THE RIGHT OVERSIGHT

Trump & Truman, Birds of a Feather?

Why don’t more people compare Harry Truman and Donald Trump? They should because it would provide insight into oversight. Most people don’t go there because Truman was a Democrat and Trump is a “sort of” Republican, but that won’t get in the way of this history lesson.

Harry Truman was not President Roosevelt’s only Vice President. Most younger Americas don’t remember that FDR served eight terms, a loophole that was taken away when the Twenty-Second Amendment said a president may be elected for only two terms with a total of eight years.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd President, had three Vice Presidents. He changed his VPs more often than his boxer shorts, mostly for political reasons. Harry Truman was kind of like FDR’s Mike Pence. He hailed from the Midwest and was more conservative than FDR. His claim to fame before becoming Vice President was running a committee that investigated waste and corruption in the military. He became president when FDR died shortly after being reelected for the eighth time.

Here’s where the comparison between Trump and Truman gets a little scary. President Truman made the decision to drop the atomic bomb on two Japanese cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Some say the two bombings killed as many as 230,000 civilians and they remain the only use of nuclear weapons in the history of armed conflict. Thank God. Truman claimed that dropping the big bomb had saved more than a million US lives by not prolonging a war with Japan. Well, we proved it could work and learned how terribly bad a nuclear weapon truly is.

When Harry Truman was confronted about waging war in Korea without a formal declaration and vote in congress, he allegedly told reporters, “I don’t ask their permission — I just consult them.” Appalled by Truman’s comment, Robert Taft from Ohio proclaimed that Harry Truman was courting a “Constitutional crisis.” Trump may say he’s a deal maker, but he’s just doing what HE THINKS is best. At least Truman took advice.

Like most presidents who have Congressional monkeys on their backs, Truman was not liked by the “other party” in Congress. When Truman fired General Douglas MacArthur for insubordination, the not so fearful General went to Capitol Hill to speak before a joint session of Congress. Many of Truman’s rivals wept openly. They thought MacArthur was infallible. It has been said that Truman was disgusted by the sight of “damn fool Congressmen crying like a bunch of women” after hearing “nothing but a bunch of bullshit!”  The description of Democrats is that they wet their seats when witnessing such emotional loyalty to MacArthur. If Trump gets reelected, Democrats and the nation will need a big box of Depend adult diapers.

When a person hears others saying they are the world’s most powerful person, they start to believe it. Oversight simply becomes an unnecessary burden on their lifestyle and ego. Trump’s similarity to Truman comes in the form of mismanaging crises. Truman used the atomic bomb to end a war but played the Korean conflict like he was walking on eggshells. He also showed the world he was afraid of China and Russia.

Trump is walking away from the fight with the coronavirus like he’s worried about making a mistake. His failed response is only made worse by his inability to know what Americans really need right now, a decisive leader. I question the loyalty to home and flag on the part of those who think Trump’s doing a good job. He’s not.

What makes our situation with the coronavirus even worse is that Trump, like Truman, will leave behind a pile of dung that we will have to clean up. By not using Congress to endorse his war, Truman paved the way for Vietnam, with all its feature creep and death. Presidents Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon believed they didn’t have to consult Congress on war because Truman set a precedent. Trump doesn’t believe he must engage with Congress during a crisis. Where was he all weekend? Playing golf and entertaining rich people.

Trump is unwilling and incapable of enacting an aggressive plan to end this insane attack on the health of Americans. It’s beyond deer in the headlights. The Donald is nothing but roadkill at this point. COVID-19 is his Korean Conflict and Vietnam war rolled into one and the virus has already killed more people than those conflicts.

We must not get too cocky here. Truman’s approval rating was down to 29% at one point and America elected him. Maybe Donald Trump thinks getting the US into a war will help him win another term, but he’s too chicken shit to fight a germ let alone the Chinese or the Russians.

Russia Claims Vaccine

One of the post-COVID cow patties we are going to have to scrap off our collective shoes is a notion of oversight, and it’s going to take smart people in the White House and Congress to pull it off. The old school politics of Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, Mitch McConnell and old goats like Chuck Grassley and the slowly withering Dianne Feinstein are over. On a cautionary note, we don’t need frat boy pranksters like Florida’s First District Representative Matt Gaetz or troublesome formulators of English words like Representative Ilhan Omar. They are trying to make their mark, but they’re trash ideologs who should never be taken too seriously. Watch the HBO documentary called The Swamp and you’ll see why.

Our inspector generals must be better vetted and protected. There are currently 1,600 people working in the 73 offices of US inspectors general. In the beginning we had only 12 offices. What caused the growth? Harry Truman used those offices to investigate fraudulent contracts and financial improprieties in military procurement. Harry was called on the carpet for employing his wife, Bess, in the government. Trump has his family working for the White House, his campaign and the government, while the family skims money by commanding departments to support Trump kingdom’s hotels and services.

Sure, Harry Truman advanced the concept he called the Marshall Plan, which was a US program to provide aid to Western Europe following the devastation of World War II. Those ideas, like NATO, were designed to keep us out of war yet they’re the very things Donald Trump wants to throw away. Dumb.

As many as 34,000 Americans and allied troops died in Korea, and we ended up right where we started, the 38th Parallel. Sure, Truman avoided a war with China and Russia by not letting MacArthur take the whole Korean peninsula, but Truman’s fear of World War III gave us Kim Jong-Un with a nuclear arsenal. Some would say reasonable tradeoff, but our current president has made that worse.

