THE COLD WINTER OF WAR

The Real Dangers of the Donald

The irony of the statement candidate Trump made on the campaign trail was that we should not elect Hillary Clinton because she would surely get us into war. Now, as Donald Trump makes his emboldened moves toward shaping the government in his very image, we are much closer to what he described in his imagination.

When Trump began his reality TV presidency, there were many people who didn’t take him seriously. There were some who were amused that a man who ran a reality TV game show and rouge businesses could make a difference. Without knowing that this philandering hypocrite would carry out most of what he said he would do points to another irony. We are so intellectually numb from most politicians not achieving their promises, we assumed that Trump would moderate once he became President. Wrong.

While TV wails away with a porn star, a Playboy bunny and a singer, we can’t find the punchline for what appears to be the setup of a joke. Donald Trump’s loyal followers, the Orange Cult, will not be thrown from the train over these detailed descriptions of Hollywood bungalows and liaisons with unprotected sex. Is there not a point when the men of God who believe in Trump will be tested? When did infidelity get a pass with diehard Christians? What do Mike and Karen Pence think of the President now?

Meanwhile, more important issues have gotten swept under the carpet due to all the noise from all the charges. Trump lost his lead attorney and he fired his National Security Advisor, General H.R. McMasters. And, in case you didn’t notice, he signed retaliatory tariffs against China. There is a certain coverage fatigue here that works well within the news cycle, but for the busy American the changes are coming too fast to comprehend.

First, let’s talk about trade. Donald Trump promised that we would win so much we would be tired of winning. He kept talking about how good the stock market has done since he became President. In a sense, he sold America the notion of getting rich. To this writer, however, it appears that our Great Orange Leader is simply “getting even” with countries he claims have been screwing America.

The method here is primal. Make the Mexicans, the Chinese and the Iranians the bad guys and ignore the threat of Russian interference in our elections. Is Donald Trump afraid of Russia or something that Russia knows about him? While we slept, Trump remodeled foreign policy and built trade walls, pushing us closer to wars of two kinds.

While Trump’s lawyers are focusing on silencing the porn star, the bunny and the singer, the changes within our government are remarkable. The Donald is clearly tired of listening to the military logic of “his generals” and is now replacing them with people who agree with his deep confusion. He is a guy who believes his own shit doesn’t stink. He watches Fox News and hires those of their talking heads he enjoys hearing. In a way, Fox News is controlling the president. This is frightening.

His new economic adviser is a recent Fox contributor. When the headline screams, Larry Kudlow: TV pundit to replace Gary Cohn as Trump’s top economic adviser (Guardian) we should all worry. When the President of the United States feels more comfortable with pundits than experts, we are doomed to life in a bubble with no escape. Sucking on the Fox feedback loop is the most threatening thing a president could do.

With the appointment of John Bolton as the new National Security Advisor, Trump has once again moved toward an ultra-conservative, pro-military action figure who thinks that America’s mandate is nation changing. This might seem out of sync with Trump’s critical views of the military efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, but Trump has slowly removed people who were there to talk him out of war. Bolton’s final solution for Iran and North Korea involves bombs and boots on the ground. Trump joked that he made Bolton promise him that he wouldn’t get us into war. Did he actually have to say that? WTF!

Holding China’s hand to the fire on trade might warm the hearts of the hardcore Trumpettes, but will inevitably start a NO-WIN trade war that will suck dollars out of the wallets and purses of the people who put Trump in office. China has already announced that they will strike back with $3 billion tariffs on 128 US products which include wine, fresh fruit, dried fruit and nuts, steel pipes, ethanol and, believe it or not, ginseng.

All this is happening before Trump turns his head toward the EU and the NAFTA agreements. He might get even with the countries where some of his own products are made, but he doesn’t understand the gravity of his actions and their effect on our economy. Trump’s short terms goals conflict with the stock market.

While Donald Trump checked off another campaign promise, we saw our 401(k)s diminish. Is he really helping us, or is he just another blowhard who has the power to enact his fantasies and try out his half-baked opinions? It could be that he will erase all the gains we have made so far. He is a destructive whore who wants to screw other countries just as much as he wants to screw every woman he sees.

Under oath, we will eventually learn more about our President, but much of the damage will have already happened. In May, John Bolton will urge Trump to tear up the Iran Nuclear deal. Then Iran will be able to move forward with creating a nuclear weapon store, putting them in the same league as North Korea. This will pit the US against our allies in Europe and create another crisis in the Middle East.

Trump is mentally incapable of understanding all of this. He now believes that his twitter attacks brought Kim-Jong Un to the bargaining table, totally disregarding the efforts made by South Korea. In fact, this will be a three-way meeting with the South, the North and the President. He will not be able to take full credit and that will piss him off. With John Bolton in the drivers’ seat, I wonder if the meeting will ever take place. Google some of the things Bolton has said about North Korea and you will see.

Even as spring comes to America, it remains a cold winter. A trade war might not be understood by Americans until they start to run out of money. A real war will be grasped when our sons and daughters are sent into harm’s way, again. The citizens of this great nation will come to see that the man behind the curtain lied to us. Only then we might start to ask, why did we elect a liar?

THE LIAR AND THE LAMB

The Trouble with a Trump Endorsement

What the Democrats in Western Pennsylvania might have learned with Conor Lamb’s performance in the special election in his state’s 18th Congressional District is that moderation can trump Trump’s bullshit. But will the Dems be able to resist the gravitational pull to the left?

