BIG LIES & LITTLE MINDS

We Cannot Trust the Trump Government

Well, we’re almost through another week but that certainly doesn’t make things feel any better. There is no “light of the end of the tunnel” because we still have the same people telling the same lies, cherry picking data and hurting states with Democratic governors. With soaring, positive tests, hospitalizations and death, Trump is now pressuring and pushing to open our schools. I hope we can beat this virus, but the lies are really clogging our brains.

First, let’s take the biggest lie Donald Trump keeps telling. That because he shut down the flights from China, he saved millions and millions of lives. According to the Associated Press, “An analysis of Commerce Department travel entry records and private aviation data shows that nearly 8,000 Chinese nationals and foreign residents of Hong Kong and Macao entered the U.S. on more than 600 commercials and private flights in the first three months after the ban was imposed.” Donald Trump’s myth has no factual backing. He didn’t stop everyone coming from China and it probably hurt us, but he’s the orange knight on the white horse here to save us all.

From the beginning, Trump has downplayed the threat of the coronavirus and spent more time blaming China and its people for the origin and death this curse brought to our shores. What he totally ignored was the virus was equally spreading in Europe and the UK at the same time. He failed to understand the virus is not a product of any one country but a global pandemic. You cannot put a tax or tariff on a virus; it travels where it wants to. Trump’s ridiculous blaming of the World Health Organization and China doesn’t help our fight against the plague.

Trump has no comprehension of how a virus works. He’s too busy pushing medicines that he “heard would be a game changer” rather than listening to the experts. He invented a solution to a problem that could hurt a lot of people. On July 6, 2020, Peter Navarro appeared on CNN, talking about the merits of hydroxychloroquine and why he bought so much of it. He’s a fool. He has no medical expertise and was promoting a Trump plan that can hurt people. Why is he in the government? The obsessive Trump endorsement of an unproven drug was one giant lie.

The next lie that I find most despicable is the shell game Trump plays with the COVID-19 Task Force. I knew we were in trouble when Mike Pence was appointed to head this group. That man can talk for ten minutes, never answering any question and never offering anything but vague cheerleading, preposterous platitudes and misinformation. He must either think people are stupid or he believes all that bullshit that comes out of his mouth, which would mean he’s stupid.

The country wasn’t prepared for a pandemic and no one will admit that our sales of PPE to China early on left our stockpiles dangerously low. They lie about the wearing of masks, which I believe was caused by the rush on toilet paper. Yes, the brain trust in the White House saw so much toilet paper flying off the shelves at stores and they feared a run on masks which would hurt medical workers and hospitals. So, they admitted by omitting that good advice from the beginning that the administration was not ready.

Early in the pandemic, President Trump was asked about testing and he brazenly said, “There is no way we are going to test everybody in the country. Not going to happen.” Had I been in the room, I would have yelled out, “Why not?” If we truly are this great country with all this money, technology and medical expertise, why would we not test everyone and stop this virus as fast as possible? WHY? Because Donald Trump was unable to confirm his belief that the coronavirus was even here in the USA.

In the midst of a global pandemic, American healthcare and safety is being hijacked and put on hold by Donald Trump, whose only priority is getting reelected. Every one of his predictions, pushes and pontifications have been lies that only made matters worse.

I am about to say something here that I am so sad writing. Moving too fast to reopen the country, which was totally Donald John Trump’s idea, has killed people. With all the political misdirection, Trump has convinced the very dull that they don’t need to wear a mask. Why? The answer to this will be obvious in the new Mary Trump book, but it was also pointed by a smart comment on this blog, “I don’t think he cares anymore, period. He knows he has lost the war against the virus, the war to “save” the economy, perhaps even the war to save himself. A spoiled child who can’t have his own way will pick up his marbles and go home — game over. But a spoiled narcissist with no conscience — he blows up the game. No one can play if he can’t. I fear that is the real Donald Trump playbook we are seeing now.” Oh my God, if this is true, how can we get rid of him, NOW!

BROADWAY DARK, AMERICA DIM

Trump Has No Answers and Cannot Lead

I was deeply saddened last night when I heard that Broadway star Nick Cordero lost his battle with COVID-19. He spent three months of sheer agony and pure hell that included a leg amputation. This guy was at the top of his game and only 41 years old. There is nothing more American than Broadway entertainment, and I have never seen a show there that was anything less than the highest levels of professional production and achievement. It’s tough to make it on Broadway and we will miss Nick.

I felt a slight burn in my heart last night viewing the statistics panel on the TV news programs showing 130,000 dead Americans to the coronavirus. Why am I having this feeling now? Humans are rather protective with their emotions, but some things occasionally cut through. When a famous person gets or succumbs to COVID-19, it makes the contagion seem more real, remarkably close and nervously inevitable. I hoped the President’s tone would change after the announcement that Herman Cain and Don Jr.’s girlfriend, Kimberly Guilfoyle, tested positive for the virus. That didn’t happen, but there is still time to save some lives.

Confession here, I am reading John Bolton’s book The Room Where It Happened: A White House Memoir, and as I get further into the case Bolton presents I become even more deeply doubtful that Donald John Trump will, 1. Ever Change, 2. Listen to anyone else and 3. Find a reasonable way to help both the economy and the health of the American people in a way that won’t cause more harm than good. It’s not the country that is “dim;” it’s the guy running the place who has no logic lights in his brain.

I understand some of the “grievance” and “revenge politics” that pour out of Trump’s little, ill-formed puss, but all of that is getting old. Does this President genuinely believe that those stone and bronze statues represent real heroes who are more important than living people? There was another Don, Mr. Quixote, who thought windmills were out to get him. No one can think clearly if they see an enemy lurking in every shadow. Killing another windmill will not earn you knighthood, Mr. Trump. Your words and behavior make you look panic-stricken and stupid.