Trump wants to kowtow to Moscow while taking on China. In the nightmare vision pictured in George Orwell’s classic book, 1984, three nations survived an atomic war. There was Oceania, then, Eurasia, and finally Eastasia, and they were not democracies, at all. They were in constant conflict with two ganging up on one. Then, they would switch sides and do the same thing to the new “enemy of the state.”

The three most powerful nations today are the United States, Russia and China. Truman knew more about the world than Trump could ever dream to fathom. China might be a stronger economic force than Russia, but how many nuclear bombs do you need to end the world? Think about all the terrible things that could possibly happen to the United State of America and there’s Trump, stumped by a virus. It’s totally pitiful and embarrassing. Trump with a phone and a Twitter account thinks he’s the big player. They are laughing in Beijing and Moscow and the Donald doesn’t even know it.

NOTE: Read this book, it’s where I am learning a lot about presidents.

REAL ENEMIES IN THE WORLD

Trump’s Troubling Achilles Heel

Donald Trump didn’t fight in the Vietnam war because he claimed to have bone spurs in his feet. Today, as we witness the decay of democracy before our very eyes, we discover Trump’s true weakness, a troubling Achilles Heel. He doesn’t know the difference between an ally and an enemy. This could possibly hurt American interests in many ways, and something must be done.

It has been discussed ad nauseam that there may be an unusual and disturbing relationship between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has said, “All roads lead to Putin” with our President.

The Moscow Project, an initiative of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, issued an update on June 3, 2019 that documented 272 contacts, including at least 38 meetings, between Trump’s team and Russia-linked operatives. None of these contacts were ever reported to the proper authorities. When the Inspector General’s report comes out on Monday, December 9th, 2019, we will learn more about the start of the “Russian thing,” as Trump calls it. Still, many of Trump’s comments and moves indicate a lack of transparency in his dealings with Putin. Why?

Trump’s failure to admit that Russia interfered with the 2016 election fuels the idea that Russia must have something on him. Trump’s repetition of Putin talking points on many foreign policy issues ignites negative emotions in members of the US intelligence community. Their jaws drop and evoke the rhetorical question, “Who’s side is he on?”

Trump looked the other way when the CIA told him that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman (MBS) ordered the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi and that it was the Saudi government who killed him. This callous president admitted he looked the other way because there was a large order for military equipment pending. What will he say when he learns that the active shooter event at a Navy Air Station in Pensacola, Florida was the deed of a Saudi national? So, we sell them jets, they come here to train and then one of them decides to kill our citizens. Who is the enemy here, Mr. Trump?

Trump read the response to the Navy base deaths from King Salman, who said that the attack was “barbaric.” Mohammed Saeed Alshamrami, a Saudi National, allegedly killed our people with a handgun. Whether death by use of a handgun or a bone saw, the Saudi’s moral viewpoint of death has no credibility. Trump did the awkward sword dance, sold a bunch of planes to the Saudis, then looked the other way after multiple murders. Not to mention that it was Saudi pilots trained in Florida who flew planes into New York and Washington, D.C. buildings in 2001. According to the Washington Post, “As of Friday, (12-6-2019) there were 852 Saudis in the United States for Pentagon-sponsored training related to security cooperation.” And this just in, the handgun was purchased legally here in the US by using a loophole in our gun laws.

Let me say this in the most explicit way I can. Trump is trusting the wrong people in the world and it’s getting people killed. Now, Kim Jong-Un, another of Trump’s pals, is threatening to give the United States a “Christmas present.” Why doesn’t someone tell Trump to stop believing his own bullshit! What does it take to convince everyone that Donald Trump is BAD FOR AMERICA!

Trump has decided that anyone who didn’t vote for him, or any person or institution that challenges him, are the “enemy.” He declares that the press is the enemy of the people, a quote from such great “leaders” as the Soviet Union’s Joseph Stalin, who used it to describe anyone critical of himself. The phrase has been routinely used by authoritarian rulers as well as Donald Trump. Who would ever want to be associated with Stalin?

Trump demonizes people with his snarky and libelous tweets. Does he feel above reproach because of his position? Does he not understand that after leaving the office of the presidency he could face courts for defamation, slander and corrupt intent? He is not immune.

Russia doesn’t want our way of life to shine. Putin detests the spread of democracy fearing that one day he could be rejected and thrown out of office. MBS and his King father will kiss Donald Trump’s fat ass to get what they want, knowing the Orange One will never hold their feet to the fire. It’s sad to say that our president is a coward when it comes to Russia, North Korea, China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and, yes, the NRA.

Trump has done nothing to make America safer from mass shooters, neo-Nazis, radical white supremist groups and homegrown terrorists. He freezes during the most tragic times. He works harder at placing blame and fabricating scapegoats than analyzing problems through solution-based logic. He speaks then retreats, listening to the sycophants. He has a perverted concept of friends and enemies, and his actions are based solely on whether he thinks someone likes him. What a fucking asinine fool.

The President of the United States must keep America safe. He or she must bring certain clarity to the job and make sure trusted advisors are heard. Without such vision and trust we have an obese old guy talking dirty shit-lies. Donald Trump is so stupid that he doesn’t understand how bad people are manipulating him. Rudy Giuliani is a bad person. Vladimir Putin is a bad person. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is a bad person. Making matters worse, most of the people left in Dickhead Donald’s administration are spineless yes men with no moral grounding or intelligence. You know it’s bad when a liberal like me is saying I wish John Bolton was still around the White House. It’s a dim time in America. Impeachment is fine, but a landslide election defeating Donald Trump would be the best outcome for our republic.