What the Republicans just might realize is that Donald Trump’s currency ain’t what it used to be. In short, having Trump stump for you could be a grand liability. What the Donald fails to understand is that he sells only himself and his schtick. He doesn’t focus on why people should vote for someone else. The other lesson is the evergreen observation that all elections are local. But can the RNC resist the forces trying to reposition them to the far right? The N.R.A. is just one of them.

The voters in Alabama decided to elect someone they thought was the better candidate for the Senate. In fact, the Democrat Doug Jones was endorsed by the sitting Republican Senator. Trump first pushed Luther Strange, who lost, then doubled-down against Roy Moore’s accusers and that endorsement proved toxic. Isn’t Trump supposed to be a winner?

The Donald’s long self-aggrandizement rally speech in Moon Township, PA last Saturday night might have made him happy, but it did little for the Republican candidate, Rick Saccone. In fact, Trump would have been wise not to go to the 18th District in Pennsylvania. Western Pennsylvania may still support Donald Trump as President, but they are not sure they can trust his judgement about people running for office.

I was struck by a comment from a retired pharmacist in Pittsburgh who said she voted for Trump but would vote for Lamb. She said clearly that the chaos in the White House made her nervous. She said, “Why, he fired someone today, right?” And this is something that Donald Trump, a “stable genius,” can’t figure out.

On the day people in Pa were going to the polls, all the headlines were about Trump firing Rex Tillerson, his Secretary of State. When we learned that the President did the firing on Twitter, it made him seem unstable and sent a message of unsteadiness and uncertainty through the electorate. He screwed the party by throwing a flare of doubt on election day. A smart politician would have waited to shake the trees around him until after the election, but this president is not smart. The apple fell from the tree and hit him on his big orange head.

Another stupid move was sending Don Jr. into a chocolate factory to “help” Rick Saccone. Don Jr. is notorious for opening his mouth and putting both feet in there, and the optics of Don Jr. in a hair net didn’t really work for the hard-core industrial and agricultural Pennsylvanians.

Back to the maxim that all elections are local, Conor Lamb was a great candidate and will have to prove it again in November. Remember, this was a special election to fill the seat of a shamed Republican forced to resign. The congressional district that was used last night will be redrawn for future elections, and there is a good chance Lamb won’t even face off against Saccone again. They could be in different districts in the Fall.

As someone who grew up in that area, the gerrymandered district that was used for this election makes no sense at all. You have people in the South Hills’ suburbs that share more with people north of the line, than with those in downstate Greene County. The original purpose of this district shape was to control the number of Democrats and their effect on elections. Not very American.

Donald Trump benefited from the gerrymandering and by Russian dirty tricks during the campaign. These have soiled our electoral process. Donald Trump may think he still has his small little hands around the necks of those districts where he won, but things are changing.

No one got rich, except the people who are already rich. No one got the big raise, which Trump promised would come. The coal mining companies aren’t hiring thousands of workers, as the candidate promised. Plants like Carrier and Harley-Davidson still moved some production out of the country. People continue to be laid off and there aren’t enough lies that can alter reality.

Lies and bravado are not as convincing as plain talk from a calm and moderate voice. We can learn a lot from Conor Lamb and the way he ran his campaign. He didn’t waste his time trying to take a wrecking ball to Donald Trump. He simply admitted how popular he is. He didn’t need to pledge loyalty to Nancy Pelosi, who apparently is damaged goods in American politics. Why does a political party keep electing a Speaker of the House who isn’t don’t liked by both parties?

Trump will try to fire his way out of the mess he has created. Like an animal who finds himself in quicksand, if the Donald just stood still he might have a chance. But he will keep changing and moving, thinking that he, and he alone, can make himself popular — all the while sinking lower and lower as the Democratic lambs watch.

ONE TRICK TRUMP

He’s Never Going to Stop Running

Back in the early days of William Randolph Hearst, he used his newspapers to pick winners and demean people he didn’t like. This became glorified by the term Yellow Journalism; presenting little or no legitimate well-researched news but rather using eye-catching headlines, exaggerated news events, scandal-mongering and sensationalism for increased newspaper sales.

Today, the implication of the opposite is the term “Fake News,” which is the slogan people in power now use to denigrate the news media they do not agree with or to slam stories they want the journalists to ignore. We see Trump playing this one trick when in the three-ringed circus of the campaign trail. If Trump keeps pitching for President, he will never convince any thinking person that he is a “real” president.

Steve Mnuchin told Chuck Todd that one cannot take things the President says at a campaign rally too seriously. Mnuchin bristled when Todd suggested that the press should maybe not cover these rally events. Todd failed to mention in this discourse with the Secretary of the Treasury what Trump said in Pittsburgh the night before. Speaking about NBC’s “Meet the Press, a show now headed by Sleepy-Eyes Chuck Todd. He is a sleeping son-of-a-bitch, I’ll tell you!”

There are some who say, “Oh, this is Trump being Trump,” while others are quick to criticize the President no matter what he says. His jokes are mean spirited and negative. What is really at stake is the presidency as a respected part of American culture. We have a clown with a face full of makeup, sniffling his way through speeches with either a teleprompter to make him seem normal, or endless, unguarded extemporaneous political babbling and childish putdowns that make him a small man exploiting his power without regard for leadership qualities.