Donald Trump is dealing with this global pandemic the same way that Herbert Hoover handled the financial collapse in 1929. Hoover spent only one term in office and he was called the “Do nothing President” by Democrats. After Hoover was defeated, newly elected President Franklin Delano Roosevelt launched stronger policies to bring back the country. It’s history.

Trump knows the clock is ticking, yet he’s done nothing to keep people safe and achieve financial stability during this pandemic. Because of his ineptness, we were late to fight the COVID crisis and the deaths of so many Americans are all the proof you need. Let’s also not forget the surging cases in those states that opened early. That was Trump’s gamble, and he LOST.

Nick Cordero’s death comes in the middle of this crisis, not the end. Don’t trust what the Donald wants you to believe. His mouth spews only lies and political bullshit. The pandemic is serious and real.

The fact that our President is spending so much energy, time and words on Confederate monuments and his dark decree of a left-wing revolution conspiracy is profoundly unworthy of the America people. We deserve clarity and focus, but we will never get those from him. Just like his pronouncement that wearing a mask would make him look ridiculous, Trump’s obsession with protecting traitors like Jefferson Davis makes a person wonder if he has any understanding of American voters. None of them care about the Confederate flag. They are focused on their jobs, finances and families. Donald Trump is just a waste of time.

Trump’s ridiculous claim that 99% of the COVID cases “are totally harmless,” when some states are seeing as high as 16% of those tested being positive, shows what an idiot he is. Even an asymptomatic carrier can do much harm in the community. It’s called “community spread.” The President’s family has the virus and they could spread it to him. What a fool.

The future looks dim and Trump has neither a plan nor words to bring us together. Maybe we can gain some clarity from four of the greatest American songwriters, Cynthia Weil, Barry Mann, Mike Stoller and Jerry Leiber, who worked together to create one of the greatest songs of all time, On Broadway.

“They say the neon lights are bright on Broadway, They say there’s always magic in the air, But when you’re walkin’ down the street, And you ain’t had enough to eat, The glitter rubs right off and you’re nowhere…” Trump fails to understand that this “virus thing” isn’t a plot that’s after him. It’s coming for us, all of us. Donald Trump refuses to stand between the pandemic and the country.

The President says the pandemic is a Democratic conspiracy against him. Maybe he should explain to Amanda Kloots, Nick Cordero’s wife, that it was simply a “hoax” that took her husband from her. Maybe Donald can fund a scholarship for Nick and Amanda’s one-year-old son, Elvis, BUT WHAT ABOUT EVERYONE ELSE? Trump can’t show any respect for the dead and the families that will carry this pain for the rest of their lives. The man has no empathy!

The glitter has fallen off the grifter’s diminutive hands and he is nowhere. He’s the absentee president who is the primary problem of our country. He needs to get sucked out of the Oval Office, like Hoover.

ODE TO THE DUNCE

A Pandemic Poem of Love

Ode To The Dunce

I woke up this morning and looked at the numbers of the dead,

My eyes got weary, my face grew flush, so sad, blood red.

We want to believe in truth and always go with what’s right,

Too bad we find ourselves being led by a chief without sight.

The dunce in the corner wants to do right, but he’s shrunken,

Into himself and his lies and those fans who seem drunken.

Let’s have another rally and bring them all together to cheer,

Spreading the curse, talking stupid and adding lots of fear.

The orange man filled his head with tons of hydroxychloroquine,

The unprepared dolt believes he can just command a vaccine.

We all know that a dunce hat can protect a wretched comb over,

But he keeps preaching, all this COVID stuff will just blow over.

Deep down inside this dullard doesn’t do anything to help the cause,

Can’t wear a mask, or tell us the truth, just leads us into the virus jaws.

The denials of the dunce, pull us deeper, down into the corona curse,

He wants your money for another four, he’s halfway into your purse.

There is nothing more convincing than a cold, dead body of a friend,

Never trust a damning charlatan with what he cannot comprehend.

There once was a little man who deep down just wanted to be king,

Being pushed by the bigots and angry cowards of the right wing.

He misses the point of what we are going through in this great land,

He thinks he can put out the embers, while his words are a big fan.

What must the dunce do when people all around him test positive?

He makes things up and thinks lying is his God-given prerogative.

The virus dominates our lives, it creeps closer to the dunce in the corner,

He’s so fearful of poisonous leaks but shows no empathy for the mourner.

This gutless whore doesn’t deserve to be President of this wonderful place,

He’s a disgrace to our people, and to the whole damn human race.

We all want to get back to something we can call normal right now,

But the dunce at the top, cannot help us, it’s just not his style.

He’s just another politician with his hand out and his small brain closed,

Trump told us we were on our own, with him in power, we’re certainly hosed.

And when the dunce leaves the corner for good, he’ll go back to playing golf,

We will be free to progress, while he can call his buddies, Vladimir and Adolph.

He can tell his heroes about how great he made America and lie another day,

While we’re left to kneel and ask God to save the world and pray.

May we find solace when this man is cast aside for reason and direction,

Not in a man, but in our values and conclusions after our great confession.

TRUMP WAS THE WRONG GUY. Just a dunce with a silver spoon in his mouth,

And no brains in his cranium. May peace be with you, I’m out!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA

Red Racism, Blue Anger and White Power

We speak English in America, but it’s not British-Oxford English. Our speech is simply American, and the reason we have a different patois is because of a bunch of words on a piece of paper called the Declaration of Independence written in 1776. I grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which has some strange words and arcane ways of speaking. For example, we would urge someone to clean a space by saying, “Red up the room.” It was a bastardization of the old Pennsylvania Dutch, “Make ready the room.”  Then there’s the wonderful Pittsburgh word “gumband,” better known as a rubber band.