RICK PERRY & THE BIBLE

The Ultimate Corruption of Christianity

Maybe I went to different Sunday school classes than Rick Perry, but he certainly caught my attention with this expression of his opinion. Perry said in a recent interview that he believes that President Donald Trump was “chosen” by God to lead America at this point in history. Okay, I get it. If God oversees everything then, of course, he was the deity that made sure the electoral college put the Donald in charge of the United States of America. Now call me a doubting Thomas, but I just don’t buy it. Did God appear to Rick Perry to directly deliver this big news?

I happen to hold a very strong belief that God is not involved in politics. To say that God has any power of intervention and control over elections would mean that he/she/it would have helped the German populace elect Adolf Hitler. God is not now and never has been in the election business. There are not chosen people or countries or religions or clubs or parties; there are only people. People who are born, eat, shit, sleep, work, pay taxes and then die. No royal from the history of the world is still alive, which is fairly good evidence that no man is above the law or chosen by God.

The current corruption of Christianity is not unique in world history. Religions and churches have been coopted by leaders, popes and politicians since the beginning of beliefs and organized religion. The Crusades are one example of the church being hi-jacked by politics and choosing to do the wrong thing. Experts claim that there were as many as 1.7 million people killed during the Crusades. How did religious people justify death to forward their dogma?

Rick Perry went on to babble, “God’s used imperfect people all through history. King David wasn’t perfect. Saul wasn’t perfect. Solomon wasn’t perfect. And I actually gave the president a little one-pager on those Old Testament kings about a month ago. I said, ‘Mr. President, I know there are people that say you said you were the chosen one and I said, ‘You were.’” He also added, “I said, ‘If you’re a believing Christian, you understand God’s plan for the people who rule and judge over us on this planet in our government.”

As they should say on TV, how do we unpack this heaping pile of camel shit? If Rick Perry really thinks Trump is a “believing Christian” he wouldn’t have needed to give him a paper on Old Testament kings. The brother would have already been speaking in tongues. And what is the origin of the revelation that Trump was chosen by God for anything? How did hard-working, God fearing evangelicals get sucked into this strange idea that we should look beyond the flaws and imperfections of Donald Trump and pronounce a savior status on his head?

I think I got it, and my next statement isn’t going to go down very easily with the 1.2 billion people who call themselves Catholic, but here goes. The ultimate corruption of the church took place here in America and around the world right under the noses of naïve mothers and fathers. For years, young boys and girls were terrorized in their own churches and the hierarchy of the Catholic Church covered it up. This is fact.

There is a common retort from long-term faithful in the church that goes something like this, “I know there were some bad priests, but look at all the good the church has done for so many people.” There it is. The flawed souls and imperfect people have a get-out-jail card that people give institutions and criminals. Jerry Sandusky is in jail for what he did. How many priests were  punished?

Christians of all stripes will tell you that Trump’s lifestyle and language isn’t as important as those Supreme Court justice appointments, the move toward making abortions illegal and his undying support for Israel. Okay, you got those boxes checked my sisters and brothers of the cross, but was the separation of children from their families on your list? Did you overlook the changes to the laws that allowed big business to more easily pollute the world? Did your preacher ignore the tax law that gave the rich more money and hardly helped the middle class? Would Jesus approve?

One might argue you can still support a church, even though some of its authorities sexually abused children. And let me ask you this. Is the binding of Trump’s power to a Godly endorsement the creation of over-eager minds or just people ignoring a few commandments? Do you remember, “you shall have no other gods before me” or “you shall make no idols” or “you shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain” and of course, “you shall not commit adultery.” Even if you are blind to everything Trump has done so far, you certainly must see that he has, indeed, been bearing false witness against his neighbors? He tells multiple lies every day and some of them put real people in harm’s way. Do you get the term “death threat” my holy friends?

As we sit down to Thanksgiving dinner this year, we will all be giving thanks for the many blessings and wonderful things we share in America. I will not be giving thanks for this President, however, because I truly believe he’s not worthy of thanks. He’s a liar living under a blanket of secrets. He claims to be the most transparent president ever, when we cannot even see the skin on his face.

Rick Perry is not very smart, because he’s enabling Trump and his worst instincts. If he truly was a man of God, why would so many people hate him? He’s more than imperfect. He’s so flawed morally and psychologically that the real evil he’s propagated will take years to be discovered. We already have a new generation of neo-Nazis, white supremacists and racists who rally around this man. How do they get along with the Christian evangelicals? Are they both looking the other way?

If Trump buys into this “chosen one” routine, he will believe every action he takes is ordained by the Lord himself. Isn’t that what Kings and Queens and tyrants of every kind believe? God, if you are listening, please straighten out this hot holy mess. Once Christianity gets corrupted, what will stand against tyranny, hate and disorder? We can only pray.

BRIBERY…

With a Steamy Side of Corrupt Intent

Donald Trump either doesn’t understand law or he simply chooses to ignore what is on the books. I’m fairly sure he can be diagnosed as a pathological liar with narcissistic personality disorder. Perhaps in his quiet, alone time he knows that he’s a fraud on many levels, but then he would have to admit that on top of all his other flaws he has a dual personality. But let’s not get too far into the world of science; it’s a world that Trump never visits.

Federal laws define bribery as the practice of offering, giving, receiving, or soliciting something of value for the purpose of influencing the action of an official in discharge of his or her public or legal duties. To put this another way, bribery is used to gain an illicit advantage.