Trump’s disregard for the spirit of the First Amendment is part of this one trick pony he rides. His censure of the press in general terms is an attempt to dismiss any controversy, misstep or criminal activity in his administration. He hangs on the phrase “No Collusion” like a man who has something to hide.

The First Amendment must be protected from Trump’s rhetoric and quest to weaken a free press. His demigod approach to the executive branch of the government needs to be checked at every step. His little moves will add up and must be analyzed by a free press.

Trump’s Sunday morning, tweets instead of Church “executive time” gave us this: “The Failing New York Times purposely wrote a false story stating that I am unhappy with my legal team on the Russia case and am going to add another lawyer to help out. Wrong. I am VERY happy with my lawyers, John Dowd, Ty Cobb and Jay Sekulow. They are doing a great job and have shown conclusively that there was no Collusion with Russia… just excuse for losing. The only Collusion was that done by the DNC, the Democrats and Crooked Hillary. The writer of the story, Maggie Haberman, a Hillary flunky, knows nothing about me and is not given access.”

The fact that Trump cannot let go of this issue shows that he doesn’t believe in his innocence. Like many people with a “martyr” complex, the Donald has a need to constantly slam the past. He positions himself against those who came before to get “credit” for anything good that happens, while taking no responsibility for anything his team may have done that didn’t work or, worse, was illegal. He seems to be worried more about historical positioning the future and comparisons with the past.

Trump may not even realize that he shows signs of being a white nationalist apologizer. Perhaps he is not smart enough to realize that his messaging makes it seem like being black in America equals guilt. Most importantly, his ideological way of viewing everything from trade to the environment to the legal system will have to repaired by the next president. Trump has clearly made America less great. I would advance that Donald J. Trump has hurt America with his ignorance and bad judgment.

This President of the United States is a bad role model for our children. His need to debase people and spread hate diminishes the advancements we have made as a society. Donald Trump is the prime cause of our national divide. His lack of desire or ability to bring people together is a fact right there for everyone to see. Some, however, want to believe what they require to believe. They have joined the lie and are complicit. When the money they think they are going to get doesn’t arrive, who will they blame then? Trump will be long gone.

THINGS ARE GETTING REAL NOW

The White House Walls Are Thin

It takes a special kind of person to be president. We often don’t know the character of a president until years later. When historians sift through facts, fantasies, fallacies and foibles, we eventually learn the truth. In the past we found out that one of our leaders believed God was talking to them, while another was comforting himself in the dark of night with spirits of a drinkable kind.

The current President sees himself through the lens of a hero coming to conquer all that he believes is wrong with America. In fact, if you asked Donald J. Trump who is the best president ever, he would cast a vote for himself without blinking. Many political experts believed that the end of the Donald’s political career would follow the Access Hollywood tape of Trump saying that he was so famous he could just “grab some pussy.” Let’s not be children here. Many of us knew exactly what kind of man we were getting when he was elected. Still, there were other Americans gullible enough to think it was nothing.

An event underlining the character of Donald J, Trump, the Stormy Daniels saga, will not go away. The intelligence pointing to something that happened in the Miss Universe Pageant, which Trump owned, is funny to me. He tweeted about the event: “The Miss Universe Pageant will be broadcast live from MOSCOW, RUSSIA on November 9th, 2013. A big deal that will bring our countries together! Do you think Putin will be going to The Miss Universe Pageant? If so, will he become my new best friend?”

He was sending a message to Russia, with love, that he was enthralled by the power and money of the country. It exposed an unhealthy desire for its leader. Yes, with Trump able to get whatever “pussy” he could ever want, why not a bromance with the leader of the unfree world?

Steve Bannon’s made a brilliant move to nullify the Access Hollywood tape and dozens of women who accused Trump of sexual misconduct by pushing the Bill Clinton accusers back into the spotlight and Trump was elected. It was as if what was in front of our eyes didn’t exist. Well, now we have a sordid affair with a porn actress that Trump’s consigliere, Michael Dean Cohn, paid $130,000 to gain her silence, or else.

We now know that the “or else” is a payment of $1 million if she breaks the non-disclosure agreement, a small price to pay to free the maiden from the legal tentacles of the mean man in the house at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. He had an affair shortly after his son was born and one can argue that to save his marriage, or perhaps his presidential bid, he had to buy out the woman. If he paid her to save his campaign, that is an illegal campaign contribution that can entangle his business as well. Who paid Stormy Daniels? Where did the money come from? Perhaps it came from one of Trump’s not-for-profit foundations?

And how can this not nudge the evangelicals into a questioning phase of Trump’s fake relationship with bible-thumbing groups? He is not a man of character and, like Putin, the end justifies the means. He got them to “follow him” just as false prophets have tricked holy men and women before. When will they stand up for Jesus and get rid of this money changer for good?

Trump doesn’t care about anyone but himself. He says he like chaos and appreciates when people disagree with him, and then he fires them. Just like an affair with a two-bit actress, he uses and then discards people. He makes his henchmen sign non-disclosure agreements because he always has something to hide. I am sure Melania Trump had to sign a legal document to become the First Lady.

Trump is the bull in the china shop who walks away without paying for the damage. He said he was proud to use the bankruptcy laws to escape financial ruin, and then not pay taxes for years after. He has committed wrongdoings in the name of democracy, or America, or male-pride, or a serious need to be loved. It’s starting to get real.