I have been accused of saying some stupid things, and my response was always, “Hey, I’m from Pittsburgh,” which was like saying, “Don’t mind me, we are all stupid.” Perhaps that’s not the best foot forward when trying to seem like you aren’t dumb.

In Pittsburgh, Black people, or as my father called anyone of African American roots “colored people,” lived in a neighborhood called “The Hill District.” When the city was young, many Jewish merchants had shops in this section of town. As the neighborhood changed, those of the Jewish faith moved further east to a place called Squirrel Hill. Today, those neighborhoods are remarkably the same as they were when I lived there fifty years ago.

I grew up in a totally white suburban town named Brentwood, and I believe this stunted my understanding about race and America. Once I got to college, I was exposed to a whole new world. In my everyday life I was engaging with African Americans, and it was rewarding. I was never afraid or against anyone of that race, but I was not at all knowledgeable about the “black experience” in America back then. I knew we were different, but I never viewed that as limiting. I thought it was just another life lesson.

One of my good friends in college was a guy named Ron Chavis. I always enjoyed being with him and, incidentally, he was African American. Ron was probably one of my first Black friends and we have been lifelong buddies ever since. One day, I was walking past a bus stop where Ronnie was waiting for the bus. Next to him was an older white woman. We exchanged greetings and then Ron said, “Hey, brother, I want you to meet my mother.” I’m sure I must have looked surprised because I thought he was fooling around, but it was indeed his mother. My small, little 19-year old mind couldn’t comprehend that since Ronnie was a Black man, how could he have a white mother. There was my first confrontation with my own baked in racism that was seeded by ignorance. Another lesson learned.

In the early 60s, a comedian named Lenny Bruce was the first real “shock jock” of the standup stage and his act made us aware that words are just words. His liberal approach to language led to many arrests of the funny man, and his persecution was more than a complex. While he was appealing a four-month sentence for a charge of obscenity, Bruce turned to heroin, a common drug with jazz musicians and actors in that era, and that drug killed him. The charges were eventually dropped. Lenny Bruce confronted many societal norms like sex and religion. One of his favorite lines was, “Every day, people are straying away from the church and going back to God.”  I can’t imagine what Lenny would have done with the Black Lives Matter movement, but I can envision him making fun of it and urging the brothers to get guns and kill the motherfuckers.

As a 4th of July gift of sorts, I got an email that urged me to forward it to ten friends. The opening written by someone I don’t know who was trying to explain how white people are being unjustly accused of racism in America. He included the transcript of the standup routine that Michael Richards did that got him banned from show business. In case you forgot, Richards played Cosmo Kramer for eleven years on Seinfeld. The racist rant “Kramer” tried to pull off was said to be a reaction to people coming late into the venue in 2006. I believe the reason Lenny Bruce “got away with” his language was his clever, intellectual way of writing. In short, Richards is no Lenny Bruce and the old maxim should be applied here, If you go over the edge, it’s got to be really funny!

I understand when people are challenged for their beliefs and undertones of actions and language. I do not like it when an African American in power attempts to put down their workers by accusing them of “white privilege.” Now before you get your underpants in a knot, you should know the meaning of RACISM. It’s prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against a person or people based on their membership in a racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized.

So, the color of your skin or membership in a group doesn’t determine how your words and actions are defined and interpreted by others. If I am antagonistic toward, say, the AMISH, I could be a racist. They are Caucasian, and I am a white man, but in this example, I would be a racist. We must learn what the words mean before we define ourselves. One person can never know what is in someone else’s heart. My mother and father didn’t believe they were racist, but they were. I did not judge their ignorance, but I strived to figure out why they thought and spoke in racist ways. Why did they teach me so much about the Bible and our fabulous democracy, but never instilled a loving attitude toward people of other cultures or ethnic groups? Maybe it was just a reflection of their parents’ beliefs.

I bristle when I hear people going overboard and reacting defensively in racial discussions, especially when the word racism bothers them. I can hear a subtle hint of white privilege in what they are saying but they don’t even realize they have a chip on their shoulder. When a white lady pulled a gun on a Black lady at a restaurant recently, the video revealed she yelled, “White people are not racists.” I laughed and thought, wow, she knows every white person in America?

I’ve lived in the south for half my life and if you asked many of my neighbors over the years, “Which race is smarter, White, Black or Asian?” Lots of these God fearing, church going folk would say, “Asians are smart.” WHY? Why would they say this about Asian Americans but not AFRICAN AMERICANS? It’s not a trick; it’s the ugliness of RACISM.

We should be all working together to cure our abundance of boiling anger and hate. Our country is 244 years old today and I love AMERICA. I love our freedoms and our system of government, even when it’s stained by partisan bullshit and lies. If you give the people the truth, they will do the right thing.

We are different. We don’t look alike, but that is not a weakness, it’s a strength. We are white, African Americans are black and ah, … what color is an Asian? If yellow popped into your head, it is dripping with the RACISM you didn’t even know you have. I am not asking you to agree with me, I am asking you to think about who you are as a person.

American greatness will be judged by what we do next, not continually justifying the sins of our past. For those who have no slaves in their family trees, you will never understand the grievances, fear and anger of those amongst us. They don’t want to look at the confederate monuments and flags. It hurts them.

Excuse my freedom of speech here, but you should fucking know what those colors really stand for in our flag. Historians say, RED symbolizes hardiness and valor (some say blood shed for our freedom), WHITE suggests our purity and innocence (newborns don’t know prejudice) and BLUE represents vigilance, perseverance and justice. And those are the only colors you need to focus on today.

COVID, COWARDS & CANARDS

The Trump Legacy: State Induced Stupidity

As we enter the fifth month of this terrible global pandemic, it’s probably a good time for some perspective. The world was introduced to its first pandemic, the Bubonic plague, in the sixth century. She never really went away, and she keeps coming back.