According to USLegal.com, “The General Federal Bribery Statute says that whoever directly or indirectly, corruptly gives, offers or promises anything of value to any public official with intent to influence that person’s official act will be fined for the offence of bribery by an amount not more than three times the monetary equivalent of the thing of value, or imprisonment for not more than fifteen years, or both.  And if convicted, that person would be disqualified from holding any office of honor, trust, or profit under the U.S government.”

It doesn’t say that the person being bribed must be a US official and it also plainly states that a promise of anything of value can be an ingredient in a bribery case. Clearly, almost $400 million in aid is something of value. After reading all the available testimony and transcripts and digesting the diatribes of the President himself, I believe Donald J. Trump is guilty of bribery. It’s time to stop using the phrase “Quid Pro Quo,” just as we no longer talk about “collusion,” a word Trump thought would shield him from the truth in the last investigation.

There is no doubt that Trump had a corrupt intent, and his defense in the form of a denial is pointless. Trump typically denies everything when he’s accused of wrongdoing. In more than 11,000 tweets, President Trump has lied more than 13,000 times. After many initial claims of non-involvement, evidence has proven that he not only had direct knowledge but participated in the corruption.

The laughable plea that he was trying to root out corruption in Ukraine is astonishing. Trump’s trick of trying to destroy Joe Biden as a political rival could possibly work, which would then become more proof that he is a chronically immoral being. Trump himself has corruptly used the Justice Department to carry his water and attempt to discredit the very people in Justice who are charged with defending our country against crime. Those who are complicit will be remembered.

Going after the whistleblower is a gross injustice being perpetrated and encouraged by the President of the United States. This is against the law and surely will be added to the impeachment charges.

The whistleblower protection act states that anyone who comes forward to point out corruption is afforded protections from retaliation such as reduction in pay or hours, denial of overtime or benefits, a suspension that lasts 14 days or more, termination from serving as federal civil employee, demotion to a lower paying position in federal employment or reducing one’s responsibilities. The death threats that the whistleblowers lawyers have been receiving are important to people like Donald Trump and the Napoleonic Senator from Kentucky, Rand Paul. Shame on all who break the law!

Bribery is a thug crime and degrading act. Using it in a scheme to keep aid from a country that could affect the security of this country borders on treason is perilous. It’s time we start using proper terms so that the American public can understand exactly what this president did.

People understood the Black Sox scandal of 1919, when baseball players took bribes to throw a World Series. People understand a late breaking case of bribery, in which three Twitter employees allegedly took bribes to help Saudi Arabia spy on dissidents. People understand the stain on politics when some local politician takes a bribe to help his brother-in-law get a big government contract. BRIBERY is the correct word with respect to Trump. Use it!

A person offering a bribe is guilty of an infraction, as is the person who takes the bribe. The President of Ukraine didn’t take the bribe, but the bribe was discovered. It’s time that we use the law, 18 USCS prec § 201(b) against Donald Trump and his corrupt administration. It’s time that this “law and order President” gets a personal dose of that law and order he swore to defend.

WHO’S YOUR DADDY, BAGHDADI?

The Reason Intelligence Matters

In 2011, businessman Donald Trump felt the need to comment about the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, “Any president sitting there when the generals come in and say we have him, who’s going to say, oh, let’s leave him alone?” Trump was attempting to lessen any credit President Obama might receive for the raid and killing. Trump also complained about it taking so long, an early slap at military intelligence.

President Trump doesn’t understand that the type of decisions all modern presidents had to make, are now his to make. He gets credit for his good moves and, as he knows, he will get harshly slayed by the press, Congress and his critics when things go wrong. Donald Trump has made no friends with his critical personality.

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is a main character in my book If God Could Cry, and I was delighted by his killing. My historical novel portraited the so-called leader of the Caliphate based on the many books and articles I read about him. His location in my book was in northern Syria, quite near where he was finally found. This seemed logical to me when I was writing.

The boogie man Trump attempted to create during his “mission accomplished” Sunday morning presentation to the nation probably made some people feel good, but this line about Baghdadi, “Died like a dog, died like a coward,” might be better for someone doing a movie pitch. It was so un-statesman-like. How can there be joy in the murder of an enemy when the “achievement” included the killing of three innocent children? This gloating is a giant turn-off and it’s just more of the “all about me” attitude that constantly seeps out of Trump like puss.

I have always been skeptical about generalizations because they are often used to put down an entire race, religion or culture. Trump uses a bit of undocumented hearsay or obvious racial tropes to make people doubt groups of people. For example, he said that the Kurds “are no angels,” meaning what? The facts suggest that the Kurds provided the information that helped find Baghdadi. Why are we pushing them away?

Trump is also desperately trying to justify his embrace of Putin and Russia as it pertains to Syria, Turkey, the Kurds and what is happening in that part of the world. He paints his personal relationships with non-democratic demigods as something that will help America. I hate to say it, but Donald J. Trump has now drawn a giant target on himself because he personalized the kill. His overt taking of credit for the operation while shaming the terrorist with his graphic description will cause other terrorists to see Trump as the true “infidel.” I am sure the Donald loves his characterization of the whole thing being like a movie, but movies have endings.

Terrorist movements are not motion pictures. They tend to reconstitute, and the next version is always much more heinous. It’s clear that Donald Trump doesn’t have any idea about how people in that part of the world think. He has no training in or knowledge of foreign policy, and probably couldn’t explain how a parliamentary system works. If only he had followed the advice of those in the government who know that area, he might have stayed in the game to gain long-term stability.