The Stormy Daniels payment and people leaving the administration like rats leaving a sinking ship cannot be avoided. You can bribe people to say everything is okay and chaos is good, but, turnover is turnover. There’s a cost when people leave, and the investment in and training of new people, always slows the wheels of accomplishment. Trump’s tariff deal was seriously under baked without the details needed for a major policy announcement. Trump’s move was amateurish, at best, and Gary Cohn knew it, so he resigned.

This will never get better until Trump quits. Or maybe we must remove him. He’s just not that good at this president thing.

NEGLECT, THE NRA & NEO-NAZIS

The Complicit President

One of the great miscalculations of the decade came from the gun-suckers at the National Rifle Association during the 2018 Conservative Political Action Conference. They heavily miscalculated their message and, unfortunately for America, our sitting President is equally tone-deaf. This post may get me on two enemies lists for the price of one, but it seems like there is a wind blowing and the updraft from the heat and sorrow of death is lifting opinions.

The NRA must surely be wondering why their messaging hit such a sour note in Maryland last week. Like most shows, a comedian warmed up the audience so that the star had an audience primed and ready for the headliner. Ms. Dana Loesch said, “Many in legacy media love mass shootings. You guys love it. I’m not saying you love the tragedy. But I am saying that you love the ratings. Crying white mothers are ratings gold… And notice I said crying white mothers because there are thousands of grieving black mothers in Chicago every weekend and you don’t see town halls for them, do you?”

With that statement, Loesch sparked a tweetstorm from people all over the United States. Some might say it was insensitive to make those remarks within 24-hours of the CNN Town Hall with survivors of the Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy, but the words were more than obtuse. They were an example of the numbing reality that the NRA’s tactics are not caring, open or helpful. They sensed, for the first time, that people were coming for them in the dead of night with torches. They overreacted.

Their leader, Wayne LaPierre, has a famous slug-line, “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun.” He marched into the room and attempted to present the NRA as a solid front and to reaffirm himself as the puppeteer pulling the strings of Congress and our President. The leader of the NRA misconstrued some of the basic points of his association’s existence. Yes, of course, the National Rifle Association is a registered lobbyist, but they want to be more. And it wasn’t more than seconds before Donald Trump was parroting the points that LaPierre was making on stage at CPAC.

What disturbed many corporate leaders was not only the divisive rhetoric of Dana Loesch, but the highly-charged words of LaPierre. He advanced a political attack that sounded like Germany rhetoric from 1939. And if you think words don’t matter, consider this: Anti-Semitic incidents in the United States soared by 57 percent in 2017, according to a new report from the Anti-Defamation League. That’s the largest single-year increase in more than two decades. There was an 86 percent rise in vandalism.

Wayne’s world protects 100 million-gun owners by getting money from five million members. There are companies who believe that supporting the NRA is good business. I don’t understand why Delta Airlines, Hertz Rent a Car and other companies thought that offering discounts to NRA members was a good idea. Do they offer discounts to Super PACs or other lobbyist members?

The NRA damaged their brand with those two speeches and, of course, proved the point the high school students were making. With LaPierre saying that the “European Socialists” were controlling the minds of the masses, he was sending a message that anyone who confronts the NRA is politically bad for America. He sounded like a politician running for office.

The speech reeked of Neo-Nazi messaging. And while the CEO of the NRA was defending his cause he had no idea that Nikolas Cruz, the shooter in Parkland, Florida, etched swastikas in his ammunition magazines. Oops!

In 2015, Dylann Roof confessed to murdering nine African Americans at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, one of 40 states not requiring background checks for private gun transactions. In clear sight on the internet, Roof espoused racial hatred. Photographs there showed him posing with emblems associated with white supremacy. He had also been arrested. He beat the system.

When a reformed Neo-Nazi appeared on CBS’ 60 Minutes trying to motivate others from getting sucked into the group, Dylann Roof sent him a letter from prison that read: “I know you won’t be, but you really should be ashamed of yourself. Traitor, you’ve really cashed in, haven’t you? I hope you know that you are 100 times worse than the Jews you’ve surrounded yourself with.” No repent there.

And with the death of a woman in Charlottesville, Virginia, during a Unite the Right rally, it was clear that a statement from the President would have helped the situation. Rather than denounce this bullshit, Donald Trump gave a convolved message of “fine people on both sides.” He advanced anti-political correctness rather than calling out Neo-Nazis. He worried about a Robert E. Lee statue more than America.

Donald Trump, through stupidity or complicity, has not created a strong message against the KKK, Nazis, White Nationalist and other terror groups operating in America. The NRA fights any effort to track gun owners, so it’s impossible to know names and locations of the bad guys. And much of Congress shakes in their boots when it comes to the NRA. Nothing happens, and not only is Trump complicit but he has neglected his duty to keep us safe.

The voice of the Florida students and the corporate boycotts will alarm companies who would rather not be involved in politics. This time the NRA veered off course and made a wide turn away from the Second Amendment. With LaPierre critiquing other facets of government and society, he struck a hateful Trumpian tone. CEOs and boards of directors are nervous. Good use of social media this time!

