle discrimination when it happens to him.

Experts say a person can’t sue a sitting president for defamation. Is that true? Isn’t this where we’re headed? You see, with this Great Orange Leader, the Supreme Court will have to decide how much power the Chief Executive has in America. They cannot fail on this issue.

If they give him more power, we are doomed as a nation. All the Trump lovers could have to deal with the next president being worse than Donald. Or is this all just a set up to have one of his inner circle (Daughter or Son-in-Law) take the office when he is too weak to sit on the potty each morning, tweeting his vitriol and hate. Is there an adult diaper big enough to catch all the horseshit that comes out of this angry, fat, old man?

Congress, especially the Republicans, are lost. The Supreme Court is teetering on the brink of conservative nonsense and the President is losing his marbles. I’ve never said this before, but I sure hope that we have some military patriots who will protect the Constitution if need be.

That’s it folks. Sarah Sanders can’t complain about being turned away from the Red Hen because she is complicit in the remaking of an America which mirrors the values taught by her foolish father, Mike. His tweet this weekend, backing up Trump’s lie about Democrats supporting Mexican gangs, is exactly what is wrong with America. Both Sarah and Mike should probably lay off the pie and focus on the Bible. I believe somewhere in that book is the inference that lying is a sin and taking babies away from their mothers and fathers will not help during the final hours. Look it up.

TWO WARS AT ONCE

Trump – Comey – Trump – Assad

There are times in every presidential administration when someone writes a book that is critical of the present occupant of the White House. We now have two books, Michael Wolff’s Fire and Fury and James Comey’s A Higher Loyalty. Both of them are direct hit jobs on President Donald J. Trump and the way he does business in Washington.

As President Trump was trying to decide what to do about HIS red line in Syria, the talking heads on TV were reading excerpts from the leaked Comey book. How fitting.

What has happened here is that the clearer, more informed minds of our Generals and Commanders in the field have temporary talked Trump off the ledge of war.

An important aspect of the Syrian conflict is the teaching moment it presents to our naïve and misinformed leader. The stakes involve a decision to go face to face with Russia and Trump appears to have blinked. We may never know if Trump used a communication channel to the Kremlin to find out how serious Putin was with his warnings, but the net result is that Trump can use Nikki Haley to work some magic at the United Nations to get the support of other nations.

We already have buy-in from the U.K. and France, but what about bringing Assad to the world court and charging him with war crimes? Why not figure out a way to get him out of control? Oh, that’s right, those are the same things Obama did and all he accomplished was a promise from Russia that the chemical weapons would be destroyed. That didn’t work. And when Trump was so emotionally overtaken by pictures of kids who were poisoned by Bashar al-Assad, he wasted 59 tomahawk missiles scorching an airfield that was up and running again in a few days. That didn’t’ work.

What the Donald is finding out is that all the things he thought he could fix with his big, round mouth are more difficult than he ever imagined. In fact, they are just as tricky as they were for Obama, two Bushes and Bill Clinton. While all this is going on, James Comey’s book is about to drop and the sound it will make will surely drive this ego-maniac more insane.

Comey could be painted as a just another fired, disgruntled employee arguing his case to the world, but what his book will do to this administration could be harmful to our country. While Trump and his team should be focusing on the Middle East, they will be diverted into a war posture against Comey, which they will expand to include the slandering and defiling Robert Mueller. Word on the street is that the RNC, a political party, will buy ads to discredit the investigation into Russian meddling in our election.

Chemical weapons are against the law, so is torturing a captured enemy, but that didn’t stop Dick Cheney and his neo-con war machine. It would be highly unlikely that anyone in the World Court would be convinced that America was a creditable witness to these high crimes and misdemeanors, but you still have that red line that both Obama and Trump painted in the sand. If the Armed Forces of the United States were thrown into a conflict in Syria, Trump’s premise that we wasted money and got nothing in Iraq and Afghanistan goes out the window.

There was a window of opportunity for Trump to maintain America’s leadership role in the world, but that has closed. When Turkey, Russia and Iran met to divide Syria, two messages became clear. First, the U.S. was not at the table, meaning we didn’t care. Second, we didn’t care about Assad’s thoughts. Putin wants a warm-water port and Iran wants to force Syria into their version of Islam. The supreme leader, Ali Khamenei of Iran, has a goal of maintaining religious and political power over Syria, no matter who the leader might be.

All this is way over Donald Trump’s head.  He doesn’t get the nuances and intricacies of the Middle East. He jobbed out that responsibility to Jared Kushner, who has remained invisible and silent through this and most other matters. What does this person do and why is he there?