Trump would rather have a friendship with Kim Jong-Un, even if pushes aside the grief and sorrow of a family from Cincinnati who lost their son at the hands of that monster. Otto Warmbier is person who didn’t have to die. Trump doesn’t care about him, though. He got his mileage and has accepted Kim’s denials.

Because of a U.N. investigation and report, we know how Saudi agents plotted to kill and dismember Washington Post reporter Jamal Khashoggi., Trump, however, is more interested in selling weapons to Saudi Arabia. Killing people is okay for Trump if it involves a transaction favorable to him. Trump has accepted the Crown Prince’s denial.

The suggestion that our military will remain in Northern Syria to protect the oil refineries does not mean that Trump will use such military intervention to get the oil of a sovereign nation. The U.N. clearly states, “…in conflict and post-conflict situations, the importance of cooperation in shared responsibility, among source, transit and destination countries in preventing and combating trafficking, illicit trade and illegal exploitation of natural resources.” It would be against international law for us to exploit the resources of any nation. Plus, we really don’t need the oil, according to Trump we have tons of it.

Trump may say he doesn’t respect the United Nations, but he falls all over himself to address that body. He needs to follow the rules in war and conflicts, unless he wants to spend his later years sitting in front of a war tribunal. That’s on him.

The intelligence community and the lifetime experts who work for the federal government are NOT petty people like Trump. They are mission-oriented folks who are totally loyal to the Constitution and the Commander-in-Chief. When difficult times come, Trump needs to turn to those same intelligence people for information that will keep our country safe. When he maligns them on Twitter for political purposes, he not only disrespects those hard-working Americans he stains the presidency. He comes off as trite and burdened by information.

Trump will take the credit for the death of an enemy, but that doesn’t mean he alone can determine who the real enemies are. He needs to stop being so judgmental without facts and evidence. The saddest point concerning the take down of ISIS’ number one man is the glorification of his death could incite “true believers” to do more harm to people who look like us. But then, Trump has all the answers and we hope his guesses work because failure could be terrible for our country. When he’s wrong, we always lose big time.

OLD WAYS VS. NEW IDEAS

The Real Democratic Challenge

There’s something happening here; what it is, is exactly clear. The President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, is concerned only with personal wins and his appearance of strength and power. Rather than focusing on what is best for the country and providing progress for the planet, he lives in a photo-op world.

Russian President Vladimir Putin kills people who write or say negative things about him. It’s quite likely that 21 journalists have been killed since Putin came to power in March of 2000. Kim Jong-Un’s regime arrested, incarcerated and killed American Otto Warmbier because he allegedly removed a political poster from a wall. North Korea has executed more than a dozen of Kim’s rivals, including his half-brother.

Saudi Arabia has slain more than 500 people in the last three years, and every investigation has linked the country’s Crown Prince to the extrajudicial execution of a Washington Post journalist. The CNN headline stated, “Trump says he is ‘extremely angry’ about Khashoggi murder but defends MBS relationship.” The beat goes on and Trump’s transactional personality will not let him challenge countries on human rights and injustices. He simply doesn’t care.

Taking Trump at his word, it’s clear that he feels more comfortable with dictators than allies. He speaks the language of a mobster and has an affinity for those who solve political problems with murder and oppression. If you think the Donald’s equivocations and nonconfrontation of the evil in the world with his throwaway line of “everybody does it,” then you are complicit. When will the evangelicals, moderate republicans and thinking democrats step up and restate the meaning of morality? Trump has desecrated American values both at home and abroad.

Watching twenty Democrats duke it out on stage at the debates last week made it apparent how the great number of candidates has made the process unwieldy, but something popped into my brain that revealed the true challenge. The Democratic party must cope with OLD WAYS vs. NEW IDEAS and stop the personalities from getting in the way of resolving issues.

Our founders used clear logic when they decided that a member of the House of Representatives had to be 25 years or older and a Senator had to be at least 30 years of age. They carried through with the rule that a President must be an American born person of 35 years of age or older. Of note, they never adopted a retirement restriction as some states have for judges. So, was it the idea of maturity that moved the framers to say age matters?

Let’s state some facts here. If elected to a second term, Donald Trump will be 74 years old. Joe Biden would be 77 years old if elected president and Bernie Sanders would be 78 if he won. On inaugural day 2020, Nancy Pelosi will be 80.

Donald Trump isn’t a bad president because he’s old. He’s simply a bad person and thus a horrible president. He’s a divisive hater and pathological liar. Age will never be an accurate determinant of quality of leadership. We learn this lesson every day.

There is evidence that the old ways of doing business gets things done in Congress. When former Vice President Joe Biden was attempting to express his political agility, he was accused of befriending racists. Biden had a horrible night on the debate stage when Senator Kalama Harris confronted his old record on school busing. The “new ways” are about more than busing and racial equality, but this is the price of politics. The old expression of eating its young doesn’t apply. This is more about the young casting out its old.

Some of the newly elected members of the House and presidential contenders are pushing a left-leaning, progressive agenda. Trump will use this against any Democrat running for President. He will paint them as leftist, socialistic and radical. Being the revisionist trying to bring back the past, Trump risks alienating younger voters who didn’t live through the cold war. The conservatives, evangelicals and power-hungry Republicans want to move the whole country back to the 1950s, while young Americans feel that they are owed something.

How do we progress as a nation? When state laws take away things like women’s reproductive rights, those under 35 years of age will see it as the OLD people dictating to the next generation. This glaring gap between right and left is growing. Moderates are silent for now, but they will have to take a side soon. An election is coming.