Wayne LaPierre doesn’t have the credibility to talk about leaks in the intelligence community, media bias or universities he claims are spearheading a socialist revolution by emphasizing the teachings of Karl Marx. He added that America was trending toward a “growing socialist state.” Adolf Hitler was against Karl Marx as well and said, “Our adopted term ‘Socialist’ has nothing to do with Marxian Socialism. Marxism is anti-property; true socialism is not.”

The Nazis adopted a new gun law in 1938, allowing Non-Jews to buy rifles, shotguns and ammunition. Handguns were also easy to own, buy, sell or carry. Local officials could even allow people under the age of 18 to buy a gun. Gee, how did that work out? Lots of crazy brown-shirted kids killing Jews.

Saying that anything which challenges their power is somehow connected to European Socialism and Karl Marx, has not only blurred the message of the NRA but has left trouble and blood on their hands.

The NRA has failed to understand America. When people suggest true universal background checks on gun purchases, they aren’t talking about Karl Marx. They are talking about Making America Safe Again. In the bigger picture, the smart people in the United States with knowledge of history are hearing exactly what the NRA is saying, “You cannot fuck with us.” As our President has said, “We will see.”

ARMED EDUCATORS

Trump’s Dangerous Demonic Deal

When constructing a sentence, our President often sounds as if he’s pitching an idea or suggesting an action. It’s not just James Comey who thought that he was getting an order from Trump. I am sure this happens to people in the administration all the time. It has to do with clarity.

During the extremely intense meeting with survivors of mass shootings the other day at the White House, Donald Trump, packed with notes and suggested comments, listened intently until the end. This is when he wanted everyone to know what idea he was most impressed with. He said, “Our concept and your idea about — it’s called concealed carry — and it only works where you have people very adept at using firearms, of which you have many, and it would be teachers and coaches. They’d go for special training.  And they would be there, and you would no longer have a gun-free zone.   A gun-free zone to a maniac — because they’re all cowards — a gun-free zone is, let’s go in and let’s attack, because bullets aren’t coming back at us.”

He also used the phrase, “We’re going to be looking at it very strongly.” And with this, the whole country started a discussion based on what Trump said at the meeting. This is a common theme with our President. During the campaign, he talked a lot about San Bernardino and Paris and he kept proselytizing a notion that an active shooter situation cannot be solved without bullets going back the other way. It’s an interesting turn of a phase that evokes a visual of ammo zipping in two directions through the air.

As the nation was trying to digest his concept, one that the National Rifle Association has talked about for years, he seemed to put on the brakes and blast out a defensive tweet: “I never said “give teachers guns” like was stated on Fake News @CNN & @NBC. What I said was to look at the possibility of giving “concealed guns to gun adept teachers with military or special training experience – only the best 20% of teachers, a lot, would now be able to immediately fire back if a savage sicko came to a school with bad intentions. Highly trained teachers would also serve as a deterrent to the cowards that do this. Far more assets at much less cost than guards. A “gun free” school is a magnet for bad people. ATTACKS WOULD END!”

I am not sure what is going on, but this sounds like someone suffering from dual personality syndrome. And talks about this being an “offense” measure, surely that would be a defensive measure, right Donald? Now if you are starting to believe that Trump was taking on the NRA, don’t get your hopes up. He’s not going to give back the $30 million they spent to help him win the election. It didn’t take very long before the Donald was back on Twitter showing his true colors: “What many people don’t understand, or don’t want to understand, is that Wayne, Chris and the folks who work so hard at the @NRA are Great People and Great American Patriots. They love our Country and will do the right thing.”

Sure, we all get it Mr. President. The next shooter somehow figures out how to get into a school, starts to shoot the place up, and the 20% of our trained teachers with “concealed weapons” run to where they hear the AR-15 blasting and engage the shooter. Sounds like a plan, but what if there is more than one shooter? What if the next time the lunatics use a bomb? These people are terrorists and should be countered with tactical police forces and SWAT. What I believe is a shooter who is CRAZY and NUTS, like everyone is saying, either won’t know or won’t care which school has a couple of teacher-cops. The reason the Cruz kid picked Stoneman Douglas is because they expelled him, and he was a very disturbed kid. Donald Trump, your premise is totally wrong.

Hijackers are NOT discouraged because there might be an Air Marshall onboard, they are deterred by a very active logical TSA inspection. If properly executed, it’s impossible to get a bomb or gun onboard an airplane. Sure, we need to make every school safer, but the 2019 budget doesn’t provide enough money for mental health services and better doors and security procedures at all schools. You might want to move some money from the military to education so that you can properly protect the homeland.

And are these armed teachers going to have to buy their own guns, Mr. President, like they currently must buy supplies and equipment for the students out their own pockets? And will there be a database of background checks on the teachers? Will the parents get to know if they have any mental illness or criminal records? Gee, now we must make sure that the teacher is ready to kill someone. Do they have to take an oath?  And then, Trump says they should get a bonus for carrying a gun. Boy, if you don’t pack a gun you make less money, is that fair?

Trump says that if a shooter knows teachers are armed, they will think twice about attacking a specific school, really? That idea wasn’t even dry before Trump decries the use of the term “active shooter” drills. So, Mr. Know-it-all-President, which is it? Are we making a child nervous about knowing their mean teacher has a gun, or preparing them for the possibility of a shooter? They know about shooters, that’s all over the TV.