It took the stable geniuses back then more than a thousand years to figure out that fleas travelling on the bodies of rats on ships was the source of the disease. The disease affected the lymphatic system of humans who were bitten by an infected flea. We didn’t discover a cure for the plague until 1947, meaning it was almost 1400 years until we got a vaccine. So, are we smarter now or not?

If someone back in the sixth century knew that by killing every rat in the world, they could have saved lives, I am sure they would have done the right thing. Science constantly brings us new knowledge. The virus that brought us the plague, yersinia pestis, was recently found in archaeological digs that are more than 6,000 years old. Not all viruses or cancers are products of the here and now, sometimes they have been around for years.

There are people in America who think that if you don’t test for COVID-19 it doesn’t exist. The President doesn’t take the virus seriously because he’s never felt any pain. The folks in the sixth century weren’t that lucky. More than 25 million people died and when the “Black Death” returned two hundred years later it killed more than 50 million. I guess whoever the 1937 version of “Dr. Fauci” was, didn’t know much. There are some who believe a third of the world’s population perished when the virus came back. It was still around when William Shakespeare was born in 1564, and the plague could have killed that true genius just because the world was dumb about science.

So, here we are in today’s America. Hardly anyone believes that the global pandemic is a hoax. Many of us know someone who has been gravely, or at least incidentally, affected by COVID-19. Sadly, there are some people in powerful positions who have avoided the truth and disseminated misinformation that hurt the citizens of this country. The canards they have transmitted are just as ridiculous as what people in the fifteen-century believed. Could the Lieutenant Governor of the state of Texas be a time traveler from 550 A.D? FINALLY, the Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, announced a protective mask mandate. Maybe someone in Texas is thinking.

Back in the day, some people thought the plague was a punishment from God, while others were quick to blame foreigners or those who followed a different religion. They believed these “bad actors” had poisoned the wells to make the plague come to life. There were those who said that bad air was responsible, while still others figured the position of the planets was the fundamental cause. Boy, that sounds like what the internet is saying about the coronavirus. When people get up before a city council and claim they will die if they wear a mask, maybe we should throw them in the river and see if they float.

This latest global pandemic has wiped out more than one half million humans on the Earth, and more than 128,000 in the United States. It’s not the bubonic plague but animals are again involved. Many believe that flying rats, or what we call bats, carried the virus and infected humans with it. Even though we know where it came from, we still must figure out how to kill it.

Head Cheerleader Donald Trump has said a vaccine is going to be here soon. That isn’t such a good bet. Just as the White House has been touting how good things are and demanding we reopen the economy, there is a report that a swine flu has reared its ugly head in China. Great, two pandemics no waiting, and the usual winter flu will soon be hitting. We already have a good idea for battling COVID-19. All we need to do is maintain social distance, wash our hands and wear masks whenever we are in public, but a lot of people ignore those suggestions.

The Lone Stranger

Politicians are afraid to demand that everyone must wear a mask. Why? Because Trump set them up. Since the beginning of this pandemic our President failed on the messaging. Trump is a coward and every one of his little puppet governors are chicken shits. Why can’t they just go on TV and sternly say, “Wear a mask for the rest of the summer so we can get this under control.” When things matter the most, Trump hits the golf course. His renunciations of expert medical advice and lack of leadership is swelling dissent on both sides. We need to get our schools open and the economy up and running, but we cannot force more virus onto the population of America while doing so. It’s obvious that those premature openings in many states, with or without Republican governors, was a bad idea. More people will die because our leaders feared Trump more than the virus.

This state induced stupidity stems from the fact that science has been Trump’s whipping boy his entire life. Logic and reason are not part of his DNA and we can prove this by examining what his kids say in public. Sadly, this gene misalignment has been inherited and it wouldn’t matter to us if Trump was NOT president. I’m not sure if the family would commit to the slogan STUPID PEOPLE MATTER, but they are halfway there.

Trump doesn’t believe in anything he hasn’t believed in from the beginning. He’s an empty man of no growth, no learning and no leadership. If Trump were the all-powerful leader during the time of the plague, he would have executed anyone suggesting that boats were bringing in the virus. He would have complained that we cannot stop commerce and trade because it would make him look bad. How many people does Orange Boy think he can kill and still get elected?

Yesterday, in a slight walk back, Trump said he has no problem wearing a mask because he thinks it makes him look like the Lone Ranger, and he likes that. Here’s the backstory of the fictional Lone Ranger. As the story goes, this former Texas Ranger’s real name was John Reid and he was the sole survivor of a group of Rangers who were thought to have been killed in ambush by a gang of bad guys. He wore a mask to conceal his identity so he could clandestinely travel through the West fighting for law and order. Trump’s version of this fantasy would definitely not include a native American sidekick, but we should endorse whatever it takes for him to reverse his anti-mask positioning. He knows HE WAS WRONG and that he hurt people.

We don’t need him to apologize, but it might help if he called all the governors and demand they mandate masks in their states. I am sure the Donald talks to himself when in his bedroom late at night and all alone. Maybe he says, “I was wrong. What should I do?” Trump’s doubt summons the ghost of his late attorney, Roy Cohn, who whispers in his ear, “Never admit anything, never apologize, never back down.” Next, he turns on Fox News and they assure him he is right about everything. What a seriously infected COWARD!

DO WE NEED MONUMENTS?

The Confederate President Trump

For those of us who love historical studies and focus on the American story, there is much to be learned from the Civil War and the presidency of Abraham Lincoln. However, one must read to gain that knowledge, or at least watch these fantastic documentaries: Unforgiveable Blackness, The Civil War and The Address by Ken Burns. And while you’re enjoying those fine works of Mr. Burns, check out The Central Park Five. It’s more relevant now, than ever.