In a perverted, mind-blowing way, Republicans hail Trump as a change maker. A person who doesn’t do predictable things and is not a typical politician makes them feel good, even when it hurts them personally. As the farmer who got screwed with tons of soybeans that no one wants to buy because of tariffs, could they move their vote to a moderate, Midwest, positive Democrat?

Democrats would be wise to position Trump as old fashioned and wrong on healthcare, instead of bleating layered, detailed plans that dim the common man. The wealth gap is real, but those who are hurt from an unbalanced economy need reasons why the new ways are better than the old. Currently, the polls would have you believe that most Americans don’t want a second Trump term but many people, no matter what party, aren’t yet sure who will get their vote.

THE WALLS ARE CRUMPLING

The Trump Train in Peril

Donald Trump, the titular head of the Republican party, was not able to maintain the majority in the House after the midterm elections, and now he is feeling the pain of investigations coming out of various committees of the House of Representatives. He may be able to veto laws, but he cannot stop the inquiries into his campaign, his inauguration, his presidency and his personal and business lives.

One could feel sorry for the novice politician, but with daily revelations about who he really is, one can see the puzzle pieces of a man who has far fewer morals than those evangelicals who genuflect at his feet. He has displayed demigod-like attitudes and actions toward the institutions of government as well as law and order. It has been reported that he commanded his underlings to ignore security problems with his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and demanded that the Justice Department sue to block the Time-Warner – AT&T merger. Why would he do these things? Well, we have a gangster in the White House who thinks he is above the law and it’s time that Congress does something about it.

Making up emergencies so that he can manipulate the Federal budget should be against the law. Threatening federal witnesses while offering pardons to people to falsify their testimony before Congress and courts is against the law. Where are the keepers of our democracy? Who will step forward to condemn these activities and block the power grab taking place before our very eyes?

On Monday (3-4-2019), House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler announced a sweeping investigation into President Donald Trump’s campaign, businesses, transition and administration. This probe would lay the groundwork for Democrats if they choose to pursue impeachment proceedings against the President. And Trump could have avoided this whole mess by disclosing his income tax returns. They might help us understand why he pals with dictators and to whom he owes favors and money.

Many Americans are getting tired of Trump catering to his base in language, thoughts and deeds. Many people living here truly want a president who can lead us and do great things for America. Trump is not that guy. By dividing the country from the start, he has only emboldened both sides. The far left is more left and the far right has become so extreme that it seems murder is now permitted without rebuke from this president.

The charade we are witnessing is downgrading America in the eyes of other world democracies, while global dictators borrow Trump’s language for their speeches. Antagonizing the free press, spreading conspiracy theories and denigrating law enforcement may be an attempt to distract our attention from Trump’s dirty deeds.

Putin killed people he didn’t like. Trump looked away. The Saudi Crown Prince killed a reporter. Trump seemed confused about who did it. Kim Jong-Un imprisoned an American college student who died shortly after being returned to his parents. Trump claimed Kim didn’t know anything. Who is this person? A respectable country would have landed sanctions on the countries involved and marched their leaders into the world court.

Trump sees things through the distorted lens of always being rich and always being right. No one challenges him, but things are changing, and Donald J. Trump doesn’t have Fred and Mary Anne to tell him he’s a good boy. They raised a liar, cheat, racist and xenophobe.

Trump is simply a paper Mache president who will be brought down by the flames of the Senate, the House and his own justice department investigations. The ash that remains won’t be worth the pardon that the next fake president will give him. Pence is doomed to nothing, because his only power in Washington is kowtowing to Trump. Those Republicans who are now standing blindly with Trump will slowly be weeded out, and their futures back home will find them looking in from the outside. Trump needs a wall, but not on the southern border. He needs a wall built around himself and his family because the law is coming to get him. And in the end, AMERICA WILL WIN!

LIARS ALWAYS BELIEVE LIARS

Trump Fails to Defend Decency

We learned a lot about President Donald Trump this week, and none of it was good. In the history of American presidents, we may have challenged some of their political intents or lack of awareness on certain issues, but we always believed they upheld America’s best interests. It’s getting harder and harder to believe that Trump sees another liar for what he is. Putin lied; Trump took the bait. Kim Jong-Un lied; Trump came running into his arms.

The 45th President of the United States is what is known in foreign relations circles as a naïve “chicken shit.” In my book, Gold, God, Guns & Goofballs, I bared my feelings about the relationship between Kim and Trump, “We saw what happened to a kid from Cincinnati who was slowly murdered while incarcerated in North Korea. After he came home to die, the head Goofball genuflected at the groin of a despot for a freaking photo op. Have you no decency, Goofball-in-Chief?”

To quote another stable genius, Britney Spears, “Oops, I did it again.” Trump stood on the international stage in Vietnam, imaginary bone spurs and all, and once again said that he believed the word of a deranged tyrannical dictator about the death of someone. If you are keeping score, he believes that Putin wasn’t involved in the attack on our democracy during the 2016 election. He believes the Crown Prince and his royal family had nothing to do with the brutal murder of a Washington Post reporter, Jamal Khashoggi. Shamefully, he also believes the denials of Roy Moore and those who support him. Now, he says that Kim knew nothing about the treatment of Otto Warmbier. What a farce.

The people who would be most affected by Trump’s comments are very disturbed by the siding with Chairman Kim. And it only took 48 hours for the Warmbier family to respond, “We have been respectful during this summit process. Now we must speak out,” Fred and Cindy Warmbier said in a statement. “Kim and his evil regime are responsible for the death of our son Otto. Kim and his evil regime are responsible for unimaginable cruelty and inhumanity. No excuse or lavish praise can change that.”