The deal the President is making with the devil can only be portrayed as clinical insanity. Let’s see, to end gun violence we need to mix in some more guns. What the President is saying is exactly what the NRA has been saying for more than a decade. The National Rifle Association is talking like a right-wing political organization, rather than a collection of gun owners. They are the tool of the manufacturers of guns and each Congress person they give money to is their bitch.

As we add more guns, more accidents will happen. We won’t be safer. Even if you could imagine every teacher and administrator having a gun, we learned today that even a good guy with a gun in Parkland (on-campus officer) stood outside while a bad gun with a gun was killing our children. Are you really basing your whole unproven theory on a few pistols defending against AR-15s? Why wouldn’t Trump know this? I guess he gets all his advice by the very people who are creating the problem.

BANG, BANG, YOU’RE DEAD

An Open Letter to High School Students of America

As an America more than five times your age, I come to you with some advice and I urge you to listen. In my life, I was opposed to the Vietnam war. My friends and fellow students were being sent 7,400 miles to fight a war we hardly understood. Some of my friends were killed. It was obvious that my government didn’t understand what we felt. History has revealed the lies and illegal actions of the “adults” running the United States of America during that dark time. It was a bi-partisan effort to kill us.

You have been awakened by a demonic tragedy and the misuse of a lethal weapon. You are joining hands and marching and chanting. You want to make a difference. We are with you. We care about you. We cry for you. We will march with you. We understand what you are saying. Wisdom of the past will help you. Learn about civil disobedience and your right to peacefully assemble. This isn’t going to be easy.

To end the Vietnam war, we had to expose the lies. We needed help from the free press and, in some cases, brave whistle-blowers with valuable documents like the Pentagon Papers. Google it. We had to see blood being spilled on the nightly news and middle America had to understand that these were “our boys” who were bleeding in the jungles. Your classroom floors will be cleaned, but you will never forget the terror you experienced. You need to bring that horror to the public. They need to understand what happened. As macabre and disrespectful as some might think, pictures of bloody bodies would make Congress wake up and start talking about solutions.

Next, I want you to know that the NRA and pro-gun factions in this great nation of ours will see you as the enemy. They will come after you and they will attack you. They won’t be using guns; they will be using propaganda. They will do research on you and your parents, and they will disclose connections to anything that even hints at “left-wing radical” associations. They will claim that you are being funded by Democratic Super PACs and you will hear the name George Soros. Do not listen to these talking heads on TV. They are not your friends. They will be attacking your cause célèbre and the fact that you have a platform; you have a voice. Do not get sucked into their nonsense.

If you start to make inroads in your quest to get gun regulations, they will attack you on very personal levels. They will circulate rumors about your sex life, they will put you on an enemy list, they will infiltrate your schools and try to get other students to rally against you. It’s an old playbook and I am simply reading a few pages from it. You will hear the term, “outside agitators,” which is code for linking you to some communist left-winged group. Do not stray from your message.

The NRA is a very powerful lobbyist group and they will pour money into defeating you. Be careful when they say they want to meet with you. And be extremely on guard when it comes to Donald Trump. He will tell you he is open to review and modification of the gun laws. He will suggest that he is “evolving” on the issue. He will even issue a memo to his Attorney General to “look into” whether “bump stocks” are legal, while he uses executive order to push almost a million dreamers to the edge of panic. He waited four and half months after the Las Vegas shooting to write his memo. Score a D- for him.

In the end, Trump will listen to the gun hawks and will walk away from you when the story dies. He already left behind the dead bodies in Las Vegas, Texas and the other killing fields. Donald Trump is not your friend. He will use you to placate moderate Republicans. Donald Trump is not an inadequate President, he’s an inadequate person.

You need to learn the terms of the Second Amendment and their importance to the far right in America. They will continue to let you die to save this sentence: A well -regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Now let’s talk about the March 24, 2018 march on Washington you are planning. Get as many people as you can to attend this event and don’t worry about who will promote it. You know how to use the internet and social media to motivate people.  Do it! You also need to think about giving marchers advice on where to stay and how to get around once there. Get the National Park people to help you. That’s their job. They did it for Martin Luther King, Jr. and they did it for the Million Man March and they did it for right wing groups. They are there for you. And be sure to read up on other rallies and protests in the Capitol, here.

And finally, you must continually state your goal. You must be extremely clear in what you are demanding. An 18-year-old kid can’t buy a beer or a hand-gun but can buy an AR-15 (semi-automatic rifle) and you must change the laws. You must not waiver. If we got Nixon to end the Vietnam War, you surely can motivate a bunch of old white guys to listen. If they don’t, vote them out. Just stay the course, there will be many of them to vote out.

CAMO and AMMO

What Money Buys in America

A very funny writer named Lewis Grizzard wrote for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. As a true southerner, he used to say, “First, we really don’t care how you did it in Chicago. Second, if you miss it so much, Delta is ready when you are.” So, when we hear someone from somewhere else try to tell us how things are, we Americans tend to get a bit riled. As a transplanted Yankee in the South, the late, great Lewis still makes me laugh.

We all know what is going on here. One of the most powerful lobbyists in America is the National Rifle Association. It’s strange that in America one can buy a “rifle” when they are young and not fully developed mentally, but they cannot buy a pistol. Yeah, see, the “Rifle” part in the N.R.A. is what we are protecting here. Because we need to have these long guns to protect the nation from a take-over by the deep state, a dark force some believe will soon be coming to take our guns away.