Trump has been handed a Rubik’s cube which has been tortuously turned and worked by previous administrations. There are no secret codes, no money that can be paid to release us from this quagmire. Even if we were to remove Assad from power, there is no plan for handling the resulting vacuum. If the RNC spends millions to discredit the Special Counsel, the investigation will at least show that James Comey’s observations are more credible than false.

But the President has his bully-pulpit, a.k.a. Twitter, and he soon responded to his very own personal war, “James Comey is a proven LEAKER & LIAR. Virtually everyone in Washington thought he should be fired for the terrible job he did-until he was, in fact, fired. He leaked CLASSIFIED information, for which he should be prosecuted. He lied to Congress under OATH. He is a weak and untruthful slime ball who was, as time has proven, a terrible Director of the FBI. His handling of the Crooked Hillary Clinton case, and the events surrounding it, will go down as one of the worst “botch jobs” of history. It was my great honor to fire James Comey!” TRUMP ONLY CARES ABOUT HOW HE’S VIEWED, NOT WHAT IS RIGHT.

The on-the-job training of our Great Orange Leader is utterly tiresome and unproductive. If only someone would step up and take the wheel of this runaway train. Why do we have to wait four years? We don’t need to be fighting more wars. It’s time we give peace and order a chance.

THE LIAR AND THE LAMB

The Trouble with a Trump Endorsement

What the Democrats in Western Pennsylvania might have learned with Conor Lamb’s performance in the special election in his state’s 18th Congressional District is that moderation can trump Trump’s bullshit. But will the Dems be able to resist the gravitational pull to the left?

What the Republicans just might realize is that Donald Trump’s currency ain’t what it used to be. In short, having Trump stump for you could be a grand liability. What the Donald fails to understand is that he sells only himself and his schtick. He doesn’t focus on why people should vote for someone else. The other lesson is the evergreen observation that all elections are local. But can the RNC resist the forces trying to reposition them to the far right? The N.R.A. is just one of them.

The voters in Alabama decided to elect someone they thought was the better candidate for the Senate. In fact, the Democrat Doug Jones was endorsed by the sitting Republican Senator. Trump first pushed Luther Strange, who lost, then doubled-down against Roy Moore’s accusers and that endorsement proved toxic. Isn’t Trump supposed to be a winner?

The Donald’s long self-aggrandizement rally speech in Moon Township, PA last Saturday night might have made him happy, but it did little for the Republican candidate, Rick Saccone. In fact, Trump would have been wise not to go to the 18th District in Pennsylvania. Western Pennsylvania may still support Donald Trump as President, but they are not sure they can trust his judgement about people running for office.

I was struck by a comment from a retired pharmacist in Pittsburgh who said she voted for Trump but would vote for Lamb. She said clearly that the chaos in the White House made her nervous. She said, “Why, he fired someone today, right?” And this is something that Donald Trump, a “stable genius,” can’t figure out.

On the day people in Pa were going to the polls, all the headlines were about Trump firing Rex Tillerson, his Secretary of State. When we learned that the President did the firing on Twitter, it made him seem unstable and sent a message of unsteadiness and uncertainty through the electorate. He screwed the party by throwing a flare of doubt on election day. A smart politician would have waited to shake the trees around him until after the election, but this president is not smart. The apple fell from the tree and hit him on his big orange head.

Another stupid move was sending Don Jr. into a chocolate factory to “help” Rick Saccone. Don Jr. is notorious for opening his mouth and putting both feet in there, and the optics of Don Jr. in a hair net didn’t really work for the hard-core industrial and agricultural Pennsylvanians.

Back to the maxim that all elections are local, Conor Lamb was a great candidate and will have to prove it again in November. Remember, this was a special election to fill the seat of a shamed Republican forced to resign. The congressional district that was used last night will be redrawn for future elections, and there is a good chance Lamb won’t even face off against Saccone again. They could be in different districts in the Fall.

As someone who grew up in that area, the gerrymandered district that was used for this election makes no sense at all. You have people in the South Hills’ suburbs that share more with people north of the line, than with those in downstate Greene County. The original purpose of this district shape was to control the number of Democrats and their effect on elections. Not very American.

Donald Trump benefited from the gerrymandering and by Russian dirty tricks during the campaign. These have soiled our electoral process. Donald Trump may think he still has his small little hands around the necks of those districts where he won, but things are changing.