What Trump has done, slowly but surely, is lower the moral value of America. He doesn’t defend decency; he steps over it. This brings us the Michael Cohen hearing that took place while Trump was in Vietnam. The House of Representatives Committee of Oversight called the convicted ex-lawyer and Trump fixer to testify the same way one might interrogate a spy to learn how to keep the wolfs away next time.

The Republicans on the committee were woefully unprepared to use the evidence that was provided to defend their president. The best confrontations were the product of young fresh faces and minds from the Majority. Michael Cohen has an agenda. The Democrats in Congress also have an agenda. Not all agendas are bad. An agenda is simply a list of items to be discussed at a formal meeting. While that word has been hijacked by zealous persons and hyper-partisans, it’s true meaning persists. Michael Cohen is a liar who the head liar, Donald Trump, employed for almost ten years, most likely because Cohen would lie for him.

There are some experts who think that Trump watching the Cohen testimony so bothered the “leader of the free world” that when North Korea proposed a reason to step forward, Trump childishly rejected the offer and walked. He was rendered stupid by what was happening in Washington.

The goal of the hearing was clear and totally in the purview of the committee. They were exercising their duty to conduct oversight regarding what has been happening in the administration. And what did we learn about Trump? Well, most of it is old news, but often obscured by the multitude of tweets, public statements and known legal documents. The hearing emphasized the reality that Trump is not a trustworthy person. Doh!

We all know he lies, he cheats, he deals and he double-deals. He’s underhanded and will commit crimes to protect his name and money. To put a bow on it, he’s the most unsavory and corrupt President since Richard Nixon. Just why do we let this man continue to be our president?

As more holes were torn in his reputation, it was fitting that he was in Vietnam, a place where 58,220 US soldiers were once killed in its jungles and cities. As Michael Cohen was quoting Trump’s mea culpa on faking a medical deferment to get out of serving his country, Kim Jong-Un was Donald Trump’s master puppeteer, once again.

Kim gets to take the long train ride home to accolades and proclamations in his homeland about the way the little murderer stood up to the blowhard leader of the United States. Trump will come home to face questions about the fantasies of a friendship that was supposed to help him get a Nobel Peace Prize. There will be other questions about what he knew, and when he knew it. Russian investigation is one thing, but the legal beagles in the Southern District of New York are searching a scent. It’s the stench of lies, crimes and felonies. It won’t be long now.

Silly man. Trump doesn’t even realize the whole world is doing more than watching; they are laughing at him. And because he is the President, they are laughing at America too, and that should make us all angry. It’s time for action!

ROGUE KILLERS

Transactional Trump Doctrine

Every human life is important. Every U.S. President has understood the principles of never putting a price on human life and not negotiating with terrorists or governments for the release of hostages. In the past, we haven’t paid ransoms to kidnappers.

Even though we have an on again, off again relationship with the death penalty here in America, we do keep a watchful eye on human rights violations around the world. That makes what happened in Turkey at the Saudi Arabian consulate even more outrageous. Sixty-year old journalist and legal U.S. resident, Jamal Khashoggi, entered the Saudi consulate to finalize his marriage documents and has not seen since. To be clear, a consulate or embassy is the responsibility of the country that owns it, NOT the responsibility of the country on whose soil it stands. The Saudi government is accountable for happenings at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.

In business, a profit and loss analysis is deployed in every decision. With Khashoggi, President Trump has been pushed into a corner. According to the Turkish government, the journalist was killed inside the consulate and then dismembered and taken out for disposal. The Turks claim they have audio and video proof. If this is true, America would have to redefine its relationship with Saudi Arabia. What will President Trump do?

When Trump was first asked about this situation, he flinched and said that this would not stop sales of arms to the Saudis because it would hurt jobs here in the U.S. Really? During a press conference he claimed, “We would be punishing ourselves by canceling arms sales to Saudi Arabia. The U.S. was competing against China and Russia for the $110 billion deal with the country”. So, I guess we are the country that will take the money and run. We are the country that says a journalist’s life is not worth $110 billion dollars. You see, it’s all about money. HUMAN RIGHTS is just something you talk about to seem moral.

As Trump started to waffle on this a bit, he introduced the cover story that was fed to him by that Saudi King that it might have been “rogue killers” who killed Khashoggi. Marco Rubio stood tall and said retaliation might include NOT selling arms to the Saudis. Both the Saudis and Trump should be worried. The Turks claim that have a tape.

How silly the Donald and Jared Kushner look now for making such a big deal about their relationship with the new ruthless Saudi Prince Mohammad bin Salman (MBS). This is the guy who, right after talking to Jared on the phone, rounded up all his relatives he disliked and put them under house arrest at the Ritz Carlton Hotel. Trump even tweeted that he had full confidence in the new Saudi Prince. The President of the United States in an enabler of dictators and thugs.

While Saudi Arabia wages a complex war in Yemen, smart diplomatic minds know this war has nothing to do with Yemen interests. It’s is a proxy battle between the Saudis and Iran. Russia backs Iran, the U.S. backs the Saudis. And just like a guy who goes down to his basement to play with his model trains, the Crown Prince works the war in his backyard. Yemen is a pastime for a bored Prince playing army and killing people.

The Saudis want our guns and bombs, so they can continue this war without world conflicts getting in the way of the one million barrels of oil they pump each day. Now, if they have killed the Washington Post reporter Jamal Khashoggi, they will reveal the intolerance they have employed for years as a Wahhabi Islamic state. They put people to death everyday for any breach of protocol or independence. Maybe they believed that Trump would do nothing. After all, in the Donald’s words, “Journalists are the enemy of the people.”