Now I have a writer friend from Great Britain, who claims to know everything about anything, and every once in awhile he proves it to me. After reading our post of 2-15-2018, THAT HOLLOW FEELING, AGAIN, he dashed off a note to me with some facts from across the pond:

“The United States has the highest number of guns per 100 inhabitants than ANY OTHER COUNTRY ON EARTH! 101 guns per one hundred persons. Compare that to the UK, which has 6.6 guns per one hundred persons.

Why compare it to the UK? Because, as you will learn, as things got worse with gun violence, their lawmakers redefined their laws. There might be a lesson here.

As CNN wrote: “In the wake of the 1987 Hungerford massacre, in which one lone gunman killed 16 people, Britain introduced new legislation — the Firearms (Amendment) Act 1988 — making registration mandatory for owning shotguns and banning semi-automatic and pump-action weapons.

After the only school massacre that took place in the United Kingdom (16 children were killed in Dunblane, Scotland in 1996), they cracked down on guns – and banned handguns altogether. The Dunblane shooter fitted the same profile as Nikolas Cruz, the latest killer in Florida. But rather than blame mental health, our British allies tackled the issue head on.

Within a year and a half of the Dunblane massacre, UK lawmakers had passed a ban on the private ownership of all handguns in mainland Britain, giving the country some of the toughest anti-gun legislation in the world. After both shootings there were firearm amnesties across the UK, resulting in the surrender of thousands of firearms and rounds of ammunition.”

We thank our friend for his facts and figures, but this banning of weapons is exactly what the hard-core Camo and Ammo hunters in the US fear. When Obama was president, gun sales soared because of a rumor that the first African President was coming to take all the guns away. We must keep an open mind here. After all, things are getting worse not better. More facts from our friend:

“Britain has never had a “gun culture” like that of the United States, but there were about 200,000 legally-registered handguns in Britain before the ban, most owned by sports shooters. All small-bore pistols, including the .22 caliber, were included in the ban, along with rifles used by target shooters. Penalties for anyone found in possession of illegal firearms range from heavy fines to prison terms of up to ten years.

Did this draconian action have any impact? Well, here’s the sobering (and, to the NRA, very inconvenient) FACT: You are 45 times more likely to be killed by a gun in the US than in the UK. In the US, we have 10.55-gun deaths per 100,000 people per year, while in the UK only 0.23-gun deaths per 100,000 people per year.”

Now it’s easy to say that banning gun ownership will never work here, and you can go back to Cleveland, or Chicago or Scratchy Bottom, Dorset Maybe we should be looking at how other places handled this problem. We certainly are doing a lousy job of it.

We hear a dishonorable slogan after a shooting, “Now is not the time” as in, “now is not the time to talk about a problem until we get over the grief and sorrow of a terrible shooting.” Really? Must the emotion be drained from the moment, so we can collectively forget about it? Doesn’t the lack of action confirm a lack of care?

Or is it a simple fact that the politicians have been bought by the N.R.A. and nothing is exactly what they are supposed to do? Donald Trump doesn’t help the matter at all. He does three things that make matters worse:

  • He constantly pushes a notion of a deep-state that somehow makes it necessary to remain paranoid about defending democracy from some invisible tyrant.
  • He aligns himself with hate and promotes fear and negativity at every turn. Most of what he says tells us how bad things were or are and that he is there to fix it. He plays with the feeble minds ready to snap and fight back. However, these unstable people fight back by killing.
  • He promotes guns and, therefore, lethal force. By demanding that we have a large arsenal of weapons to protect our country, he glorifies the need to have guns. He equates weaponry with strength and those who feel weak in the system have been given permission to have weapons and ammo.

So, we must vote against the N.R.A. at the ballot box and change things for the better in America. Why are we letting guns get in the way of our safety and happiness? If Donald Trump and Congress fail to act on this issue, they are making America less safe. And one could argue, not honoring the oath of office they took. Throw the bums out!

DESPERATE & DISTRACTED

The Growing Fear of Government

Some say that the Trump administration is a train wreck. What seems to have been ignored by this President is the fact we have had two actual train wrecks and more than 50 children have died from the flu. Where was our great leader when US citizens were in pain and dying? He was busy tweeting away for himself:

“This memo totally vindicates “Trump” in probe. But the Russian Witch Hunt goes on and on. Their was no Collusion and there was no Obstruction (the word now used because, after one year of looking endlessly and finding NOTHING, collusion is dead). This is an American disgrace!” One would think the President of the United States would use spell check on his phone but, no, accuracy is not his thing.

He continued his harangue, “The four page memo released Friday reports the disturbing fact about how the FBI and FISA appear to have been used to influence the 2016 election and its aftermath….The FBI failed to inform the FISA court that the Clinton campaign had funded the dossier….the FBI became a tool of anti-Trump political actors. This is unacceptable in a democracy and ought to alarm anyone who wants the FBI to be a nonpartisan enforcer of the law….The FBI wasn’t straight with Congress, as it hid most of these facts from investigators. Wall Street Journal”

While this was happening, people were injured and dying. Trump is right, the Russian interference probe is totally distracting him from being a good president. A decent leader would have been front and center on transportation safety and would have been using his pulpit to ask for more money on infrastructure. Maybe he should be calling for all the safety procedures to be put into action right now. You can’t always be anti-rules when people’s lives are in the balance.