Let’s examine the beginning of human beings’ affection for monuments and statues. The emperors of ancient Rome loved to honor their own heroic deeds by erecting statues of themselves around the city. Why did they do that? Well, to remind those they ruled about their power. Roman sculpture was modeled after statues in ancient Greece, so once again the Greeks get credit for the concept.

In 1866, Congress issued an act prohibiting any living person being portrayed on American currency. Our Founding Fathers believed it was unpatriotic to place a living person’s likenesses on circulated money. It could be this concept was biblically inspired under the heading of graven images. America holds the belief that there must be some distance between the living and the legends. For example, the baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown cannot nominate a player until they have been out of the game for five years. It’s sewn into our common value system.

I am a northerner by birth, but I’ve lived almost half my life in the south. I get the big-deal importance of the Civil War, especially when witnessing Southerners and their elaborate war reenactments at Stone Mountain in Atlanta. That park has the largest piece of exposed granite in the world, and carved into that majestic mountainside are huge, high relief sculptures of the most famous Confederates, Jefferson Davis and Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson. I refuse to put the word “president” before Mr. Davis’ name because he was never the president of any country, I’ve ever lived in.

Here’s a good place to mention that when the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) was brought back to life in 1915, members assembled annually at Stone Mountain to participate in things like cross-burnings and other recruitment festivities. It wasn’t until 1960 that Georgia Governor Ernest Vandiver condemned the park and took full control of the property to stop the embarrassing KKK events. I’ll share this ironic side note. When I first visited the site in 1980, they still had two men’s rooms and two women’s rooms in the main building. Yes, those were once used to segregate the visitors by race.

A few miles away, the Atlanta Historical Society runs a Cyclorama where you can see a theatrical display of the battle of Atlanta. It’s very well done, and I recommend it to anyone who loves history. There is a deep need for old family southerners to believe that the Civil War was a political conflict about state’s rights. Well, that’s true, but not true. To say it correctly, the southern states wanted to keep free slave labor in their farms and plantations, while the northern states wanted to end slavery. Let’s not sugarcoat it; the south wanted their sugar cane harvested and were willing to fight for it.

As a kid, I looked up at the anatomically exaggerated statues and wondered if they really were that big or were the creators of the works just trying pay homage to them. Whatever those giant men did was not revealed unless the plaque fastened to the statue’s pedestal told a story. Even then, the words could be twisted and arranged in ways that none of the bad things would ever be known. If the person whose likeness is carved into a statue owned a slave, many today would condemn the monument to death.

I was highly disappointed and depressed to read the 1801 Last Will and Testament of my ancestor Thomas Douglas, in which he ceded his “negro wench” Hannah to his wife Susanne. Shocking, given that all my relatives on that side of the family were devout Scottish Presbyterians, but then, so was President Tommy “Woodrow” Wilson who left office in 1921. That was sixty years after the Civil War, and most historians claim Wilson did not consider the races fundamentally equal and had no intention of aligning them under the law. The more you read about him, the more you understand that he was a racist. Not only was the KKK becoming politically active and vocal during that era, but southern American towns decided to “honor” those Confederates by putting up statues. It was a distasteful burp of racism in the mouths of those who decided to rewrite history using statues to make the actions of those traitors look more acceptable. It was all a giant lie and bold endeavor of face-saving.

The Black Lives Matter movement is an attempt to unwrite the rewrite, and the statues beg the question, “Why do we need them?” What I am about to say may be greeted with anger, but those large masses of bronze and stone are nothing more than Americans trying to imitate Europe. Visit France and you will see statues in many parks, sidewalks and on all the bridges. The obsession with these “works of art” can be traced back to Napoleon, the self-titled Emperor of the liberated France. It’s funny to me that the people revolted and killed the King and Queen, then they put Napoleon in charge who decided he was an Emperor and up went the statues.

Statues are un-American and demonstrate a gaudy commercialism of our values. We use them to promote Bob’s Big Boy hamburgers and to commemorate Presidents, Generals and slave owners. I am sure there is no statue of my immigrant great, great, great, great, great grandfather, Thomas Douglas. He was a slave owner, but he’s still my relative. I could dismiss the issue by saying, he didn’t know better, or that he was just following the laws and culture of the time. I want to believe deep down inside that he treated Hannah fairly and never inflicted any demonic pain or punishment on her, but I don’t know what really happened.

This would be a great time to ask Donald Trump who he is protecting with his rage against the purge of Confederate statues. His executive order tough-talking against those who are tearing the statues down is extremely inappropriate. Trump said, “They’re tearing down statues, desecrating monuments, and purging dissenters. It’s not the behavior of a peaceful political movement; it’s the behavior of totalitarians and tyrants and people that don’t love our country.” He wants those who deface or destroy these statues to be put in jail for ten years. Really? If he were a real president and patriot, he would convene a council to determine which ones stay and which ones go. Donald Trump is a walking monument to lies and deceit, and his aggressive language is stoking the radicals into destruction. It’s interesting how he always does the wrong thing when it comes to global and local politics. He’s a complete and utter failure. We should forge a large statue of the fat, orange man and when the monument is finished erect it here.

BOUNTY HUNTERS

Trump’s Treasonous Disregard

Aren’t you a little sick about being sick about sick people being so sick? I am not talking about the virus. I’m thoroughly pissed off with our government’s lack of respect for science, truth and reason. What America needs right now is a real leader, not another fake tweet, another bombastic rally performance or lots of orange makeup on the shirt collar of a fatso. Real leaders don’t wear makeup and the leader of the free world should protect his troops.

Application Error

The more we learn the more we realize that America is broken right now, and the guy in the White House is 87% of the problem. The other 13% is made up of the foolish people who have taken up with the false prophet. See it now, do you? Where the fuck have YOU been? Let’s get down to the nitty-gritty. (see Pew Research graphic)

Once again, Donald John Trump has put America, its citizens and our military in harm’s way. According to the New York Times, “Interrogations of militants and criminals in Afghanistan were the basis for the U.S. intelligence assessment that Russia offered money for successful attacks on coalition troops last year.”