We know that Donald Trump is a misinformed, narcissistic, pathological liar. We also know that all he really wants is to be loved. It’s a flaw quickly overshadowed by a constant desire to fight back for even the slightest disparaging remark. He seems to think that defensiveness makes him a real man. He cannot stand to be wrong and he punches back at every challenge, even if he might be proven wrong. He typically forgets words he spoke just a few minutes ago, so he might not even know that he’s lying.

In this conundrum, money might trump human rights. Without an action by the Congress, Trump will do the deal with the Saudis and make America just another political whore in the world. What happens when someone like Putin kills critics and journalists? Oh, that’s right, he already has. What happens when a U.S. citizen and journalist is killed on foreign soil? What will the great Orange Leader do then? In some ways, Trump is very transparent. He will do nothing that hurts his base.

Our President is always looking for a scapegoat to accuse of some terrible thing. He can say black is white, blue is red, and right is wrong. While many Americans are embarrassed by this fake man in makeup, others believe Trump is a savior.

Sadly, the death of a journalist might just be racked up as the cost of doing business; a small price to pay to keep American workers producing more death and destruction around the world. The transactional Trump Doctrine is bad for America. He’s made a deal with the devil and murderers in the Middle East. What happened to America’s moral leadership in the world. Trump has killed it.

SPEED DATING IN SINGAPORE

Trump’s Simplistic View of Diplomacy

What the world just witnessed in Singapore was the devaluation of reality. The bull in the china shop destroyed so much stemware and pottery that the United States will have to take out another loan to pay for it all. If I was a conspiracy theorist, I might suggest that the big summit between Kim Jong-Un and Donald Trump didn’t really happen. But we saw it on TV, so it must have taken place. However, the final product of the event has less backbone than a jellyfish.

The Democrats asked, “Where’s the beef,” While the Trump loyalists were toasting, “Well, Trump did it!” Yes, he took a meeting with the Chairman of a totalitarian nation, who arrests, tortures, kills and enslaves his people, but that never stood in the way of the Donald’s ego. He thinks he will get the Noble Peace Prize for this made-for-TV event, but he failed to get anything of substance from this high-level meeting. It’s pure Trump; lots of talk, lots of words, little substance.

Trump walked away with a two-page letter saying we agree to reaffirm the talks to denuclearize the Korean peninsula. We still don’t know if Kim’s definition of denuclearization matches ours. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the U.S. goal of the meeting with the North Korean despot was to get “Permanent, verifiable, irreversible dismantling” of their nuclear war machine. Mike has now become frustrated with the fair questions concerning that very pronouncement.

When Pompeo, probably suffering from the new orange form of jetlag, was asked about the fact that his words were not in the two-page agreement both leaders signed, he cited the word “complete” and equated it to “permanent, verifiable, irreversible dismantling” of North Korea’s nuclear arsenal. When pressed further, Pompeo barked, “I find that question insulting and ridiculous and, frankly, ludicrous. I just have to be honest with you. It’s a game and one ought not play games with serious matters like this.” Mike, Mike, we appreciate your being “honest” with us but, please, when you negotiate a complex disarmament agreement with another country, you should use precise legal verbiage. Right?

Since Trump returned from his speed-dating session with a dictator in Singapore, he has declared that North Korea is no longer a nuclear threat. This, we guess, is based not on an agreement but on his perception of a five-hour meeting with Kim Jong-Un. Donald Trump destroyed relationships with members of the G-7 with insults and his lack of understanding about how trade works, and then dashed off to the big summit. He doesn’t have a solid grasp of diplomacy, so he wasted his time and millions of dollars on a giant photo-op.

Time will tell whether a pledge to start a dialog will indeed lead to peace, but there is good reason to cast skepticism over what happened in Singapore. By telling Kim that we would suspend all military activities with South Korea, we gave the autocrat a gigantic win, without getting diddley-squat in return. Trump also hinted that we might pull out all our troops from South Korea. Really? Why would we do that?

When confronted about some of the North Korean human rights violations, Trump replied with praise for Kim Jong-Un as a “tough guy,” a “smart guy” and a “great negotiator.” When Bret Baier of Fox News interviewed Trump following the denuclearization summit, our president declined to condemn North Korea’s record.

International bodies have accused Kim of crimes against humanity, including assassinations of political rivals, public executions and the imprisonment of tens of thousands political adversaries. Trump seems numb to real carnage.

The Donald disassociated Kim from those atrocities with, “Hey, when you take over a country, tough country, with tough people, and you take it over from your father, I don’t care who you are, what you are, how much of an advantage you have – if you can do that at 27 years old, that’s one in 10,000 could do that.” I guess their first date went well, judging from Trump’s additional comment, “So he’s a very smart guy, he’s a great negotiator and I think we understand each other.”

Trump believes that everyone is like him and that flattering the other person is all that’s needed. When Trump says something that doesn’t get a response, he assumes he has won. Judging by what we know so far, Trump received a few words on paper, while America appears to have given more than we got. We all hope this is real but, judging by the reaction of Mike Pompeo to a few honest questions about the agreement, maybe the Secretary of State realizes that this is not as it appears.

Trump knows how to pull out of deals, but there is no evidence that he is competent with making pacts, agreements or peace treaties. Without good people like Pompeo, Trump would just be another fat, pompous politician with promises to keep. It’s not bad that he delivers on all his promises, but those promises are terribly destructive. He has made America less great. I am embarrassed by him.