No one got rich, except the people who are already rich. No one got the big raise, which Trump promised would come. The coal mining companies aren’t hiring thousands of workers, as the candidate promised. Plants like Carrier and Harley-Davidson still moved some production out of the country. People continue to be laid off and there aren’t enough lies that can alter reality.

Lies and bravado are not as convincing as plain talk from a calm and moderate voice. We can learn a lot from Conor Lamb and the way he ran his campaign. He didn’t waste his time trying to take a wrecking ball to Donald Trump. He simply admitted how popular he is. He didn’t need to pledge loyalty to Nancy Pelosi, who apparently is damaged goods in American politics. Why does a political party keep electing a Speaker of the House who isn’t don’t liked by both parties?

Trump will try to fire his way out of the mess he has created. Like an animal who finds himself in quicksand, if the Donald just stood still he might have a chance. But he will keep changing and moving, thinking that he, and he alone, can make himself popular — all the while sinking lower and lower as the Democratic lambs watch.

WHO’S THE MORON NOW?

President Trump Fires Rex Tillerson

When Donald Trump was confronted by the press about the chaos in the White House, he pushed back and said, “Everybody wants to work at the White House,” and explained that he likes chaos. It wasn’t that long ago (last October) that the Donald chided Tillerson for his desire to create a dialog with North Korea with his tweet: “I told Rex Tillerson, our wonderful Secretary of State, that he is wasting his time trying to negotiate with Little Rocket Man…” But now, Trump jumps to get the meeting with the brutal dictator he maligned.

And like the chicken shit President Trump is, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was fired by phone and then again by tweet today 3-13-18: “Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State. He will do a fantastic job! Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service! Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the CIA, and the first woman so chosen. Congratulations to all!” It’s clear that Donald Trump doesn’t care about human feelings.

Perhaps Rex, as some reporting has suggested, was Vladimir Putin’s choice for Secretary of State because he had previously done business with Russia. Perhaps that story worried our great Orange Leader. Or maybe Trump is all pumped up by his cronies’ pronouncement from the House Intelligence Committee of “No Collusion.” Maybe the Donald was more confident today and just had to fire someone.

Was Rex too outspoken and honest for Mr. Trump? It just might be that Rex was suited only for business and not for the task of international affairs and foreign policy. This is just another argument that soils the notion that “great” business people in government are better than experienced political operatives.

Rather than focus on the imaginary “reasoning” of a person like Trump, we need to observe how all this turnover looks to the whole world; it’s bad. Trump is impossible to work for and that is why all his employees and lovers are forced to sign non-disclosure agreements. His legal eagles build barriers around this man trying to keep him safe and aboveboard. Trump doesn’t fit the mold of a presidential person, whether in government or a public company, so why do we expect him to follow the rules?

While his legal team is distracted by Stormy Daniels and her desire to tell her story about an immoral affair 12 years ago with then citizen Trump, the special counsel continues his quest to find out how Trump has operated in business, campaign and life. The House Republicans may have thrown Trump a PR bone with their FAKE vindication announcement, and the Democrats, because of their minority status, can do little except conduct more interviews. The House investigation into Russian meddling has been nothing but a joke. Politicians cannot be open and honest and good judges in these matters.

It’s rather ironic that Trump’s firing of Tillerson eclipsed this Republican stunt. This administration has so much dirty laundry, and the news cycle moves quickly, so it won’t be long before we find out who broke the law and when. And then, those same House Republicans will have to decide whether they are loyal to country or party. Few have the backbone to deal with the truth.

If Trump cannot work with someone, there is no need for the taxpayers to pay them. Trump continues to believe that he, and only he, can fix all the ills in the world. If you work for him, you know that you must make him feel good or get out of his way. Those who kiss his ass seem to have his ear. What a childish person we have as the chief executive of such a great country. Trump is dangerous to himself, which means he’s treacherous for America.

As Trump shuffles the players around, we should NOT feel that any of this will spell stability in this government. Donald J. Trump will fire more people because he has bought into his TV persona that firing people moves the story forward. He’s using more Mark Burnett (the producer of The Apprentice) methods than any schooled political science procedures. Trump is an anti-logic, anti-science and anti-human resource kind of guy. If he was the head of a public company, he would be under deep investigation for this kind of turnover. Let’s remember that everyone in the constantly updated “you’re fired” picture were people HE HIRED. His judgement must be questioned.

There is no evidence that this will ever end. There is no reason to believe this is good for America. When he finally breaks the country, who will put it all back together again?