The Associated Press reported that “suspicions about Russia deepened when members of the elite Naval Special Warfare Development Group, known to the public as SEAL Team 6, raided a Taliban outpost and recovered roughly $500,000 in early 2020.”

Why would Russia do this to Donald Trump? Well, because they could, and they will keep doing evil things, basking in the knowledge that our president will not push back. Here’s the most important question. If Trump knew, what did he do about it? If he didn’t know, was it because his intelligence team didn’t alert him or did he just ignore the data? The White House reaction to this news has been vague, defensive and murky. First, Trump said he didn’t know. Then, he said, his aides told him but there was some disagreement on the validity of the data. What will come tomorrow? Perhaps knowledge without action?

On January 22, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson addressed the Senate and used the phrase, “…peace without victory” while attempting to talk Congress out of World War I involvement in Europe. The idea that the United States was so powerful that President Wilson could just wish away the war is much like Donald Trump being naïve about the essence of Putin and Xi. They are fierce competitors who will do terrible things to us. Russia wasted tons of money on a ten-year war in Afghanistan, so they would like to see us fail there. Offering a bounty to the Taliban to kill Americans is exactly what Iran does with their proxies.

Donald Trump is a lot like Woodrow Wilson, only with a larger waist size and much lower IQ. Both have a kind of closet racism that they probably justify with some kind of fake anthropological analysis. That is why Princeton University is taking old Woodrow’s name off everything in sight.

Making America Great?

There is no such thing as “peace without victory.” If you don’t fight and win then you have no voice in post-war matters. Donald Trump constantly touts his deal making, especially when it comes to questions from the press about how he handles leaders around the world. According to CTV (Canada) “By far the greatest number of Trump’s telephone discussions with an individual head of state were with Erdogan, who sometimes phoned the White House at least twice a week and was put through directly to the President on standing orders from Trump.” Why does Trump spend so much time with Putin and Erdogan when our allies are feeling more and more like they don’t matter? The Donald has pushed away the nations once friendly to us and brought our adversaries closer. I wonder if he calls people who have relationships with Putin to find out what that Russian thug thinks of him? Could he be the Manchurian president?

It’s a damn serious problem if the President of the United States doesn’t read or can’t comprehend his daily intelligence briefings. The words “verified” and “corroborated” are used as a smoke screen to block Congress from the truth. The intelligence was delivered to Trump, and it’s amazing that he ordered statements from his people to make him look better in this damaging story.

According to the TheHill.com, “Top U.S. intelligence officials released statements Monday criticizing leaks to the media as the Trump administration continues to defend against allegations that it knew Russia had offered bounties to incentivize Taliban-linked militants to kill coalition troops in Afghanistan. CIA Director Gina Haspel and Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe released similar statements Monday night slamming leaks as detrimental to intelligence investigations.” This is like three suspects in the back of a police vehicle scheming to get their stories “straight.”

We love to know what is going on. It’s one of the great things about America, love us or leave us. Republican Oklahoma Senator Jim Inhofe was quoted in the Washington Post,  “We’ve known for a long time that Putin is a thug and a murderer, and if the allegations reported in the New York Times are true, I will work with President Trump on a strong response. My number one priority is the safety of our troops.” Sorry to be rude, Jim, but isn’t that what Trump should be saying? We hope that Democrats and Republicans will join to confront the president but given recent events perhaps we shouldn’t hold our breath.

Maybe I am being unfair to Trump, but a voice in my head keeps asking what is truly going on? It’s my father’s voice. He knows what it was like to fight in France and Germany during World War II. He’s asking why the President of the United States didn’t do everything he could, anything, to protect our troops. He wants to know why America seems to disbelieve the Commander in Chief. Trump needs to be held accountable, then he needs to get the hell out of the way. We can beat the virus, bring back the economy and restore America’s rightful leadership position in the world, but we cannot do those things with Trump.

THE WHEELS ARE COMING OFF

Trump and Pence Must Go Away

A song came into my head when I woke up today. The noir refrain of Bullet with Butterfly Wings by the Smashing Pumpkins brought me to the computer keyboard. It’s a great metaphor for where we find ourselves right now. The bullet is the COVID-19 virus. The butterfly wings are the camouflage of misinformation and unreasonable goals for the economy coming from the Trump administration. The lyrics of song cut deeply, “The world is a vampire, sent to drain, secret destroyers, hold you up to the flames, And what do I get, for my pain? Betrayed desires, and a piece of the game.” Who is the vampire sucking the life out of America?

Smashing Pumpkins

As we watch events unfold, it certainly seems like our President is playing a game in which the health of American citizens is far less important that his reelection. Happily, the wheels are falling off the Trump truck of fallacies, and people are now asking relevant questions. They WANT to know the facts. It’s Trump’s fault that people are not wearing masks and Vice President Mike Pence is an evil enabler and damaging distributor of lies. These people are hurting America. Why not put a doctor in the position or maybe a nurse, perhaps a social worker or even an intelligent eight-year-old child?

The President of the United States ignored the advice of medical, scientific and virologic experts by forcing a reopening of the economy before the country was ready. He took the position that a “few people” dying is okay. Trump reads Richard Nixon’s playbook and spouts rhetoric about protesters, Antifa and other imagery ghosts, but the average Joe and Jolene just want to pay their bills, send their kids back to school and return to work.

Trump would rather kill more Americans than seriously deal with the stark health aspects of the global pandemic, which has shown the world how weak the infrastructure of our healthcare system. This lyric of the Smashing Pumpkin’s song gives us more doubt than hope, “Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage, then someone will say what is lost can never be saved.” Donald John Trump cannot be repaired or saved. He should be thrown out like a swollen bag of stinking garbage. The Donald is the rat in a cage, and he is asking you to crawl right in there with him. When the cheese runs out, he will fucking eat you. Our rage is good, but what is the action to rid ourselves of this evil.