While our president wastes his time tweeting and defending himself, two of his important appointees hit the wall. And their importance to the administration should not be ignored.

In July 2017, Tom Price appointed Brenda Fitzgerald as the Director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The first job of the new Health and Human Services Secretary, Alex Azar, was getting rid of Director Fitzgerald. After POLITICO reported that the director had traded in tobacco stocks while she led the agency, she was asked to resign. And let’s not forget that Tom Price was forced to resign because of misuse of government funds using private planes.

While this was happening, Kathleen Hartnett White, who was Trump’s choice to chair the Council on Environmental Quality under Rick Perry, had her nomination withdrawn by the administration. White, not a scientist, has declared climate change findings as “the dogmatic claims of ideologues and clerics.” During her Senate hearing last November, she defended past statements that particulate pollution released by burning fuels is not harmful, unless one were to suck on a car’s tailpipe. With Ms. White’s withdrawal for consideration, we see a major flaw in the Trump presidency. There is a complete lack of responsible vetting. These people are being served up to the President by the party in power as paybacks for political deeds done dirt cheap. Not all the bad people are being found and forced out by the process of nominations and hearings. And that is what we should be worrying about. These fools Trump puts into positions of power might harm the very people the President says he is here to protect.

With the release of the phony Nunes memo, it’s clear that we have a President who is manipulating the Speaker of the House, and most Republicans who have sold their souls for political gain and job security. They, too, are flawed in their thinking. While attempting to erect a wall to protect himself from the FBI and the Department of Justice, Trump fails to understand that the men and women who sit on the Supreme Court will follow the law, not a fool soaked in Propecia.

I find it rather strange that the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, has this growing fear of the government. He is trying to make a case that those in law enforcement are against him. He should just start using #OrangeLivesMatter, because obviously he has some great fear of being abused by the people who are paid to protect us from criminals, drug-cartels, fraud and terrorists. Finally, Trump now knows how someone feels when they have been pulled over in the dead of night by an aggressive cop not willing to hear their side of the story. Poor baby.

DREAMERS VS. ILLEGALS

Trump’s Name Games

It amazes me how Americans get sucked so easily into fads, phrases and fallacies. We gravitate toward simple thoughts to arm ourselves with a snappy retort to appear smart. These are mostly talking points from “our side” but they appear stupid when put under the microscope. We repeat some slogan that has been hammered into our skull by self-serving politicians or repetitive usage by the media.

The minority party Democrats thought they would pull off a crafty move last week by shutting down the government for leverage against the White House’s scattered statements about a fix for DACA. The Deferred Action executive order that President Obama had signed to get around Congress’s lack of action helped more than 600,000 undocumented aliens who were brought to this country illegally when they were kids. Obama’s DACA set Trump up to knock it down.

Majority Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell quickly framed the discussion with the word, “illegals”, while the Democrats were concentrating on DACA and immigration reform. Either McConnell or Trump, most likely both, branded the shutdown as the #SchumerShutdown, which, with the help of Russian bots, became the winning label. It may have also inadvertently elevated Schumer’s power.

The Democrats should realize that they aren’t good at marketing phrases and that putting Trump’s name on something doesn’t make it good. Look at all those buildings with his name on them, not special. Along with the Schumer alliteration, the majority players managed to make it seem like the donkey party was hurting government workers because of their love of illegal immigrants.

Now, we sit back and watch how the White House takes credit for ending the shutdown, just as the Donald tweeted that the women’s march was all about him. Name games, sleight of hand and the audacity to believe he is always right are just some of many personality-disorders this man embodies.

What we get from the real Trump is a combative, argumentative posture that might be his interpretation of what politicians are supposed to do. It could also be, as one medical professional said recently, “Maybe he’s not crazy; maybe he’s just a jerk.”

All his spokespeople carry the same gene. They argue instead of informing or convincing the public that the policy is a good idea. Often a “journalist” will ask a question and the interviewee responds, “I disagree with the premise of your question” and then begins an assault of the media. Why? Why not answer the question, make your point and move on? Why is everything an argument?

The whole premise of who won the shutdown is stupid. It wasn’t even a good shutdown, lasting only from midnight Friday until Monday afternoon. No one was really hurt. No one gained anything but a weak promise to debate broader immigration reform with no guarantee this won’t happen again. The whole non-event could have been avoided if the President of the United States had done his job.

Candidate and citizen Trump had no problems explaining how the President should step in and fix the broken system. Instead he decided to just say no, after flip-flopping and defensive posturing and insulting Africa and Haiti and all the people of color of the world. He said he would sign anything they brought him and then he said no to everything they suggested. What a feckless third-rate politician, not the one you all voted for, right?

If you are looking for some answers about why people don’t approve of Trump, look no further than what he has done so far. Our public lands and historical places are less secure from the menace of development. The world influence, sported in trade, diplomacy and climate protection, is gone. People in the red domains may think this president is strong, funny and truly leading, but he’s mucking up most things.

Congress figured out over the weekend that more would get done without the Donald involved. And if the Democrats don’t get DACA in February, they will shut down the government again. If you blame them for trying, or just go along with the premise that Trump must know what he is doing, you are still wrong. The deeper the divide between the sides in America, and the hate that has surfaced against minorities and religions, is all on Trump. He can craft funny names for things, but in the end he will be judged not for what he accomplished, but what will have to be fixed after he leaves.