Mike Pence lies repeatedly, and the press gives him too much undeserved respect. The press needs to call out them and their LIES every time they occur. The administration might consider the media rude and thrown them off the island of the Washington correspondence club, but its time reporters study the Mike Wallace’s and Dan Rather’s of the past. Media must diligently confront the priggery and trick them into telling the truth.

Our President doesn’t merit respect. He’s a dolt, unable to do anything more complicated than arranging the paper currency in his wallet. While more and more people are dying, Trump wants us to go out and play in this COVID world without protection, why?

His statement that we would have lost millions more US lives sounds like the old baseball player talking about the big game, “Hey if I didn’t hit that eight-inning homerun the score would’ve been worse.” Donald’s teammates are sitting in the dugout, holding their heads and knowing the truth. THEY LOST THE GAME! We currently have the second highest infection rate per one million persons. Brazil is currently #1 but that country, believe it or not. has a leader who is stupider than Trump.

Bragging about your individual achievements while things are getting worse doesn’t comfort the family at the cemetery throwing dirt on their dead loved one’s casket. Trump’s lack of empathy and continual put down of those who give sound advice is more than astonishing, it’s demonic.

Old Woman Trump

Donald Trump loves to kick a man when he is down. There will be only one to blame when those poor, naïve people who attended the unnecessary MAGA rallies come down with the coronavirus, Donald Trump.

Remember how Trump put down John McCain? “He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured!” Well then, people of America, see where you stand. You have been captured by a virus and the orange baboon in the White House considers you nothing but collateral damage in his quest for power. That creature hears no voices unless they aren’t praising him. His staff tries to cover for him by saying he was joking or being sarcastic, but then his reply is, “I don’t kid.” This administration is a bucketful of lies.

It’s not one wheel that has fallen off the bus; all four are gone and our leader left the spare in the garage. Even as it unfolded in plain view, Trump didn’t believe something bad was happening. His lack of preparation is obvious. Life is not an adlib, Mr. Trump, it’s a well-defined structure with a beginning, middle and end. Trump’s toxic presidency must come to an end. NOW!

TRUMP SHOUTING WHISPERS

What the hell is White Power?

Us Americans love a strong marketing hook, but clichés and slogans can’t beat a virus. Donald Trump’s ego has been pumped up by the pundits and talking heads on TV saying how well he hypes and teases what is coming next. To them, everything is a “reveal.” They mention his reality TV roots and his alleged instruction to his White House team to think of every day as another episode of a show. Well we hear that, but this ain’t no television show.

It wasn’t surprising to hear the screams when “our” President retweeted a video originating here in Florida at a retirement community known as The Villages. 123,000 people live there, the same number of COVID-19 dead American bodies. At the start of the global pandemic, TV stations took their cameras to this small city of retirees who were highly vocal about the virus. Echoing their hero, they said it was a “hoax.” The University of Florida did a research project and went into the community to administer free coronavirus tests. We didn’t hear the results of either, but The Villages population is obviously hyper conservative and pro-Trump. The video was a stupid golf cart parade celebrating Trump’s birthday (June 14) and all the vehicles were decked out with Trump signs. One of the locals can be seen pumping his fist while chanting “White Power! White Power!”

After Trump’s retweet hit the internet, liberals and the cable news networks, well, all but one, highly criticized Donald Trump’s repost of the video. Tim Scott, the only African American member of the Senate was quick to decry the action of the President, but Trump took his good old time taking it down. Here are two important questions. 1. How did that video get past the Twitter censors? 2. Why is the President retweeting things that aren’t vetted? He said he never heard the yelled words “White Power!” in the video. Really? So, he’s fucking deaf?

Twitter, like all the other social media platforms, is utterly inconsistent in the way they handle matters of hate, truth, and violence. Twitter banned me for life, claiming I “interrupted conversations.” Excuse my ADD, but why wasn’t a pro-Trump video, featuring a shouted, racially insensitive slogan removed from Twitter? Do they adjust their censorship policy based on the person posting? I use the word “censorship” because that is precisely what it is. Several stories have been written by credible writers saying that Facebook and Twitter executives met with Trump face-to-face and then adjusted their policies to suit him. We have always known these platforms are money whores, but now they seem like political whores as well. Can I say that? Well, I just did.

The Village People

Let me return now to the stupid things people say. There are two hallmarks of our Trumpean dystopia. One is the automatic acceptance by some of the blatant lies continuously blasted from that unnaturally small-sized presidential pie-hole. The other is the incredible amount of meaningless or hijacked words in the “newspeak dictionary.” I’m hearing the term “unprecedented” so much that I am beginning to wonder if something can be precedented. Then there’s the distraction of claims about Obama doing this or that. What a mindless trick! Most of what the far right says about what happened during Obama’s eight-year term are blatant lies.

Mike Pence stood in front of the press and said the White House refusal to demand or decree that everyone must wear a mask has something to do with the First Amendment. I’m calling BULLSHIT. I can’t smoke a cigarette in some public places due to laws concerning public health. Tell me how these words in any way relate to public health, “…the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances,” Mike Pence and other lunatics like him in this administration don’t know how important the word, “peaceably” is to us.

So, WHAT THE HELL IS WHITE POWER? If you are just lightly aware of American history, you know that for hundreds of years citizens could not vote unless they were white, male and a landowner. White men have long enjoyed the unconditional and unchallenged right to rule. When an old man chants “white power” while riding his $4,000 golf cart, and a sitting president blasts the video of that to more than 80 million people, something is grossly wrong. One might defend this racist stupidity as tongue-in-cheek, but are we totally unaware of the uprising against police brutality and unnecessary death following the violent acts against people of color by law enforcement? Do we need to be reminded that The Villages love Trump, while 125,000 people are dead because of a virus in our country?

This is the big story people!

News broke over the weekend that the Russian government was allegedly paying the Taliban to kill US troops. Was that a clue that maybe someone wanted us to talk about WHITE POWER? If Trump knew about this and didn’t confront his buddy Putin, or take action to protect our soldiers in Afghanistan, he would be guilty of treason, the crime of betraying one’s country, especially by attempting to kill the sovereign or overthrow the government. If the president knew this as fact and did nothing, he put our men and women in danger. Some say as many as twenty soldiers were killed since this report was ignored by Trump.

Orange Boy will probably say he never saw the report or that intelligence couldn’t confirm it. Okay, but the deeper question is, WHO WILL YOU FIRE FOR NOT RAISING THIS MORE FORCEFULLY? It’s time to get serious, folks. We need a Congressional hearing ASAP. Maybe the hearing could take place in the whitest chamber, the Senate. Let’s put the power of all those old white guys to use for a constructive purpose.

Consider these words, “Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000.” If Trump did not act on this intelligence, he was giving “aid and comfort” to not only the Taliban, but to Russia as well. Why do all of Trump’s roads lead to Russia?

TORTURE OF DONALD TRUMP

When do we get to tear down his statue?

Torture is the action or practice of inflicting severe pain on someone as a punishment or to force them to do or say something for the pleasure of the person inflicting the pain. Some in Congress permit Trump to bully and torture them because they fear he will scream at them on Twitter and work against their reelection if they push back. The President can inflict pain on any city or state by withholding Federal funds. He can urge his boy, Bill Barr, to go after a state legally with unnecessary lawsuits and decrees. Barr can withhold tax dollars to any police department or state police force. This needs to change.

When it comes to the health and welfare of the citizens of this country, Trump is working behind the scenes to, at best, downplay or, at worst, to sabotage the fight against COVID-19. His administration asked the Supreme Court to strike down Obamacare today, you know, to hurt all the people who signed up after they lost their employer-based healthcare insurance. Trump is claiming Presidential immunity to wearing a mask, alleging he doesn’t have to wear a mask because those around him are tested. His words form an assumption that the only way to stay safe at work would be daily checks of all your co-workers to know their medical status. The lies and misinformation that Trump and his press secretary put out daily could fertilize an acre of tomato plants, if only that bullshit could be bagged.

Donald Trump may say that he wants to reform the police in America, but that is not true, not true at all.  Every time Trump speaks about the police he praises, protects and complements them. Trump is fond of police unions but decries those in labor who have come out against him. Trump thinks he has the privilege of picking winners and putting his knee on the neck of unions, groups, movements or policy makers he doesn’t like. This president does not acknowledge the right of people to peaceably assemble and petition the government for a redress of grievance. His only wish about them is they will go away.

Donald Trump feels he’s invincible and genuinely believes the people who don’t wear masks are FOR HIM and those who do wear masks are AGAINST HIM. What a small uninformed, retarded brain. This paranoia and stupidity beg an answer to one question, “Does Donald John Trump care about anyone other than himself?”

John Bolton is making the rounds pumping up interest in his new book, but his sharp Baltimorean accent isn’t an excuse for his lack of logic and denial that his testimony would not have mattered during the Senate impeachment trial against Trump. We’re getting tired of the routine where Trump hires someone, tells America how great they are, then fires them after a couple of years or less, then hearing the ousted person tell us how bad Trump is as a president. Their self-absorbed personalities and brain functions are void of any real patriotic vision.

I wrote a book three years ago about Donald Trump, and while researching I read many hatchet jobs against the President. I took the common threads and patched together a timeline and story, which provided an excellent picture of who Trump is and how he operates. The boisterous, large, orange buffoon doesn’t read, cannot concentrate on important details and is motivated only by his personal gain. He cares not for you, not for me and not for our country or even his political party. He could care less about Republicans, conservatives or evangelicals. He simply craves hearing the applause and the praise of those who adore him.

As we end another week, there are more than 124,000 Americas dead from the COVID-19 virus and more than 47 million Americans have filed unemployment claims in the last 14 weeks. The states that were pushed to open early by Trump are now suffering huge surges in cases, hospitalizations and, sadly, more death.

In my remaining time on this planet, I will protest any city, state or community that wants to erect a statue of Donald Trump. This man has aligned himself against most Americans who would like to see the symbols of slavery and hate be taken away. I refuse to be tortured by Donald Trump’s stupidity, corruption and disregard of norms. Should some place in the US feel so moved to erect a statue of the Donald, I hope my grandkids will pull it down and destroy it. I have a feeling they will do just that.

Trump’s actions cause people pain. To those non-mask-wearers who ventured out to attend one of his rallies because of the foolish influence of the Donald, I hope you don’t get sick. COVID-19 is painful. If one could prove their severe pain was the result of attending an unsafe Trump event, wouldn’t that make him a torturer? Was pain inflicted as a punishment for being too trustful of Trump or was the President of the United States torturing them to do or say something? Finally, I must ask, does Trump find pleasure while inflicting the pain?

All the rally attendees agreed to indemnify Trump and the Campaign corporation from lawsuits should they get sick. By demanding this agreement, the Campaign and the President showed they were aware of the danger at the rallies, but that doesn’t lessen their moral depravity and disregard. There might be a way to prove you caught a virus from a Trump rally, but don’t expect that man to help you with the costs of being sick. Trump’s track record on healthcare for America can be summed up with his own words, “I take no responsibility. You’re on your own.” He doesn’t care about people. Maybe that is what should be on the base of his statue, Here stands a man who didn’t care about people and almost destroyed America for Putin.
